Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  8. Air bags, frontal, passenger side, inflator moduleDo not drive until repairedMay 31, 2016

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Ford Ranger vehicles, 2006-2011 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles, and 2005-2011 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Ford is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Ford Ranger, Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2006-2008 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles and 2005-2008 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Any vehicle not included in "Zone A", or "Zone B" is not included in the safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. 9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

  11. Wheels, lugs/nuts/bolts/studsDec 7, 2011

FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 FORD FUSION AND MERCURY MILAN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 17 INCH STEEL WHEELS AND BUILT FROM APRIL 1, 2009, THROUGH APRIL 30, 2009, AND FROM DECEMBER 1, 2009, THROUGH NOVEMBER 13, 2010. THE WHEEL STUDS MAY FRACTURE, POTENTIALLY CAUSING A WHEEL TO SEPARATE.

WHILE DRIVING, MULTIPLE STUD FRACTURES COULD OCCUR AT THE WHEEL LOCATION, AND THE OPERATOR MAY EXPERIENCE VEHICLE VIBRATION AND/OR WHEEL SEPARATION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR BRAKE DISC SURFACE FOR FLATNESS AND REPLACE THE DISCS AS NECESSARY. ADDITIONALLY, THE WHEEL LUG NUTS WILL BE REPLACED ON ALL FOUR WHEELS. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 24, 2012. 1. Steering, Oct 12, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.

  2. Steering, Oct 12, 2016

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE, I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING FOLLOWED BY THE POWER STEERING/ADVANCE TRAC FAILURE LIGHT APPEARING ON THE DASH. I CAREFULLY PULLED OVER AND HAD MY CAR TOWED TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. FORD DETERMINED I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE PSCM R&R STEERING GEAR AT A COST OF $1919.63

  3. Steering, Oct 11, 2016

POWER STEERING SYSTEM FAULT MESSAGE CAME ON WHEN STARTING THE CAR. RESTARTED THE VEHICLE BUT MESSAGE REMAINED. DROVE HOME 45 MILES WITHOUT POWER STEERING. NEXT TIME I STARTED THE VEHICLE POWER STEERING WAS FINE. STOPPED AT FORD DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE IF MESSAGE WAS BEING DISPLAYED. MESSAGE AGAIN APPEARED APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS LATER BUT WENT OFF WHEN VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER FORD DEALER AND DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM (OCTOBER 5, 2016). THEIR DIAGNOSTIC INDICATED THAT THE POWER STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS APPEARS TO BE THE SAME PART THAT WAS RECALLED ON 2011-2013 FORD FUSIONS. THE PART HAS BEEN REPLACED AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $1,800.

  4. Steering, Oct 11, 2016

STEERING ASSIST FAULT. NO POWER STEERING. WAS ON AND OFF, NOW JUST NO POWER STEERING AT ALL.

  5. Steering, Oct 10, 2016

DRIVING HOME FROM WORK MY STEERING ASST FAULT LIGHT CAME ON AT THE STOP LIGHT AND THE CAR BECAME DIFFICULT TO DRIVE FOUGHT THE CAR HOME. DAYS LATER GOT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO TELL ME THE POWER STEERING GEAR NEED TO REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF 1800. TO NO FAULT OF MY OWN. THE RECALL ONLY INCLUDED 2011-2013 WHEN MY CAR IS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING NOTED IN THE OTHER RECALLS

  6. Steering, Oct 10, 2016

MY DAUGHTER'S 2010 FORD FUSION POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING IT. SHE DIDN'T CRASH THE CAR BUT IT MADE IT HARD TO TURN. HE LOW TIRE INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE POWER STEERING JUST WENT OUT. WE GOT THE TIRE PRESSURE BACK BUT NOW THE POWER STEERING WON'T WORK. WE HAD ONE MECHANIC LOOK AT THE CAR BUT HE SAYS IT'S THE STEERING RACK AND THOSE CARS ARE KNOWN FOR THIS ISSUE. I'VE RESEARCHED THIS AND SEE THERE HAS BEEN LOTS OF COMPLAINTS WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND THINK FORD NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT BAD OR KILLED. I ALSO OWN A 2012 FORD FUSION AND THE FUEL PUMP WENT OUT IN IT AND I HAVE SEEN THAT THIS IS A ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR. THE COST OF THAT REPAIR WAS $555 AND THE STEERING RACK CAN RANGE FROM $1200 TO $1600 AND IF FORD DOESN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT EITHER ISSUE THEN I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER FORD VEHICLE AGAIN.

  7. Steering, Oct 8, 2016

POWER STEERING FAILED AND POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT DISPLAYED ON DASH. RESTARTED CAR AND POWER STEERING WORKED OK. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER ON 07/28/09 TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT AND THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM ON LATER MODELS BUT NOT ON THE 2010. THE SAME THING HAPPENED YESTERDAY 10.07/16. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AT HIGH SPEED AND CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT.

  8. Steering, Oct 6, 2016

ON MAY14TH THE CHECK STEERING WARNING MESSAGE CAME ON. THE FOLLOWING DAY THE POWER ASSIST ON THE STEERING WAS NOT WORKING. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR SLOWLY TO THE DEALER. THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE STEERING GEAR. THERE WAS 112, 000 MILES ON THE CAR WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED.

  9. Steering, Oct 5, 2016

WHEN BACK UP FROM PARKING SPOT AND GARAGE, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED. "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" MESSAGE SHOWED ON THE DASH. HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE WEEK, SENT THE CAR TO DEALER TO CHECK. BUT, THE DEALER COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE DEALER'S ACTION WAS RESET THE SOFTWARE CODE. IT HAPPENED AGAIN DURING THE WEEKEND. THE CAR WAS SENT BACK TO THE DEALER. THE WHOLE STEERING GEAR WAS REPLACED AND COST $1670.

  10. Steering, Oct 5, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH DOWN AN INCLINE, THE SERVICE POWER STEERING MESSAGE ILLUMINATED. THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILED AND CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL TO LOCK IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION. AS A RESULT, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. AFTER TURNING OFF AND RESTARTING THE ENGINE, THE STEERING WHEEL COULD BE TURNED IN EITHER DIRECTION, BUT THE POWER ASSIST WOULD NOT OPERATE AND MADE THE STEERING WHEEL VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000.

  11. Steering, Oct 5, 2016

WE BOUGHT THIS CAR 6-7 MONTHS AGO FOR OUR DAUGHTER IN COLLEGE. ABOUT ONE MONTH AGO, AS SHE WAS LEAVING HOME, HER CAR WOULD NOT STEER AND SHE RECEIVED A WARNING LIGHT THAT SAID " POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT". SHE PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED IT OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN AND THE WARNING WAS GONE AND THE CAR OPERATED PROPERLY. THIS PAST SATURDAY WHILE OUT OF TOWN, SHE AGAIN STARTED THE CAR AND RECEIVED THE " POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" WARNING ONLY THIS TIME, NO MATTER WHAT SHE TRIED IT WOULD NOT CLEAR. SHE EVEN CALLED A MECHANIC WHO TRIED DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY, BUT NOTHING WORKED. SHE DROVE THE CAR HOME 2 HOURS AWAY WITH NO POWER STEERING! WE HAVE FOUND OUT AFTER PURCHASING THIS CAR THAT IT IS A PROBLEM FOR MANY 2010-2012 FUSION OWNERS. THE 2011-2012 WERE RECALLED, BUT NOT THE 2010 FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I WILL BE PAYING OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER 1368.00 FRIDAY FOR THIS REPAIR. MONEY I SURELY DON'T HAVE LYING AROUND. WE RESEARCHED THIS CAR BEFORE WE BOUGHT IT AND FOUND ONLY POSITIVE REVIEWS...UNTIL THIS HAPPENED AND WE RESEARCHED THIS "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" CODE AND THEN OUR COMPUTER BLEW UP WITH ONE COMPLAINT AFTER ANOTHER. CLEARLY THE 2010 NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO THIS RECALL.

  12. Steering, Oct 5, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE POWER STEERING FAILED, THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED, AND A POWER STEERING ASSIST MESSAGE DISPLAYED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A COMPONENT RELATED TO THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000.

  13. Steering, Oct 5, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. WHILE TURNING THE VEHICLE, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. THE POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,000.

  14. Steering, Oct 5, 2016

POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING GOT MESSAGE THAT SAID POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT ,IM 225 AND COULD NOT TURN WHEEL AT ALL. SHUT OFF CAR LET SIT FOR A SHORT TIME STARTED BACK UP EVERY THING WORKED AS IT SHOULD, IVE HAD THIS HAPPEN 3 TIMES HOPE IT DONT HAPPEN WHEN GOING AT HIGH SPEED

  15. Steering, Oct 5, 2016

POWER STEERING FAILED. I HAD TO HAVE THE UNIT REPLACED. VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN AND PARKED. IT SET FOR ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE IT WAS DRIVEN. THE POWER STEERING WAS NOT WORKING WHEN I DROVE IT THE NEXT TIME.

  16. Steering, Oct 4, 2016

WAS DRIVING AND POWER STEERING JUST QUIT AND IT WAS VERY SCARY AS I WAS JUST TURNING INTO A PARKING LOT AND IT JUST STOPPED WORKING ALL TOGETHER. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO KEEP FROM HAVING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR KILL SOMEONE. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND COULD GET PEOPLE KILLED AND REALLY NEEDS TO BE FIXED AND ELIMINATED IN ALL CARS. I DID SEE WHERE FORD HAD A RECALL ON SOME OF THE FUSIONS BUT NOT MINE BECAUSE IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN A DIFFERENT MONTH. IMAGINE THAT! HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND PAY NEARLY $2000 TO GET IT FIXED. I AM SURE GLAD THAT IT WAS ME DRIVING IT WHEN THIS OCCURRED INSTEAD OF ONE OF MY CHILDREN THAT COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR INJURED.

  17. Steering, Oct 4, 2016

THE POWER STEERING HAD A SMALL ODD SIDE TO SIDE WOBBLE IN IT THAT FELT SIMILAR TO AN OUT OF BALANCE TIRE. THEN WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET THE POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING WHILE I WAS DRIVING. THE STEERING BECAME INCREDIBLY HEAVY AND DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. THE ADVANCE TRACK WARNING FLASHED ON THE CONSOLE. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING RACK HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALERSHIP RESET THE FAULT AND THE POWER STEERING RETURNED, BUT THE WOBBLE WAS WORSE AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH NO WARNING. THE FOLLOWING MODEL YEAR HAS THE SAME PART AND IS PART OF A RECALL FOR THE DESCRIBED PROBLEM.

  18. Steering, Oct 4, 2016

THE POWER STEERING FAILED, FORTUNATELY WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL IN THE DRIVEWAY. THE VEHICLE IS USED FOR DAILY COMMUTING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, SO IT WAS VERY LUCKY THAT IT FAILED WHEN THE POTENTIAL DAMAGE WAS MINIMIZED. I HAD TO REPLACE THE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY AT A COST OF $1872.69, INVOICE ENCLOSED.

  19. Steering, Oct 3, 2016

DRIVING CAR THEN LOST POWER STEERING, ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT LIGHT COMES ON, ALSO ADVANCETRAC SERVICE LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT. THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION. CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 70K MILES. TOOK CAR TO THE MECHANIC HE SAID IT NEEDS A NEW RACK. THIS IS A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR AND REALLY NOT ACCEPTABLE IN A CAR THIS AGE AND CONDITION. MY MECHANIC CANNOT DETERMINE THE ABS PROBLEM TILL THE RACK IS REPLACED. IT SEEMS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW THAT THESE COMPONENTS ARE ALL CONTROLLED ELECTRICALLY. SEEMS THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 2011 AND 2012 MODELS. 2010 NEEDS A RECALL ALSO. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION THAT HAPPENS WITH NO WARNING. ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO HAD TO HAVE THE MOTOR MOUNTS REPLACED(CONTROLLED BY HYDRAULICS). PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG NOT FUNCTIONING, THE LIST GOES ON. DON'T HAVE AN INVOICE YET AS CAR IS TILL IN THE SHOP. I WILL BE REACHING OUT TO FORD, BUT I DON'T EXPECT A RESOLUTION.

  20. Steering, Oct 3, 2016

STEERING SYSTEM SUDDENLY FAILED WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE. SYSTEM FLASHED A WARNING AND "DING" SOUND AND I LOST ALMOST ALL STEERING. IT TOOK A LOT OF STRENGTH TO EXIT AND PULL INTO A PARKING LOT. THIS COULD HAVE ENDED MUCH WORSE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AND I HAD POWER STEERING AGAIN. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST MONTH.
