Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. 4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY LOST POWER WITHOUT WARNING. I QUICKLY WENT FROM 70 MPH TO 50 MPH AND CONTINUED TO SLOW. THE VEHICLE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND MY RPMS DROPPED BELOW 500. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, WAITED A FEW MINUTES, AND STARTED IT. THE CAR STARTED AND IDLED JUST FINE. I REVVED THE ENGINE A FEW TIMES. RPMS STAYED IN THE NORMAL RANGE. I PUT THE CAR IN GEAR AND STARTED TO MOVE. IMMEDIATELY THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND THE RPMS DROPPED AGAIN. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THE THROTTLE BODY HAD FAILED AND IT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. THE TOW AND REPAIRS COST ME OVER $500. *TR

I WAS DRIVING 70 MPH ON A 4 LANE INTERSTATE, AS FAR AWAY FROM THE SHOULDER AS I COULD GET...SUDDENLY THE CAR LOST ALL ACCELERATION. I HAD TO MAKE MY WAY OVER THE 4 LANES TO PULL OVER. PUT THE CAR IN PARK, RESTARTED AND DROVE FOR ANOTHER 45 MINUTES AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN. SINCE THIS FIRST TIME, IT HAS NOW OCCURRED WITH NO WARNING, NO PATTERN AT LEAST 10 TIMES - ONE TIME I WAS GOING ACROSS MULTIPLE LANES OF ON-COMING TRAFFIC AND CARS GOING 50+ MPH HAD TO STOP TO AVOID T-BONING ME. TOOK MY CAR INTO MECHANIC, THEY SAY ITS THE THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL AND THAT IT WILL BE MORE THAN A MONTH WAIT FOR REPAIR BECAUSE FORD CAN'T KEEP UP WITH THE DEMAND FOR THIS FAULTY PART. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT THAT FORD IS WELL AWARE OF. IN RESEARCHING MY CARS ISSUE ONLINE I AM STUNNED TO SEE SO MANY OTHERS EXPERIENCING THIS SAME ISSUE. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET SOMEONE TO REALIZE THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE THAT NEEDS ATTENTION??? DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE? REALLY? I JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE APPROX 6 MO'S AGO WITH JUST UNDER 60,000 MILES. RIDICULOUS THAT IT'S NOW NEEDING THIS REPAIR. I CAN'T DRIVE THIS CAR FOR OVER A MONTH NOW, DUE TO FORD'S INABILITY TO KEEP UP. I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN THAT CAN'T RIDE IN THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE EXTREME HAZARD OF THIS VEHICLE STOPPING AT ANY TIME/SPEED. SO UNBELIEVABLY DANGEROUS AND UNACCEPTABLE. *TR

I OWN A FORD FUSION 2010. THE CAR RAN GREAT UNTIL IT JUST UNEXPECTEDLY STOP WORKING WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON I-95 WITH MY SON [XXX]. I WAS DRIVING AT 60 MPH WHEN THE CAR JUST STOP ACCELERATING WHEN I HIT THE GAS. I INSTINCTIVELY HIT MY FLASHERS ON AND STARTED HONKING MY HORN TO ALERT OTHER CARS BECAUSE THERE WAS NO IMMEDIATE SHOULDER TO PULL ONTO. AFTER ABOUT 100 YARDS OF DRIVING AT ABOUT 5 MPH I FINALLY PULLED OVER ONTO THE SHOULDER. THE CAR STARTED SHAKING UNCONTROLLABLY WHEN I STOPPED. I TURNED THE CAR OFF IN ORDER TO STOP THE SHAKING. THE EXPERIENCE WAS TERRIFYING ENOUGH THAT I WENT HOME TO DO RESEARCH. THE INFORMATION I FOUND FLOORED ME. THERE ARE LITERALLY HUNDREDS ON FORD FUSION 2010 OWNERS THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THE CAR JUST ABRUPTLY SHUTS DOWN BECAUSE OF A DEFECTIVE PART. THE PART IS THE THROTTLE BODY. IT IS MIND BOGGLING THAT FORD HAS NOT RECALLED THIS CAR. THEY ARE PUTTING MONEY AHEAD OF THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. I AM APPALLED THAT NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. I DEMAND THAT FORD MAKES THIS RIGHT BEFORE SOMEBODY GETS SERIOUSLY HURT. EARLIER THIS MONTH, I STARTED MY CAR [FORD FUSION 2010 SE] AFTER HAVING IT PARKED [NEVER HAVING THIS SITUATION BEFORE] MY CAR STARTED VIBRATING AFTER I TURNED THE CAR ON AND BARELY DRIVING IT. I PLACED THE CAR IN PARK AND POPPED MY HOOD AND LOOKED AT THE ENGINE, THE ENTIRE THING WAS VIBRATING SO I TURNED THE CAR OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTED, THE PROBLEM WAS THEN GONE AND I THOUGHT HMM.. MAYBE ITS JUST A MINOR ISSUE. THIS SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW DAYS AFTER AND THEN A FEW TIMES WITHIN THE SAME WEEK UP UNTIL NOW. SO I'LL BE DRIVING AND THE CAR WOULD JUST SLOW DOWN AND MY ENGINE WOULD BE VIBRATING. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE SHOP [BARELY MAKING IT THERE] I WENT TO "BROAD & JAMES AUTO CARE LOCATED AT 3288 E BROAD ST COLUMBUS, OH 43213" AFTER HAVING A DIAGNOSTICS DONE I WAS ADVISED THAT I HAD A THROTTLE BODY FAILURE AND THEY CONTACTED FORD KRIEGER IN COLUMBUS OH AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE PARTS ARE ON BACK ORDER AND THAT THERE ARE NO SPECIFIC DATE OF RECEIPT. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS WHEN I WAS BEGINNING TO ACCELERATE AT AROUND 50 MPH. THE ENGINE LOST POWER AND MY ENGINE AND WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. CAR BEGAN TO SHAKE AND THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE ENGINE JUST HIGH RPM'S AND NO MOVEMENT. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON BUT THE WRENCH LIGHT WAS OFF. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE BUT ABOUT 20 MILES DOWN THE ROAD IT DID IT AGAIN. AT THE TIME I THOUGHT I HAD GOT A BAD BATCH OF GAS. I HAD FILLED UP THAT MORNING. THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT OUT AND I DROVE FOR ANOTHER 10,000 MILES BEFORE IT HAPPENED AGAIN IN DOWNTOWN TRAFFIC. NOW THE CAR WILL ONLY GO ABOUT 2-3 MILES BEFORE THE IT GOES INTO THE LIMITING MODE. I TALKED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME IT IS THE THROTTLE BODY. THEY ARE ON AT LEAST A WEEK BACK-ORDER BECAUSE THEY CAN'T KEEP UP WITH THE DEMAND OF THE FAULTY PART. *TR

APPROXIMATELY 3 WEEKS AGO I NOTICED A SMALL BUCKING TYPE SYMPTOM WHILE SITTING AT AN IDLE AT STOPS LIGHTS. TODAY WHILE PULLING OUT FROM MY STREET ONTO THE MAIN ROAD MY CAR BEGAN BUCKING VERY BAD AND STALLED. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT RESTARTED AND CONTINUED ON TO WORK. IT HAPPENED TWICE MORE AT STOP LIGHTS WHILE TRYING TO CROSS A MAJOR HIGHWAY! I CALLED MY MECHANIC AND TOOK IT IN IMMEDIATELY. THEY JUST CALLED TO TELL ME IT WAS THE FUEL BODY AND THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THESE CARS AND THE PARTS ARE ON BACK ORDER! CONSIDERING THE SEVERITY OF THIS ISSUE AND THE FACT THAT SOMEONE COULD BE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE I WOULD DEMAND THAT FORD ISSUES A RECALL FOR THESE PARTS IMMEDIATELY! *TR

I HAD JUST LEFT THE DEALERSHIP AFTER GETTING AN OIL CHANGE. AFTER DRIVING LESS THAN 1 MILE THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AND MY CAR DECELERATED. I IMMEDIATELY WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY RAN A TEST AND SAID THAT IT PASSED, BUT IT MY BE THE THROTTLE BODY. THEY TOLD ME TO TRY AGAIN AND IF I HAVE PROBLEMS TO CALL. I LEFT AGAIN AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I CALLED THE SERVICE ASSOCIATE AND THEY HAD ME BRING IT BACK. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED. *TR

LOST POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEED. PULLED ONTO SHOULDER AND RESTARTED ENGINE. LATER CHECKED THE CODE, WHICH WAS P2111. STOPPED DRIVING CAR: IN SOME SITUATIONS THIS LOSS OF POWER COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. DEALER REPLACED THROTTLE BODY AT A COST OF $400. *TR

THREE TIMES, THE CAR HESITATED AND NEARLY STALLED, THEN WOULD NOT ACCELERATE NORMALLY. IT WAS STOPPED AND RESTARTED AND WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN HOME BUT TRAFFIC WAS DISRUPTED ON A MAJOR THOROUGHFARE AND VERY SCARY. WHEN WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID IT WAS A THROTTLE BODY PROBLEM AND WAS UNSAFE TO BE DRIVEN HOME. UNFORTUNATELY PARTS ARE BACK ORDERED AND WE ARE WITHOUT A VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY SAID IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AS IS. *TR

  20. Vehicle speed control, Fuel/propulsion system, Jul 15, 2013

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 70MPH, THE CAR EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS IN POWER FOLLOWED BY FLUXUATING RPM AND NO THROTTLE CONTROL. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY THROTTLE BODY. *TR

PUSHED ACCELERATOR WITH NO RESPONSE ABOVE IDLE. *TR

  22. Fuel system, Gasoline, Vehicle speed control, Jul 13, 2013

WHILE DRIVING MY CAR LOST ALL ACCELERATION. THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD TO QUICKLY PULL OVER TO AVOID TRAFFIC COMING UP FROM BEHIND ME. I SAT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WAITED A COUPLE OF MINUTES BEFORE TURNING IT BACK ON. THIS RESET THE GAUGES AND I COULD BEGIN DRIVING HOME (LESS THAN A MILE AWAY). ON THE WAY HOME IT HAPPENED AGAIN. CALLED MY FORD DEALERSHIP, VETERANS FORD IN TAMPA, FL. I SPOKE WITH A SERVICE ADVISOR NAMED [XXX], WHO THROUGH MY DESCRIPTION OF THE SYMPTOMS SAID THAT IT IS THE THROTTLE BODY. THEY HAD JUST FIXED THREE FUSIONS THAT VERY DAY WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. HE SAID IT IS A KNOW ISSUE WITH THE 2010 FUSION MODEL AND THEY FIX MANY OF THESE. SEEMS TO ME THAT FORD SHOULD REALIZE THEIR IS A WIDE SPREAD ISSUE WITH THIS PART AND IT IS UNSAFE. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALLED PART IN MY OPINION AS IT IS NOW GOING TO COST ME BETWEEN 400-700 DOLLARS TO REPAIR. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

CAR ENGINE UNEXPECTEDLY JERKED AND RPMS LOCKED AT 1000 NO MATTER WHAT WAS DONE WITH GAS PEDAL. DID NOT RECOVER UNTIL TURNED OFF AND THEN ON. REPEATED OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. ALSO ENGINE WOULD STALL WHEN TRYING TO IDLE. RESOLUTION WAS REPLACEMENT OF FAULTY THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY. *TR

  24. Fuel system, Gasoline, Vehicle speed control, Engine, Jul 12, 2013

DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC THE CAR LOST POWER GOING UP A HILL, AS IF THE GAS PEDAL HAD BEEN DISCONNECTED. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO AVOID BEING HIT AND PULLED OUT OF THE WAY. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE CAR DID START AGAIN BUT THE SHIFTING IS STRANGE AND IT DIES A LOT. I CALLED FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED IT WAS PROBABLY THE THROTTLE BODY AS THEY HAD BEEN REPLACING THEM LEFT AND RIGHT. THIS WOULD NOT BE COVERED BY ANY WARRANTY AND WOULD COST AROUND $500. I THEN HAD A PRIVATE MECHANIC LOOK AT IT. HE DROVE IT AROUND AND THE CAR DIED ON HIM 3 TIMES IN THIS ONE TRIP. SO AFTER CHECKING...HE CONFIRMED IT IS THE THROTTLE BODY BUT THE PART IS ON A NATIONAL BACK ORDER AND WOULD TAKE UP TO 6 WEEKS. THE MANAGER OF THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP IS VERY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE FUSIONS AND ADVISED ME TO CONTACT FORD CORPORATE. I DID AND THEIR RESPONSE TO THE PROBLEM WAS "WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED YOU.WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOUR VEHICLE BE INSPECTED BY YOUR SERVICING FORD DEALERSHIP TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF ANY SYMPTOMS YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE EXPERIENCING. THEY HAVE FACTORY TRAINED TECHNICIANS, COMPREHENSIVE SERVICE INFORMATION AND SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT TO HELP DIAGNOSE YOUR VEHICLE." RIGHT, MORE MONEY FOR THEM. SOMEONE NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT IN AN ACCIDENT. FORD NEEDS TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. IT'S OBVIOUS BY THE NATIONAL BACK ORDER THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM SOMEWHERE. *TR

  25. Fuel system, Gasoline, Vehicle speed control, Jul 12, 2013

LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY. ENGINE WOULD ONLY IDLE, VERY ROUGH. WRENCH SYMBOL LIT. SHUT CAR OFF, OPENED/CLOSED DOOR AND CAR WAS OK UNTIL NEXT INCIDENT. FAILURE OCCURRED SEVERAL MORE TIMES WHILE DRIVING HOME ON FREEWAY AND AT SLOWER SPEED. DIAGNOSTIC AT THE DEALER WAS A THROTTLE BODY FAILURE. *TR
