Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

In the event of a crash requiring deployment of the passenger air bag, the bracket that secures the air bag inflator to the module housing may deform, allowing the gas that inflates the air bag to leak out.

If the air bag does not inflate as intended, there is an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag module, free of charge. The recall began November 21, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S34.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Ford Ranger vehicles, 2006-2011 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles, and 2005-2011 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Ford is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Ford Ranger, Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2006-2008 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles and 2005-2008 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Any vehicle not included in "Zone A", or "Zone B" is not included in the safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. Ford mailed interim letters informing owners that parts are not yet available on July 15, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. 9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

FORD MOTOR COMPANY NOTIFIED ME ON JULY 1,2016 OF A RECALL INVOLVING TAKATA PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAGS. I HAVE CALLED MY DEALERSHIP EVERY MONTH SINCE THEN AND ALSO CALLED FORD MOTOR CO. CUSTOMER SERVICE. EVERY TIME I CALL ; ALL OF THE ANSWERS ARE THE SAME. PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. I HAVE ALSO BEEN ADVISED TO PARK MY CAR AND NOT TO USE IT UNTIL SUCH PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. WE ARE IN OUR MID 70'S AND CAN NOT AFFORD TO REPLACE OUR 2010 FORD FUSION. NOR CAN WE AFFORD TO PARK IT AND LEASE ANOTHER CAR.

POWER STEERING ASSIST WILL QUIT AT ANY TIME. IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE ON ROADWAYS WITH 60+ MPH. IT HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 4 TIMES OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS. FORD IS RECALLING THE 2011 -2013 MODELS AND OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS BUT WILL NOT INSURE OUR SAFETY IN A CAR THAT HAS ONLY 113,000 MILES. THE PROBLEM PRESENTS ITSELF UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS I.E. STARTUP IN THE GARAGE, LOW SPEED TOWN DRIVING, AND INTERSTATE SPEEDS. THIS LAST OCCURANCE HAS ALSO CAUSED A FAULT IN THE ELECTRONIC SWAY CONTROL.

"TAKATA RECALL" I WAS NOTIFIED IN JUNE 2016 OF THE RECALL AND HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING ELSE ON THE MATTER. I LIVE IN TEXAS AND SHOULDN'T I BE ON THE HIGHER PRIORITY LIST? IT SHOULDN'T TAKE THIS LONG FOR THE REPAIR ESPECIALLY SINCE IT IS PUTTING THE PUBLIC'S SAFETY AT RISK!!! IF THEY ARE STILL MANUFACTURING THESE PARTS THEN WHY IS IT TAKING SO LONG? THESE REPAIRS SHOULD BE PRIORITY #1 AND IT DOESN'T SEEM LIKE THEY ARE.

  14. Air bags, Oct 16, 2017

TAKATA INFLATORS. WE WERE MAILED AN "IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL" LETTER ON JUNE 15, 2016 AND RECEIVED ANOTHER ONE IN JULY 2016. THIS IS OCTOBER 2017 AND OUR AIR BAG RECALL SITUATION HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN CARE OF! WHEN I HAVE CALLED OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER, WHERE WE PURCHASED OUR CAR, TO ASK WHEN THIS WOULD BE REPAIRED, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE IS NO REMEDY YET, BUT TO BE ASSURED, I WOULD BE THE "FIRST ONE CALLED WHEN THERE IS," AND THIS STATEMENT WAS INSIGNIFICANT TO ME, EVEN USELESS. EVERYONE WITH THIS PROBLEM, GIVEN THE WARNINGS, SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF THE LIST, NOT JUST INSTRUCTED TO SIMPLY "NOT USE THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT" UNTIL THE AIRBAG IS REPLACED! I WAS STRONGLY URGED TO NOT HAVE ANYONE SIT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT UNTIL THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF. MY FORD FUSION HAS BEEN THE FAVORITE CAR I HAVE OWNED! IT'S PRIMARY PURPOSE IS FOR MY HUSBAND AND I TO TRAVEL AND TO SPEND TIME WITH OUR GRANDCHILDREN AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS. RIDING "CHAUFFEUR" STYLE WITH MY HUSBAND WHEN WE TRAVEL IS NOT WHY WE PURCHASED THIS CAR! I COULD UNDERSTAND A WEEK OR TWO, OR POSSIBLY A MONTH, BUT 16 MONTHS WITH NO END IN SIGHT IS RIDICULOUS! WHEN I WANT TO HAVE A DAY OUT WITH MY FRIEND, IT IS EMBARRASSING TO ASK HER TO SIT IN THE BACK SEAT FOR HER SAFETY. THIS ISSUE HAS STRONGLY AFFECTED MY DESIRE TO PURCHASE ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT, AND WE HAVE PURCHASED MANY FORD VEHICLES! MY FATHER-IN-LAW RETIRED FROM FORD MOTOR CO. PLEASE CORRECT THIS PROBLEM ASAP! THE DATE I HAVE ENTERED BELOW AS "DATE THIS HAPPENED" REFERS TO THE FIRST DATE THAT WE WERE ISSUED NOTICE THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG RECALL WAS IN PLACE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND EFFORTS TO CORRECT THIS SITUATION FOR US IMMEDIATELY, SAFELY, CORRECTLY. P.S. WE HAVE HAD MULTIPLE RECALLS ON VARIOUS PARTS OF OUR 2010 FORD FUSION.

  16. Service brakes, Oct 12, 2017

FOLLOWING A BRAKING EVENT THAT ENGAGED THE ABS SYSTEM, THE BRAKES FELT SOFT OR SPONGY. AFTER DEPRESSING THE PEDAL FULLY A FEW TIMES, THE ISSUE SEEMED TO RESOLVE. ANOTHER ABS EVENT OCCURRED A FEW WEEKS AGO, AND THIS TIME DEPRESSING THE PEDAL DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THE SOFT BRAKE FEELING HAS PERSISTED FOR WEEKS. WHEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THERE IS INITIALLY A SMALL AND BRIEF DECELERATION OF THE CAR, FOLLOWED BY AT LEAST 1 INCH OF BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL THAT DOES NOT SEEM TO CAUSE ANY FURTHER BRAKING. FINALLY, WHEN THE PEDAL IS ALMOST FULLY DEPRESSED, THE BRAKES ENGAGE AND THE CAR DECELERATES. THE RESISTANCE FELT IN THE DURING THE TRAVEL OF THE BRAKE PEDAL SEEMS TO CHANGE AS THE CAR WARMS UP, OR AS THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE CHANGES. THE RESULT IS THAT BRAKES FEEL UNRELIABLE AND UNPREDICTABLE EVERY TIME THEY ENGAGE. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROBLEM BEING INVESTIGATED AS A PART OF NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE16017.

POWER STEERING. I HAVE HAD MY CAR FOR ONLY 7 MONTHS WHEN THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPEN . IT HAD AFTER ABOUT A MONTH OF ME HAVING MY CAR WHEN THE SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC. CAME O I DID LET THE DEALERSHIP KNOW AND ALL THEY TOLD ME WAS I HAD PUSH A BUTTON. WELL IT DID GO OFF UNTIL A BOUT A MONTH AGO WHEN IT CAME BACK AS I WAS DRIVING AND ALSO THAT'S WHEN MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT AT THE SAME TIME. I THEN AGAIN TOLD THEM. WELL SINCE THEN I'M STILL TRYING TO GET IT FIX ALONG WITH ALL THE OTHER MAJOR RECALLS THAT ARE ON MY CAR. I DID TELL THEM ABOUT IT AND ALL THEY TOLD ME WAS THERE ARE NO RECALLS ON MY CAR. THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING. FORD DOES NEED TO DO A RECALL ON THE 2010 FORD FUSION.

TAKATA RECALL: RECEIVED SAFETY RECALL IN JULY 2016. STILL WAITING FOR REPLACEMENT. FORD SEEMS TO BE DRAGGING THEIR FEET..

  23. Steering, Oct 8, 2017

POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT- THIS WARNING OCCURS RANDOMLY AND THE POWER STEERING FAILS WHEN TURNING ON THE CAR. OFTEN I CAN REMEDY THE ISSUE BY RESTARTING THE CAR, BUT IT HAS BEEN OCCURRING MORE FREQUENTLY AND RESTARTING THE CAR WON'T FIX IT. I'VE READ MANY ACCOUNTS OF THIS HAPPENING WHILE DRIVING AND REPRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD. TIME TO ISSUE A RECALL ON 2010 MODELS AS FORD HAS FOR OTHER MODELS.

SERVICE POWER STEERING NOW CAME ON AND ALL POWER ASSISTED STEERING WAS LOST, NO WARNING, FUNNY HOW THEY RECALLED 2011 MODELS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM BUT NOT 2010, VERY DANGEROUS, VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN HAPPENED
