Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. 3. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. 4. Service brakes, hydraulic, pedals and linkagesJan 13, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Fusion, Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 Mustang vehicles originally sold or ever registered, in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Hawaii. Exposure to certain environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, high humidity, and salt air can cause the brake pedal bumper to corrode and separate from the brake pedal.

A separated brake pedal bumper can cause the brake lights to illuminate continuously, causing confusion to other drivers and increasing the risk of a crash. On automatic transmission vehicles, a missing brake pedal bumper can allow the driver to shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, allowing the vehicle to rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will replace the brake pedal bumpers and clutch pedal bumpers, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on March 4, 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 13, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S02.

  1. Service brakes, Hydraulic, Mar 4, 2022

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while he was walking towards his vehicle, he noticed that the brake lights were illuminated. The contact stated that there was no key in the ignition and the light switch was in the off position. The contact stated while driving at approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently started to deaccelerate. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to exceed 40 MPH. The vehicle was driven to the local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V011000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 146,000.

  2. Exterior lighting, Service brakes, Feb 5, 2022

In August 2019 I reported to Ford that the brake lights were staying on all the time even when the car was shut off. I was still able to drive my car (Ford Fusion Hybrid 2015) to the Ford Dealer Ship in Sarasota. I was told they have to keep the car because it's a danger and not legal to drive with that kind of defect of my brake lights. I had to pay $ 1115.24 for the repair of the car . Ford had to replace the brake pedal assembly. My car was in the shop for a month. They also replaced the steering wheel bolt which was a recall 18S08. In my opinion I paid for a repair that is now a recall. Will I be able to get my money back and a compensation for not having a car for 1 month provided we are talking here about the same issue?

  3. Steering, Electrical system, Service brakes, Nov 4, 2021

My car has approximately 110,000 miles on it. For the last 6 months, I've been getting alerts on my dashboard ("Service Advance Trak", "Hill Start Not Available", and one or two others). This happens at slow speeds and when turning. When these alerts start, I lose power steering. I've also noticed that when I apply brakes at slow speeds, the ABS engages for a few seconds. I was told by the dealer that it was the engine control module. I had it replaced and reprogrammed. However, the alerts and loss of power steering still happens though not as much.

  4. Electrical system, Service brakes, Sep 21, 2021

At approximately 80,000 miles, the abs censor came on, along with three other lights, one of which is traction control. The brakes begin acting out of control and power steering goes out. Mechanic came to look at it and told me that he’s seen a lot of the same problems with Ford vehicles, specifically fusions and fiestas. He told me it’s an ABS sensor in the electrical harness.

  5. Service brakes, Sep 9, 2021

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard without warning. Despite the failure, the contact was able to drive at low rate of speed with her hazard light activated. As the contact approached her destination, the low brake fluid warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact pulled into a gas station and topped off the brake fluid reservoir however, the brake pedal continued to depress to the floorboard. Once the contact arrived home, she checked the brake fluid level and saw that the reservoir was empty once again. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer where she was informed that her vehicle was not under recall and was given an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and she was given the same information as the dealer. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

  6. Service brakes, Hydraulic, Aug 26, 2021

I was in line at a drive thru and my brakes suddenly went to the floor. I was close to home so I drove carefully having to press the brakes all the way to the floor to stop, barely. I did a visual inspection and saw brake fluid coming from my right front brake line. The fluid was everywhere. The dashboard light came on when it happened. Thankfully I was not driving on the highway or this could have been fatal. The car is now 6 years old and I get regular oil changes and inspections along with routine maintenance. I carefully drove it early in the morning to a mechanic close by and it was confirmed that my brake hydraulic hose had ruptured. Mechanic says usually doesn't see happening this early on in car life. I have 75,000 on it. He recommended I replace the other 3 but cannot afford right now. The labor is expensive part. Also. Had to perform a brake bleed and add fluids again and clean up. A little over $400.00 just for that one side. Brake pads themselves are still good. Tires still good. Hope the others don't happen while driving in faster conditions or in traffic. This is dangerous, just hope I am the only one in the car when it does happen. Am planning on saving to fix the other hoses soon. I had zero warning indicators before it occurred. No pops, squeaks, or noises. It was scary, I don't trust my Ford and will not drive further than a close to home range.

  7. Service brakes, Hydraulic, Aug 9, 2021

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle in a reasonable time. The contact's wife continued driving and noticed that the brake pedal went to the floorboard when depressed. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that brake fluid was spraying onto the ground while his wife was depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed that the front driver’s side brake line had ruptured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer awaiting the brake line to arrive. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 95,000.

  8. Service brakes, Jul 16, 2021

Brake Failure/ Right side passenger side brake hose failed. Heard a loud pop while having my foot on the brake. Went to start driving again and when I pressed my foot on the brake I couldn't stop. I had lost all braking. Brake fluid poured out and had to use the Emergency brake when getting towed to stop.

  9. Service brakes, Jul 4, 2021

BLUF: Safety issue related to the brake sensor pad failing, resulting in unpredictable engine performance. On 02JUL21, I went to eat lunch and parked my car as normal. When I returned to my car, I noticed that my brake lights were still on, despite the engine being off and me being away from the car for 30 minutes. At the time, i assumed that I must have bumped the key fob buttons, and did not overthink it. However, as I drove the vehicle, I noticed significant loss of engine power as I sped up. As in, I would attempt to accelerate (normal rate, not aggressive), and at some random point, the engine would lose power (as though in limp mode), and would not respond to further throttle input. This could be resolved by lifting my foot completely off the gas pedal and reapplying pressure. Then I would accelerate again for approx. 2-3 seconds, then encounter another loss of power (and corresponding loss of speed). As a result, my speed on the road was unpredictable, as the car was not responding to my throttle inputs properly. After a nerve-wracking drive like this, I attempted to troubleshoot the car, and found that the spacer/bearing pad that the brake sensor bears on had fractured into pieces and was no longer functioning. It appears that the car's computer believed that the brakes were being applied when they were not, and so the computer was putting the car into some sort of reduced power mode, but not giving any check engine light warnings or similar notifications (I checked with an OBD reader, no codes given). Ford does not sell a replacement part for this pad, so I have rigged up a short-term alternative, but I am concerned that if it, too, fails - or for anyone else encountering this problem - the erratic speed and inability to control the car will result in a traffic accident.

  10. Service brakes, Hydraulic, Jun 13, 2021

Front right brake line hose ruptured during use on highway to slow vehicle and disengage cruise control. While doing so a loss of resistance was noticed and vehicle was safely driven to a stop with E-brake assistance. Hose was replaced by owner with aftermarket part. Owner still has OEM part if inspection requested. Tracking number 11420735 assigned by NHTSA is for left brake line hose which ruptured 4 months earlier.

  11. Service brakes, Hydraulic, Jun 13, 2021

Front left brake line hoses ruptured while driving. Replaced with OEM part. Ford had +/- 500k Edge vehicles recalled for same issue, but not Fusions of the same era using the same type hose material, likely from same vendor. Occurred in parking lot at slow speed, when brake pedal was pressed it went directly to the floor and all hydraulic pressure lost. Part replaced by owner with OEM part.

  12. Service brakes, Hydraulic, May 23, 2021

Front brake lines on ford fusion 2015 titanium broke. Only have the image of the break lines but the front drivers side break line was bubbled up and the passenger side brake line split while I was driving. My safety was put at risk when my braking system gave out in the middle of an intersection. This was confirmed by a towing company and by a break repair service company the same day. No warning lights came on until after my brake fluid had been fully drained from the car.

FLEXIBLE BRAKE LINE RUPTURED AND CAUSED CATASTROPHIC LOSS OF BRAKES (THURS, MAR 18, 2021). SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED - FIRST TIME WAS ABOUT 15-18 MONTHS AGO - ALSO REPORTED. BOTH TIMES VEHICLE TAKEN TO MAC HAIK FORD DEALERSHIP IN HOUSTON, TX FOR SERVICE. (BOTH TIMES FAILED WHILE IN FAST FOOD WAITING LINE).

  15. Service brakes, Sep 24, 2020

WHILE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE (LESS THAN 5 MPH) I HEARD A CLANK/POP SOUND. WHEN I THEN APPLIED MY BRAKES THEY SUNK TO THE FLOOR AND BARELY STOPPED THE CAR. I HAD NO BRAKES. BRAKE FLUID THEN STARTED TO PUDDLE UNDER THE FRONT PASSENGERS SIDE WHEEL AND ON INSPECTION I NOTICED THE BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING FROM THE BRAKE LINE. I HAVE BEEN CURRENT WITH ALL MY CAR MAINTENANCE AND THERE WAS NEVER A MENTION OF ANY ISSUE WITH THE BREAK LINES. I HAD THIS CAR TOWED AND UPON INSPECTION BY A MECHANIC IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE BRAKE LINES WERE ALSO BULGING AND NEEDED REPLACING. THE FRONT BRAKE LINES GOING FROM THE CALIPER TO THE MAIN BRAKE LINE FITTING, ARE THE PARTS THAT WERE BAD. I HAVE ATTACHED PICTURES AND NOTES FROM THE MECHANIC. I HAVE A LINK I CAN SHARE AS WELL AS AN INVOICE IF NEEDED. I DID NOT SHARE CURRENTLY SINCE IT STATES NOT TO PUT PERSONAL INFORMATION ON HERE.

  16. Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Sep 2, 2020

TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH WITH SUDDEN IMMEDIATE INABILITY TO MAINTAIN SPEED (LOSS OF POWER/ACCELERATION). VEHICLE NOT RESPONSIVE TO ACCELERATION REQUEST UNTIL BELOW 45 MPH AND BEHAVES ERRATICALLY (JUST STOPS RESPONDING AND CAR SLOWS). NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND CAR OTHERWISE RUNS NORMALLY. ACCOMPANYING BEHAVIORS: BRAKE LIGHTS ARE CONSTANTLY ILLUMINATED (STUCK ON), EVEN WHEN NOT BRAKING AND ALSO WHEN CAR IS TURNED OFF AND KEY REMOVED. INTERMITTENTLY WHEN CAR IS STOPPED, MESSAGE "HILL START ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE" IS SHOWN. TOOK CAR INTO FORD DEALERSHIP WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND "FOUND BRAKE SWITCH ENGAGEMENT BUSHING MISSING FROM BRAKE PEDAL" AND OFFERED TO REPLACE THE "BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY" AT A COST OF $1,062.35. FOUND SEVERAL FORUMS COMPLAINING OF THE SAME EXACT BEHAVIORS AND NOTING THAT THE OEM "BRAKE PEDAL STOP PAD" HAD BROKEN INTO PIECES. I ALSO REMEMBERED VACUUMING UP SOME PLASTIC PIECES FROM THE DRIVER FRONT FLOOR AREA NOT REALIZING WHERE THEY HAD COME FROM. THE "BRAKE PEDAL STOP PAD" ITSELF WHICH WOULD COST LESS THAN $5.00 IS NOT OFFERED BY FORD, SO PEOPLE ARE FINDING ALTERNATIVES WHICH MAY BE UNSAFE AND INCLUDE: "BRAKE PEDAL STOP PAD" NOT DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS VEHICLE, ZIP TIES, AND EVEN MAGNETS! 17. Service brakes, Aug 30, 2020

I WAS IN THE DRIVE THRU OF A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT. WHEN I WENT TO PRESS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, IT HAD NO PRESSURE BEHIND IT, AND I WAS JUST BARELY ABLE TO STOP THE CAR. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR INTO A NEARBY PARKING LOT. I WAS JUST BARELY ABLE TO STOP THE CAR USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. MY CAR THEN SHOWED A LOW BRAKE FLUID WARNING ON THE DASH. SO I OPENED THE HOOD AND SAW THAT THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY. I HAD A FAMILY MEMBER COME PICK ME UP AND DRIVE ME HOME. I LATER CAME BACK WITH A BOTTLE OF BRAKE FLUID SO THAT I COULD TRY AND FIND THE LEAK. I DISCOVERED THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT BRAKE LINE HAS BEEN BLOWN OPEN, AND WAS LEAKING BRAKE FLUID AT A SUBSTANTIAL RATE. MY CAR IS STILL SITTING IN THIS PARKING LOT , AND I AM CURRENTLY MAKING PLANS TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC.

  18. Service brakes, Aug 19, 2020

IN JUNE 2020, WHILE DRIVING AND BRAKING FOR STOP SIGNS AND TRAFFIC LIGHTS, BRAKE PEDAL STARTED TO GET A LITTLE MUSHY, THEN THE NEXT TIME I STEPPED ON BRAKE I HEARD/FELT A "POP" AND BRAKES WERE FAILING AND BRAKE FLUID LIGHT CAME ON. I PULLED OFF AND A MECHANIC SAW THAT THE LEFT BRAKE LINE WAS BROKEN, UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND WOULD NEED REPLACING. TODAY AUG 19, 2020, AS I WAS STEPPING ON BRAKE TO SHIFT INTO GEAR, I HEARD THAT SAME "POP", MY BRAKE PEDAL WENT DOWN VERY FAST. I INSPECTED CAR AND FOUND BRAKE FLUID SPRAYED ALL OVER RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WELL AND BRAKE LINE WAS BROKEN, MAKING IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I AM VERY THANKFUL THIS DID NOT HAPPEN YESTERDAY WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY AND ALL OVER CITY STREETS AND UP AND DOWN HILLS. I HAVE REPAIR INVOICES FOR BOTH OCCURRENCES IN JUNE AND AUG, BUT AM UNABLE TO SCAN AND ATTACH AT THIS TIME.

THE CAR WAS PARKED IN A LOT. I STARTED IT, PUT IT IN REVERSE, AND THE CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING MESSAGE CAME UP. THE BRAKES MADE A LOUD METALLIC SCREECHING SOUND WHEN I BEGAN BACKING. WHEN I TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKE, IT WAS SLUGGISH AND DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I HAD IT TOWED TO A NEARBY FORD DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY REPLACED A BRAKE SWITCH. NINE DAYS LATER, THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED, THIS TIME AT MY HOME. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC (NOT THE FORD HOUSE), WHO FOUND A CODE IN HISTORY INDICATING THAT THE PROBLEM HAD A TECHNICIAN NOTICE THAT STATES TO REPLACE POWER BRAKE BOOSTER. HE COULD NOT MAKE THE CAR DUPLICATE THE ISSUE AFTER CLEARING THE CODES, SO I CHOSE NOT TO REPLACE IT. THIS PART AND REPAIR WILL BE OVER $800! WHEN MY MECHANIC CALLED THE FORD HOUSE TO FIND THE CODE THEY USED TO DETERMINE THAT A BRAKE SWITCH WAS OUT, HE WAS TOLD THEY DID NOT MAKE A NOTE OF THE CODE. MY MECHANIC WENT ON TO TELL ME THAT I SHOULD STILL HAVE BRAKES IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN, BUT THEY WILL NOT BE ASSISTED BY THE BOOSTER AND WILL REQUIRE LONGER DISTANCES TO STOP. SINCE THERE IS A TECHNICIAN'S SAFETY ALERT ALREADY POSTED, THIS HAS TO HAVE OCCURRED ON OTHER VEHICLES, SO THERE SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL TO REPLACE THIS BOOSTER. FORD DID CHANGE THE BOOSTER USED THE YEAR AFTER MY VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED. I ALSO WONDER IF THE FORD HOUSE REPLACED A BRAKE SWITCH THAT WAS ACTUALLY FUNCTIONING PROPERLY WHEN THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE THE BOOSTER. SINCE WE HAVE NO CODE TO REFER TO, WE WILL NEVER KNOW. *TR
