Recalls and investigations

  1. Back over prevention, sensing system, cameraSep 12, 2024

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2024 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. The wiring harness for the rearview camera and the center brake light may short circuit, which can disable the rearview camera image and center brake light. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 111, "Rear Visibility" and 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a center brake light that fails to illuminate can fail to indicate to other drivers that the vehicle is slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers replaced the harness for the center brake light and rearview camera and/or the spare tire carrier/harness assembly, as necessary, free of charge. All vehicles were repaired by January 15, 2024. Owner notification letters were mailed September 26, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. CAR HAS BEEN IN SHOP MULTIPLE TIMES WITH MULTIPLE PARTS REPLACEMENTS TO CORRECT JEEP DEATH WOBBLE. STEERING WHEEL SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND DRIVER LOSES CONTROL OF STEERING WHEN CAR HITS BUMPS GOING OVER 55 MPH. REPLACEMENT OF STEERING DAMPNER AND TRACK BAR HAVE ONLY BEEN TEMPORARY FIXES AND THEN PROBLEM STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN. THE PROBLEM IS PARTICULARLY BAD IF YOU HIS A BUMP WHEN THERE IS SLIGHT CURVE IN THE ROAD. ALL SERVICE DOCUMENTATION IS UPLOADED BELOW. STEERING DAMPNER AND TIRE ROD HAVE BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES SINCE 2019 AND IT IS CURRENTLY NOT WORKING AGAIN.

  4. Steering, Mar 11, 2021

IN COLDER TEMPS, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, STEERING BECOMES EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. TOOK THIS TO FCA DEALER AND THEY WERE 'UNABLE TO RECREATE'... BASICALLY DIDN'T FIND RECALL, SO WON'T ATTEMPT TO FIX. THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT UNPREDICTABLY, THEN RE-ENGAGES UNPREDICTABLY. THIS IS GOING TO LEAD TO SOMEONE OVER-CORRECTING AT A HIGH SPEED.

  5. Steering, Other or unspecified, Mar 10, 2021

AT 11K MILES THE JEEP BEGAN GOING INTO A DEATH WOBBLE WHEN DRIVING OVER SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A HOT TOP PATCH ON THE HIGHWAY AT APPX 60 - 65MPH. HAPPENS ON A WEEKLY BASIS NOW AND CAN ONLY BE STOPPED BY BRAKING SIGNIFICANTLY.

  6. Steering, Mar 10, 2021

STEERING WHEEL SHAKES BACK AND FORTH AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 35 MPH TO 80 MPH AFTER HITTING A ROUGH SPOT OR WASHBOARD IN THE ROAD. AT HIGHWAY SPEED IT HAPPENS MOSTLY WHEN HITTING BRIDGE EXPANSION JOINTS

WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT APPROXIMATELY 71MPH, HIT A BUMP VEHICLE STARTED TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE. SLOWING DOWN DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE. I HAD TO PULL OVER AND STOP. VERY SCARY FEELING. BOTH BATTERIES DIED OUT AT APPROXIMATELY 39,000, FIRST THE MAIN BATTERY, THEN THE AUXILIARY BATTERY. NOISE COMING FROM BEHIND THE GLOVE BOX WHEN THE VEHICLE IS POWERED ON OR NOT. CLUNKING NOISE WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STOP, OR FIRST TAKE OFF. (DEALER STATED IT WAS NORMAL (YEAH RIGHT)) PASSENGER VISOR BROKEN. HARDTOP LEAKING IN CENTER FRONT, CAUSING THE REARVIEW MIRROR TO RUIN. (HAS BEEN LOOKED AT BY THE DEALERSHIP NUMEROUS TIMES. AIR CONDITIONING WHEN DRIVING A LONG DISTANCE WILL SOMETIMES BLOW OUT HOT AIR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. COOLANT DRAINED DYE PUT IN TO DETECT LEAKS, NO LEAKS. STILL HAPPENING FLOORBOARDS GET EXTREMELY HOT AT TIMES IT FEELS LIKE THE HEATER IS ON.

IIF I DRIVE OVER 55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, MY VEHICLE STARTS TO SHAKE LIKE A DEATH RATTLE. IT BECOMES HARD TO CONTROL AND ALMOST CAUSES AN ACCIDENT

  9. Steering, Suspension, Mar 3, 2021

WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OUR 2018 JEEP WRANGLE UNLIMITED SPORT STARTED VIOLENTLY SHAKING SO BAD I COULD HARDLY HOLD ONTO THE STEERING WHEEL. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND THE SHAKING SUBSIDED. THIS HAS HAPPEN ABOUT FIVE TIMES SINCE IT FIRST OCCURRED. I ALSO RECEIVED A RECALL FROM FIAT CHRYSLER AUTOMOBILES (FCA) STATING THERE WAS A RECALL (V41) WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO FIX THIS ISSUE. WE MADE ARRANGEMENTS AT OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO GET THE RECALL WORK DONE BUT THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PART ON HAND EVEN AFTER THEY CONFIRMED THEY DID. THAT WAS ON JANUARY 15, 2021. THE DEALERSHIP (THOMPSONS CHRYSLER JEEP IN PLACERVILLE, CA) WAS TO CALL US WHEN THEY RECEIVED THE PART. IT HAD BEEN OVER A MONTH AND A HALF AND WE HAVE NOT HEARD A WORD FROM THEM EVEN AFTER NUMEROUS EMAILS ASKING FOR AN UPDATE.

2018 JEEP WRANGLER. CONSUMER STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE BEGAN SHAKING, VIBRATING AND RATTLING. *LD THE CONSUMER STATED THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THE STEERING DAMPNER FAILED AND NEEDED TO REPLACED. THE TECHNICIAN ALSO STATED, THERE WAS A RECALL PERTAINING TO THE FAILURE BUT, THE VEHICLE'S MODEL WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE CONSUMER STATED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED THE DASH AND GAUGES' LIGHTS WERE BOUNCING AND FLICKERING. THE WIRING HAD BEEN DAMAGED AND THE DEALER WOULD NOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY. *JS

  11. Steering, Structure, Lane departure, Feb 26, 2021

2018 JEEP WRANGLER HAS TERRIFYING STEERING ISSUES. CONSISTENTLY WHILE STEERING A HIGHWAY CURVE AT 40-55 MPH MY JEEP STEERING DISENGAGES AND RESULTS IN AN UNSAFE INABILITY TO MAINTAIN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE STEERING CAN BE DESCRIBED AS LOOSE AND COMMONLY DESCRIBED BY PASSENGERS AS THE UNSETTLING FEELING THAT THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE IS COMING OFF THE WHEELS. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE NOT BEEN INJURED YET BUT IF THIS CONTINUES I DON'T THINK IT WILL REMAIN THAT WAY.

  12. Steering, Feb 25, 2021

VEHICLES HAS EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHICH MAKES STAYING/DRIVING IN THE LANE DIFFICULT ON HIGHWAYS AND INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT ON SIDE ROADS. DEALER HAS REPLACED THE STEERING GEARBOX AND NOW SAYS IT DRIVES AS IT SOHULD. TAKEN VEHICLE TO OTHER SHOPS AND WAS TOLD THAT WHILE MOVING THE STEERING WHEEL BACK AND FORTH THE DRAG LINK MOVES IMMEDIATLY BUT THE TIE ROD DOES NOT WHICH CONTRIBUTES TO THE EXCESSIVE PLAY FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. ALSO THE GEARBOX MOVES AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE FRAME WHICH EXASPERATES THE PROBLEM EVEN MORE.

STEERING WHEEL SHAKE ABOVE 50 MPH AND DEATH WOBBLE MAKING A HAZARD CONDITION

  14. Steering, Feb 17, 2021

STEERING WHEEL BEGAN SHAKING UNCONTROLLABLY AFTER HITTING SMALL BUMP ON HIGHWAY GOING 70 MPH. WEATHER WAS BELOW FREEZING. HAD TO PULL OVER TO SHOULDER AND SLOW DOWN IN ORDER TO STOP THE SHAKING.

  15. Steering, Feb 16, 2021

WHEN TEMPS NEAR FREEZING AND THE VEHICLE IS COLD WHEN DRIVING AROUND 55 AND ROUNDING A CURVE THE STEERING WILL LOCK UP JUST AFTER 10 DEGREE OF WHEEL MOVEMENT. THE POWER STEERING LOCKS UP LIKE YOU HIT A MAXIMUM LIMIT AND THEN RELEASES.. HAPPENS ABOUT 2 TO 3 TIMES THEN GOES AWAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR DRIVE. DOES NOT HAPPEN WHEN WARM. IT HAS HAPPENED EVER SINCE THE DAY I BOUGHT IT.

  16. Steering, Feb 13, 2021

STEERING WHEEL STIFFENS WHEN TAKING CURVES IN HIGHWAY AND REQUIRES EXCESSIVE FORCE TO UNLOCK BEFORE HITTING SOMETHING'THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENED FREQUENTLY AND REQUIRES MORE FORCE EACH TIME.

  17. Steering, Electrical system, Feb 12, 2021

THE JEEP STARTS TO SHAKE WHILE DRIVING AND IT IS HARD TO HOLD ONTO STEERING WHEEL. FEELS LIKE YOU HAVE NO CONTROL. THE MILEAGE ODOMETER GOES FROM 999,999 BACK TO CORRECT ONE. IT IS A BRAND NEW 2018. CAN'T GET THE STEERING PART BECAUSE IT IS ON BACK ORDER. WE DIDN'T EVEN GET A NOTICE ABOUT RECALL. I AM SO BLESSED MY DAUGHTER HAS NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT GOING TO AND FROM COLLEGE

  18. Steering, Feb 8, 2021

THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP WHILE DRIVING. THIS ESPECIALLY HAPPENS IN COLD WEATHER. THE STEERING WHEEL IS EITHER DIFFICULT TO TURN / SLOW TO RESPOND TO TURNING, OR, ON ONE OCCASION (FEB 7, 2021), IT LOCKED UP COMPLETELY WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I WAS TRYING TO FOLLOW A CURVE IN THE ROAD AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND. I HAD TO STOP THE CAR TO GET THE WHEEL TO UNLOCK. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THE LAST MONTH, AND CULMINATED IN THE VERY ALARMING EPISODE ON FEB 7. AFTER GOOGLING THIS ISSUE, I'M AWARE THAT IT IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN JEEP WRANGLERS (LIKE MINE) PURCHASED IN LATE 2017 THROUGH EARLY 2018. I PURCHASED MY JEEP IN FEB, 2018. I'VE NOTIFIED CHRYSLER AND MY DEALERSHIP. MY DEALERSHIP INFORMS ME THAT IT IS LIKELY THE GEARBOX, BUT THEY ARE ON A 3 WEEK BACK ORDER. I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE, BUT AM TAKING IT TO MY DEALERSHIP TOMORROW (FEB 9) TO BE DIAGNOSED, AND HOPE TO ARRIVE THERE SAFELY.

  19. Steering, Feb 5, 2021, crash

WHILE PULLING OUT OF A GAS STATION IN A RIGHT HAND TURN TO ENTER A HIGHWAY, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED IN PLACE IN THE RIGHT TURN AND I WAS UNABLE TO TURN BACK TO THE LEFT AND CONTINUED IN THE RIGHT HAND TURN INTO THE BARRICADES. IT WAS PHYSICALLY LOCKED.

  20. Steering, Feb 3, 2021

LOSE OF STABLE STEERING WHEN ROAD IRREGULARITY IS PASTED OVER AT ANY SPEED ABOVE 50 MPH. HAVING TO COMPLETELY STOP VEHICLE TO RECOVER STEERING.

  21. Steering, Feb 3, 2021

FOR SOME REASON WHEN DRIVING OVER 60MPH AND UNDER 40 DEGREES OUTSIDE, THE STEERING WHEEL STICKS OR BECOMES VERY STIFF WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURNING RIGHT DURING A CURVE IN THE ROAD OR WHEN CHANGING LANES. THE DANGER IS THAT IT WILL THEN SUDDENLY UN-STICK AND CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO SWERVE TO THE RIGHT. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS IN 2018. THERE WAS A DEALER SOFTWARE PROGRAMING UPDATE THAT WAS PERFORMED HOWEVER EACH WINTER WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW 40 THE ISSUE STILL OCCURS.

  22. Steering, Suspension, Jan 29, 2021

2018 JEEP ONLY HAS 25,000 MILES AND VIBRATES VIOLENTLY WHEN YOU HIT A BUMP DRIVING OVER 50 - 60 MPH. HARD TO CONTROL. THIS HAPPENS ON THE HIGHWAY AND ON STREETS WHERE SPEED PERMITS.

  23. Steering, Jan 29, 2021

JEEP WRANGLER JL UNLIMITED SPORT S WITH DEATH WOBBLE HAD STEERING STABILIZER ADDED UNDER RECALL TO FIX THE ISSUE. AFTER 30000 MILES THE DEATH WOBBLE HAS RETURNED UNDER 45 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT AFTER HITTING A POTHOLE, TRAIN TRACKS, OR OTHER OBJECT.

  24. Steering, Jan 25, 2021

MY JEEP STEERING IS LOCKING WHEN I TURN LEFT OR SLIGHTLY TAKE A LEFT CURVE ON THE HIGHWAY, ALMOST CAUSE ME TO CRASH ON A BRIDGE, STEERING LOOKS AND ALL OF A SUDDEN IT COMES BACK WHEN YOU TURN HARDER, TOOK IT TO THE DEALER TODAY AND THEY 'COULDN'T MAKE IT DO THAT' OF COURSE AROUND THE PARKING LOT FOR 5 MINUTES ISN'T GOING TO DO IT, NOW THEY WANT ME TO PAY A DIAGNOSTIC AND DRIVE BACK HOME,

  25. Steering, Jan 25, 2021

THE POWER STEERING WILL LOCK UP AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS USUALLY OVER 30 MPH AND WILL COME BACK ON WHEN THE SPEED GOES BELOW 30MPH. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AS IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN WHEN THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT. ALSO, WHEN IT RANDOMLY COMES BACK ON THE VEHICLE WILL OVERCORRECT DUE TO THE POWER STEERING COMING BACK ON. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN TO TWO DEALERSHIPS AND THEY HAVE YET TO FIX THIS ISSUE.
