Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Ford Ranger vehicles, 2006-2011 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles, and 2005-2011 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Ford is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Ford Ranger, Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2006-2008 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles and 2005-2008 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Any vehicle not included in "Zone A", or "Zone B" is not included in the safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. 9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

  11. Wheels, lugs/nuts/bolts/studsDec 7, 2011

FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 FORD FUSION AND MERCURY MILAN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 17 INCH STEEL WHEELS AND BUILT FROM APRIL 1, 2009, THROUGH APRIL 30, 2009, AND FROM DECEMBER 1, 2009, THROUGH NOVEMBER 13, 2010. THE WHEEL STUDS MAY FRACTURE, POTENTIALLY CAUSING A WHEEL TO SEPARATE.

WHILE DRIVING, MULTIPLE STUD FRACTURES COULD OCCUR AT THE WHEEL LOCATION, AND THE OPERATOR MAY EXPERIENCE VEHICLE VIBRATION AND/OR WHEEL SEPARATION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR BRAKE DISC SURFACE FOR FLATNESS AND REPLACE THE DISCS AS NECESSARY. ADDITIONALLY, THE WHEEL LUG NUTS WILL BE REPLACED ON ALL FOUR WHEELS. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 24, 2012. AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, A WARNING SIGN POPPED UP ON MY DASH REQUESTING THAT I SERVICE POWER STEERING IMMEDIATELY. IT WAS THEN THAT MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND I WAS UNABLE TO TURN, ALMOST HITTING CARS IN THE ROWS BEHIND ME. THANK GOD THAT I HAVE BACKUP SENSORS BECAUSE IT COULD HAVE BEEN NASTY! ANYWAYS, IT WAS DIFFICULT FOR ME TO STEER THROUGHOUT THE PARKING LOT AND FOR ME TO GET TO WHERE I NEEDED TO GO....UPDATED 12/10/15 *BF

POWER STEERING IS DEFAULTED WHILE DRIVING. IT BECAME SO HARD TO TURN. THANKS GOD THERE IS NO CRASH. IT HAPPENED 3 DAYS AGO IN WINSTON SALEM NC AND I NOW PARKED THE VEHICLE IN MY DRIVEWAY THINKING ABOUT WHERE TO FIND MONEY TO FIX IT

  3. Steering, Oct 6, 2015

POWER STEERING ASSIST IS NOT WORKING

  4. Steering, Sep 30, 2015

POWER STEERING ASSIST AND CHECK ADVANCE TRAC CAME ON! HAD TO DRIVE HOME WITH NO POWER STEERING. IT APPEARS THERE ARE SEVERAL FUSIONS THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. IT COST $1300.00 TO FIX. FORD SHOULD REIMBURSE FOR PARTS OR AND AT LEAST HAVE A RECALL ON THESE CARS. I WAS PARKED WHEN IT HAPPENED! THE POWER ASSIST HAS CAME ON BEFORE BUT THEY COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM UNTIL IT ACTUALLY QUIT WORKING. I HELPED MY GRANDDAUGHTER OUT SO SHE HAD A WAY TO GET TO SCHOOL! WHO COULD I CONTACT TO SEE IF FORD WILL HELP WITH THE COST?

  5. Steering, Sep 29, 2015

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED. IN ADDITION, THE ADVANCED TRACK AND POWER STEERING ASSIST WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

  6. Steering, Sep 28, 2015

MY 8 MONTH PREGNANT WIFE WAS DRIVING THE FUSION AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED ON HER. THE VEHICLE WAS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL AND FELT VERY UNSAFE. THE DASH REPORTED, "SERVICE POWER STEERING NOW." THIS IS THE THIRD CATASTROPHIC FAILURE WITH MY 2010 FORD FUSION, YOU CAN READ MORE ABOUT THE PROBLEMS HERE: HTTP://FORDPOWERSTEERING.COM/

  7. Steering, Electronic stability control (ESC), Sep 26, 2015

WHILE DRIVING A MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, "HAVE POWER STEERING SERVICED", WITHIN A FEW SECONDS "HAVE ADVANCE TRAC SYSTEM SERVICED" WARNING APPEARED. I SHUT OFF THE CAR. UPON RESTARTING THE CAR THERE WAS A TOTAL FAILURE OF THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE THE CAR DUE TO THE DIFFICULTY OF TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. I DETECTED A SLIGHT BURNING SMELL. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER. REPAIR INVOICE STATES AN INTERNAL FAULT OF ELECTRIC POWER STEERING. RACK AND PINION SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED. MILEAGE AT THE TIME WAS 60,402. IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY OR ON A BUSY ROAD THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT.

  8. Steering, Sep 24, 2015

WHILE ON A ROAD TRIP I RECEIVED A MESSAGE THAT READ "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" AS SOON AS I STARTED THE CAR AND AT THE EXACT SAME TIME I LOST THE POWER STEERING. TURN OUT THAT CORRODED WIRES FRIED THE RACK & PINION. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED OVER A 100 MILES TO GET IT HOME. FORD TRIED TO TELL ME THAT THE WIRES WERE DAMAGED BY RODENTS. THEY CONVENIENTLY LEFT OUT THE IMPORTANT FACT THAT MY CAR (BUILT 04/07/2010) WAS NOT BUILT WITH AN EPAS GEAR HEAT SHIELD ON THE RACK & PINION. THE HEAT SHIELD WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THE WIRES FROM INCINERATING & FRYING THE RACK & PINION. FORD KNEW THAT THE LACK OF THE HEAT SHIELD WAS A PROBLEM AND TOOK STEPS TO CORRECT THIS ON THE FUTURE CARS. FUSIONS BUILT AFTER 04/12/2010 HAD THE HEAT SHIELD ADDED TO THE RACK & PINION. BUT THEY HAVE MADE NO ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THE ERROR ON THE CARS BUILT BEFORE 04/12/2010 THAT WERE BUILT WITHOUT THE HEAT SHIELD. I AM BLESSED THAT I WAS NOT ON THE ROAD AT THE TIME THAT I LOST MY POWER STEERING SINCE I WAS JUST STARTING BACK HOME ON COUNTRY ROADS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. IN THE PAST 5YRS I HAVE NOW HAD 3 POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CAR MALFUNCTIONS. 1. AUG. 2013 - ENGINE SHAKING. NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. NEEDED NEW ENGINE & TRANS. MOUNTS. 2. OCT. 2013 - THROTTLE BODY FAILURE WHILE IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. 3. AUG. 2015 - POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT.

  9. Steering, Sep 24, 2015

COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST FAULT. LUCKILY MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER WERE PARKED WHEN THIS FAULT POPPED UP OTHERWISE SOMETHING BAD COULD HAVE HAPPENED. 2011 THROUGH 2012 FUSIONS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. IT IS COMPLETELY UNFAIR FOR ME TO HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE.

  10. Steering, Service brakes, Sep 24, 2015

THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH MY POWER STEERING. IT FAILED ON ME WHEN PARALLEL PARKING. AN ERROR REFERRING TO ADVANCETRAC APPEARED ON THE DASH. I HAD TO TURN MY CAR OFF IN ORDER TO RESET IT, BUT I FEAR IT MAY HAPPEN WHEN DRIVING ON A FREEWAY.

THE DEALERSHIP AND FORD WAS UNWILLING TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT PART AND LABOR. I HAD TO PAY A TOTAL OF $1833.57 FOR THE STEERING, LABOR, AND FOR THE ALIGNMENT. I AM HOPING THAT I WILL BE REIMBURSED FROM THE DEALER FOR THE THE PARTS.

POWER STEERING LOCKED UP, COULD NOT TURN THE WHEEL IN ANY DIRECTION. THIS HAPPENED IN A VERY RURAL AREA WHERE THERE WAS NO PHONE SERVICE TO EVEN CALL FOR HELP. I COULD HAVE DIED. THIS IS NOT SAFE.

I AM RECEIVING NUMEROUS "POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE FAILURE" WARNINGS. IT HAPPENS UPON STARTING MY CAR AND IT'S NOW BECOMING MORE FREQUENT. THE RESULT IS A TOTAL LOSS OF POWER STEERING. I KNOW FORD HAS RECALLED THIS ITEM BUT MY YEAR (2010) WAS EXCLUDED. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH SAFETY ISSUE TO WARRANT AN ADDENDUM TO THE RECALL TO INCLUDE THE YEAR 2010.

AS OF LAST THURSDAY, THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM HAD BEEN FUNCTIONING INTERMITTENTLY. AS OF YESTERDAY IT NO LONGER FUNCTIONS AT ALL. AT FIRST, THE INFORMATION DISPLAY WOULD SHOW "POWER STEERING SYSTEM FAULT" AND THE POWER ASSIST WOULD BE GONE. SO I WOULD RESTART THE CAR AND ALL WOULD BE FINE. WELL YESTERDAY IT REQUIRED 4 RESTARTS BEFORE THE POWER ASSIST WOULD WORK. THEN ON MY LAST TIME USING THE CAR YESTERDAY IT WENT OUT COMPLETELY, NO MATTER HOW MANY RESTARTS THE SYSTEM SHOWS THAT MESSAGE AND HAS NO POWER ASSIST. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS VERY ISSUE FOR 2011-2012 BUT THE 2010S DEFINITELY NEED TO BE INCLUDED AS WELL. IT'S THE SAME CAR AND 2010 OWNERS ARE LEFT TO PAY FOR THE COSTLY REPAIR OURSELVES WHILE THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A KNOWN ISSUE THAT IS BEING RECTIFIED FOR 2011 AND UP OWNERS. IT'S NOT FAIR, FORD NEEDS TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT NOT BURY THEIR HEADS IN THE SAND ON THIS 1 YEAR MODEL.
