Recalls and investigations

  1. Back over prevention, sensing system, cameraSep 12, 2024

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2024 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. The wiring harness for the rearview camera and the center brake light may short circuit, which can disable the rearview camera image and center brake light. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 111, "Rear Visibility" and 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a center brake light that fails to illuminate can fail to indicate to other drivers that the vehicle is slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers replaced the harness for the center brake light and rearview camera and/or the spare tire carrier/harness assembly, as necessary, free of charge. All vehicles were repaired by January 15, 2024. Owner notification letters were mailed September 26, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. 1. Steering, Suspension, Jan 23, 2021

DEATH WOBBLE OCCURS AT SPEEDS AROUND 60 MPH, TRIGGERED BY SMALL BUMPS ON THE ROAD. EXTREME SHAKING OCCURS ON THE STEERING OF THE VEHICLE. THE WOBBLING, WHEN IT IS TRIGGERED, CONTINUES EVEN IF THE ROAD IS SMOOTH AFTER THE BUMPS. THE WOBBLING IS NOT A VERTICAL VIBRATION FROM THE ROAD, IT IS A LEFT-RIGHT VIBRATION ON THE STEERING, WHICH THEN CAUSES VIOLENT SHAKING OF THE WHOLE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENS IN HIGHWAYS AT REGULAR CRUISING SPEEDS 60 MPH ON STRAIGHT ROAD SEGMENTS, TYPICALLY AFTER GOING THROUGH A SMALL PATCH OF IRREGULAR (LITTLE BUMPY) ROAD, LIKE A BRIDGE OR AN OVERPASS ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE HAD ABOUT 5 VISITS TO THE DEALER IN JEEP-CHRYSLER OF MORGANTOWN, WV AND THEY CLAIM THAT SINCE THEY CANNOT REPLICATE THE CONDITION, THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. BUT THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW.

  2. Steering, Suspension, Wheels, Jan 9, 2021

FRONT END WOBBLE OCCURS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (55-65)MPH DURING LANE CHANGES OR HITTING BUMPS IN THE ROAD. THIS GIVES A FEELING OF STEERING WILL CAUSE KEEP TO GO OUT OF CONTROL. SEVERE BRAKING IS ONLY REMEDY RIGHT NOW. IT CAN CAUSE ACCIDENT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS

  3. Steering, Suspension, Jan 8, 2021

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING AT VARIOUS HIGH SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE WOBBLED UNCONTROLLABLY WITHOUT WARNING AFTER GOING OVER A BUMP IN THE ROADWAY. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO GLENDALE DODGE CHRYSLER JEEP (900 S BRAND BLVD, GLENDALE, CA 91204) WHERE IT WAS ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE DEALER WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE DEATH WOBBLE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER ALSO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS FAMILIAR AND THAT ENGINEERS WERE WORKING ON A REMEDY TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING GEAR BOX. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 18,000.

  4. Steering, Suspension, Jan 7, 2021

VEHICLE LOOSES STEERING CONTROL WHEN ENCOUNTERING SMALL BUMPS AT MEDIUM SPEEDS. VEHICLE HAS BEEN "FIXED" BY AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP UNDER FCA WARRANTY, AND CRITICAL SAFETY DEFECT CONTINUES. DRIVER LOSES ABILITY TO CONTROL AND STEER THE VEHICLE WHEN THIS HAPPENS

  5. Steering, Jan 6, 2021

ON HUNDREDS OF OCCASIONS THE LAST THREE YEARS OF OWNERSHIP, I HAVE HAD SERIOUS STEERING PROBLEMS WITH DEATH WOBBLE, STEERING WANDER, AND LOCKED-UP STEERING. DEALERS HAVE PERFORMED WARRANTY WORK ON THE TRACK BAR AND STEERING STABILIZER IN THE PAST. HOWEVER, THESE REMEDIES HAVE NOT CORRECTED MY ISSUES. JEEP HAS ANNOUNCED A SERVICE BULLETIN OF THE STEERING BOX, BUT HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE PART. I'M PERSUADED THAT THIS PART IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HUNDREDS OF COUNTS OF THIS ISSUE. THE PART HAS BEEN SILENTLY USED IN NEWER PRODUCTION JEEPS, BUT FOR THOSE OF US THAT HAVE THE FIRST MODEL YEAR (AND OVER BASIC WARRANTY MILEAGE) ARE LEFT WITH THIS BURDEN. I PERSISTENTLY HAVE LOCKED-UP STEERING, MORE OFTEN PRONE IN A COLDER CLIMATE, AND HAVE HAD HUNDREDS OF NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES FROM THIS ISSUE. THE STEERING WHEEL IS DIFFICULT TO TURN AND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE VEHICLE IS UNABLE TO BE TURNED. WITH ENOUGH FORCE AND SIGNIFICANT BRAKING I AM ABLE TO FREE THE STEERING FROM CENTER INTO THE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL. MANY TIMES THE VEHICLE PERFORMS AN OVER CORRECTION AFTER BECOMING UNSTUCK. I PERSONALLY FEEL DEATHLY AFRAID OF MY JEEP AND HAVE RECENTLY CANCELLED UPCOMING TRIPS INTO COLORADO'S MOUNTAINS BECAUSE I HAVE HAD EXPERIENCES ON THE MOUNTAIN PASSES THIS WINTER THAT HAVE BEEN TOO TERRIFYING. I'M READY TO SELL MY JEEP, BUT KNOWING OF ITS PROBLEM, I'D BE DEVASTATED TO FIND OUT MY VEHICLE KILLED THE NEXT OWNER. IT'S ABSURD THAT MYSELF AND MUCH OF THE JEEP WRANGLER COMMUNITY HAVE HAD TO RELY SOLELY ON THE AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY TO REPLACE STOCK COMPONENTS IN ORDER TO FEEL COMFORTABLE OPERATING OUR VEHICLES - JEEP SHOULD BE FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR FAILED ENGINEERING. FOR CONTEXT, I HAVE UPGRADED THE TRACK BAR, DRAG LINK, TIE ROD AND OTHERS TO INDUSTRY-BEST COMPONENTS IN AN ATTEMPT TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES AFTER JEEP'S WARRANTY REPLACEMENTS COULDN'T. JEEP MUST FIX THESE STEERING ISSUES!

  6. Steering, Jan 2, 2021

THIS JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED RUBICON WAS PURCHASED USED WITH 26000 MILES. ON THE TEST DRIVE IT SEEMED OK HOWEVER, ON THE DRIVE HOME AFTER PURCHAST (ABOUT 90 MILES) I NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WANDERED. AT TIMES IT WAS DIFFICULT TO KEEP IN THE CORRECT LANE ON THE INTERSTATE WITHOUT VERY CLOSE ATTENTION AND CONSTANT CORRECTION. VERY IRRITATING AND TIREING. THINKING IT WAS MAYBE WIND, (I TRADED A 2013 JEEP UNLIMITED RUBICON) I LATER DROVE IT ON A DAY WITH NO WIND. IT DID THE SAME WANDERING. THERE IS SOMETHING UNUSUAL ABOUT THE STEERING OF THIS VEHICLE.

  7. Steering, Dec 29, 2020

VEHICLE STEERING LICKINGS UP WHILE DRIVING ABOVE 30MPH PARTICULARLY IN COLDER WEATHER CONDITIONS. WHILE DRIVING STEERING LOCKS AND HAS ALREADY NEARLY CAUSES A HEAD ON COLLISION AND INTO A DITCH.

  8. Steering, Dec 26, 2020

STEERING BECOMES VERY TIGHT AND SEEMS TO LOCK UP WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURN LEFT WHILE DRIVING. THEN WHEN IT RELEASES IT CAUSES THE CAR TO OVER STEER SOMETIMES INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC. THIS HAPPENS BOTH OF LOCAL ROADS AND HIGHWAYS.

  9. Steering, Dec 23, 2020

DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 75MPH AND WENT OVER A BRIDGE. THE JEEP STARTED TO SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLY. HAD TO SLOW DOWN TO GET IT TO STOP SHAKING

  10. Steering, Power train, Dec 22, 2020

WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME STIFF FOR ABOUT A COUPLE OF SECONDS,WHEN IT GOT BACK TO NORMAL IT CORRECTED INTO INCOMING TRAFFIC, I NEARLY HIT INCOMING TRAFFIC,IT WAS PRETTY SCARY CAUSE THE STEERING WAS VERY HARD AND STIFF , I WAS TRYING TO CORRECT THE VEHICLE CAUSE IT WAS MOVING TOWARDS THE LEFT EVEN THOUGH I WAS TRYING TO CORRECT IT TO THE RIGHT, WHEN IT LOOSENED UP IT JERKED HARD TO THE LEFT TO INCOMING TRAFFIC,THANKFULLY THERE WAS NO INCOMING TRAFFIC AT THE TIME, ALSO I NOTICED THAT WHEN I PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN GEAR THERE'S NO MOVEMENT, IT ACTS LIKE IT'S IN NEUTRAL, I HAVE TO PUT IT BACK IN PARK AND RESHIFT

  11. Steering, Dec 17, 2020

VEHICLES STEERING GETS A FLIGHTY/WANDERING FEELING AS SPEED INCREASES 40+ MPH, ESPECIALLY ON SECONDARY ROADS. WHEN DRIVING AROUND CURVES OR OVER ANY ABNORMALITY IN THE ROAD THE JEEP WILL WANDER OUT OF ITS LANE AND THEN THE PLAY IN THE STEERING MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO GET IT BACK IN A CONTROLLED MANNER. THE CONSTANT WANDERING REQUIRES CONSTANT INPUT FROM THE OPERATOR TO KEEP THE VEHICLE CENTERED. JEEP KNOWS THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE STEERING BOXES IN THE 2018-2010 JL' AND JT'S, AND HAS ISSUED A TSB IN REFERENCE TO THIS, BUT GETTING THEM TO REPLACE THE STEERING BOX IS A HUGE HASSLE AS IT SEEMS MOST DEALERSHIPS ARE DEBUNKING THIS TSB.

  12. Steering, Dec 17, 2020

I FEEL VERY UNSAFE TRYING TO KEEP MY JEEP GOING DOWN THE ROAD IN A STRAIGHT LINE. THE STEERING RANDOMLY AND OFTEN WANTS TO JUST TAKE OFF TO EITHER SIDE OR THE OTHER ON PERFECTLY SMOOTH ROADS AND GENERALLY 'WANDERS' FOR NO REASON. I PRETTY MUCH DREAD IT WHEN I NEED TO DRIVE IT NOW. IT'S BASICALLY A FIGHT.

  13. Steering, Dec 14, 2020

SO TODAY IT'S A LITTLE ON THE COLD SIDE. I JUMPED INTO THE JEEP AND ONTO THE HIGHWAY AND GET UP TO 60MPH. THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME DECIDES TO PRETTY MUCH STOP IN MY LANE. VERY LITTLE TIME TO REACT, I TRY TO TURN INTO THE LANE TO MY RIGHT AND THE STEERING FEELS REALLY STIFF LIKE THE TIRE IS AGAINST SOMETHING THEN SUDDENLY THERE IS NO RESISTANCE CAUSING ME TO OVERCORRECT AND NEARLY LOSE CONTROL OF THE JEEP. SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, THE STEERING FEELS NORMAL. I SPEED BACK UP AND AS I GET UP TO AROUND 50-60MPH THE STEERING SUDDENLY FEELS VERY TIGHT AGAIN, NOT WANTING TO TURN MORE THAN 15-20 DEGREES, THEN IT GOES AWAY AND A BIT FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD IT SUDDENLY COMES BACK. I THINK LITEBRITE HAD A VIDEO OF THIS A WHILE BACK. I'VE NEVER HAD ANY STEERING ISSUES WITH MY JL. IT DRIVES ABSOLUTELY GREAT BUT I HAVE TO SAY THIS IS TERRIFYING BECAUSE IT FELT LIKE SOMEONE WAS HOLDING THE STEERING WHEEL TO PREVENT ME FROM TURNING AND THEN SUDDENLY JUST LET GO CAUSING OVER CORRECTION.

  14. Steering, Vehicle speed control, Dec 12, 2020

JUST GOT THIS JEEP USED FROM JEEP DEALERSHIP BACK IN JULY. I USUALLY DON'T DRIVE OVER 60 BECAUSE OF THE SPEED LIMITS AROUND HERE. BUT I JUST DID WHEN I WENT TO GO VISIT FAMILY 2 HOURS AWAY AND MY STEERING WHEEL SEEMED TO LOCK UP WHEN I WENT ANYWHERE FROM 60/70MPH. I HAD TO JERK THE STEERING WHEEL SLIGHTLY TO ONE SIDE SO I COULD DRIVE ON A BENDED PORTION OF THE ROAD. IT'S NOT LISTED AS A RECALL BUT THIS IS SERIOUSLY CONCERNING TO ME. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST THAT ONE TIME BUT I TEST IT OUT WHEN I DROVE BACK HOME AND THE LAST 6 TIMES I WENT TO VISIT AND THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENS EVERY TIME. MOST RECENT TIME IT HAPPENED WAS YESTERDAY AND MY UNCLE SAID TO REPORT IT.

  15. Steering, Suspension, Dec 12, 2020

STEERING DAMPER RECALL WAS COMPLETED I'M STILL EXPERIENCING THE "DEATH WOBBLE".VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO DEALERSHIP 6 TIMES AND GET TOLD EVERY TIME THAT EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD. PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN I HIT A BUMP OR A ROUGH SPOT ON THE ROAD AND THE VEHICLE AND STEERING WHEEL BEGIN TO SHAKE LIKE THE VEHICLE IS JUMPING ON THE ROAD. TYPICALLY OCCURS WHEN TRAVELING OVER 50 MPH AND ONLY CORRECTS AFTER YOU SLOW DOWN. ISSUE CONTINUES TO HAPPEN AND AND I FEEL THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE AND CAN POSE A LIFE THREATENING.

  16. Steering, Dec 11, 2020

STEERING IS LOCKING UP WHILE GOING AROUND CORNER AT 65 MILE PER HR JUST STARTED AFTER NEARLY 2 YEARS AND LESS THAN 10000 MILES

  17. Steering, Dec 10, 2020

TOOK MY WIFE VEHICLE TO WORK SEE WHAT THIS SHAKINESS SHE EXPIRENCED. AND WHEN I TELL YOU IT HAD TO BE THEE MOST SCARIEST THING I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP THEY TOLD ME IT'S A BAD STEERING STABILIZER WE WILL SEE. I WANT THIS ON THE RECORD THIS IS MY SECOND TIME FOR THIS ISSUE. I DO HAVE VIDEO PROOF UPON REQUEST.

  18. Steering, Other or unspecified, Dec 9, 2020

WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY MY STEERING LOCKED UP AND I ALMOST HIT THE CONCRETE MEDIAN. IT IS HAPPING AT HIGH AND LOW SPEEDS. TAKE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND I AM ALWAYS TOLD NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE.

  19. Steering, Lane departure, Dec 7, 2020

VEHICLE DOING DEATH WOBBLE FROM REPETITIVELY FROM SPEEDS 50 ON UP TO 70 AT TIMES LOWER. HARD TO CONTROL.

  20. Steering, Electrical system, Visibility/wiper, Dec 1, 2020

I WAS GOING AROUND THE CORNER AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP MAKING IT TO WHERE I HAD TO PULL HARD THE OTHER WAY JUST TO UNLOCK IT. AND WHEN I FIRST GOT THIS VEHICLE THE WINDSHIELD SHATTERED WITHIN TWO MONTHS OF OWNING THIS JEEP. AND NOW THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKING UP AND ALSO MY CONTROLS ARE NOT WORKING ON MY STEERING WHEEL AND THE COLUMN IN THE MIDDLE AC HEATER HEATER ALL THE CONTROLS.

  21. Steering, Suspension, Nov 28, 2020

MY JEEP HAS A "DEATH WOBBLE" THAT HAPPENS IN EXCESS OF 50 MILES AN HOUR IF THE JEEP HITS ROUGH ROAD, UNEVEN PAVEMENT OR GOING INTO A CURVE ON THE INTERSTATE, IT WILL BEGIN TO SHAKE SO VIOLENTLY ITS AS THOUGH THERE IS A MINI EARTHQUAKE INSIDE THE JEEP. IT IS TERRIFYING. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE, BUT AFTER TAKING MY JEEP TO TWO DIFFERENT JEEP DEALERSHIPS IN TWO DIFFERENT STATES, THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIX THIS ISSUE. NOTE THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE SINCE I BOUGHT THE JEEP IN 2019, IT SEEMED TO GET BETTER AFTER I TOOK IT IN FOR THE ORIGINAL RECALL, BUT SINCE OCT 2020 HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE AFTER THE JEEP DEALERSHIP HAS WORKED ON IT. SINCE OCT 2020 AND AS OF NOV 28 2020, I HAVE TAKEN THE JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS ISSUE 3 TIMES, I WILL HAVE A 4TH UNDER MY BELT WHEN THEY RECEIVE SOME OTHER PART THEY SAY THEY JUST FOUND AND NEED TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE.

  22. Steering, Suspension, Nov 28, 2020

TRAVELING WEST ON I 40 IN WILMINGTON NC APPROX 70 MPH WHEN VEHICLE BEGAN TO SUDDENLY SHAKE VIOLENTLY FOR NO APPARENT REASON. MY WIFE BECAME SO SCARED AS SHE DROVE, WE HAD TO PULL OVER AND I HAD TO TAKE OVER DRIVING. SHE WILL NOT DRIVE THIS JEEP AGAIN. I'VE NEVER SEEN A VEHICLE SHAKE SO VIOLENTLY AS IF THE ENTIRE FRONT END WAS ABOUT TO FALL OUT FROM UNDER THE CAR ANY SECOND. NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, I THINK IT DEFINITELY IS A SAFETY ISSUE. 3 LANE HIGHWAY, 70 MPH, CARS ON EVERY SIDE OF YOU AND YOU HAVE TO SLAM ON BRAKES, OR THE INSTINCT IS TO SLAM ON BRAKES BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOU ARE ABOUT TO DIE OR NOT. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS FRONT END ISSUE WITH JEEP WRANGLER.

  23. Steering, Nov 27, 2020

WHEN GOING AROUND CORNERS AROUND 60MPH STEERING LOCKS UP AND WHEN FORCED TO TURN IT UNLOCKS AND SWERVES LEFT OR RIGHT DEPENDING ON THE CORNER. WORSE IN COLD CONDITIONS. VERY DANGEROUS IF IN TRAFFIC!

  24. Steering, Nov 25, 2020

WHEN THE TEMPERATURES ARE COLDER I CAN NOT STEER THE VEHICLE. DRIVING ALONG GOING AROUND A CURVE AND THE JEEP WILL NOT TURN

  25. Steering, Electrical system, Nov 23, 2020

WHILE DRIVING, THE BATTERY VOLTAGE LIGHT CAME ON. WE MONITORED THE VOLTAGE AND NOTED THAT IT WAS DROPPING QUICKLY FROM AROUND 11.7 TO A LOW POINT OF ABOUT 8.9. WHEN THE VOLTAGE GOT THAT LOW, MANY DIFFERENT WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN THIS HAPPENED, ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET GOING UNDER 20 MPH. IT WAS IMMEDIATELY AFTER A TURN. CAUSE OF ISSUE IS UNKNOWN. THE DAY BEFORE, THE BATTERY VOLTAGE WARNING LIGHT HAD COME ON. I DID SOME BASIC DIAGNOSTICS AND DID NOT LOCATE AN ISSUE WITH THE BATTERY CONNECTIONS OR BATTERY ITSELF.
