Recalls and investigations

  1. Back over prevention, sensing system, cameraSep 12, 2024

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2024 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. The wiring harness for the rearview camera and the center brake light may short circuit, which can disable the rearview camera image and center brake light. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 111, "Rear Visibility" and 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a center brake light that fails to illuminate can fail to indicate to other drivers that the vehicle is slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers replaced the harness for the center brake light and rearview camera and/or the spare tire carrier/harness assembly, as necessary, free of charge. All vehicles were repaired by January 15, 2024. Owner notification letters were mailed September 26, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. 1. Steering, Oct 17, 2018

I PICKED MY NEW VEHICLE UP 18 HOURS AGO WITH 5 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I CAN REPORT UNSAFE HIGHWAY DRIVING UNDER DRY AND CALM DRIVING CONDITIONS. DRIVER IS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE EXCESSIVE STEERING WHEEL INPUT TO OFFSET THE CONTINOUS UNEXPECTED CHANGE IN DIRECTION OF THE VEHICLE.

  2. Steering, Suspension, Oct 17, 2018

TAKATA RECALL OVER STEERING PLAY IN STEERING FRONT OUTER TIRE WEAR AFTER ONLY 3K MILES IN MOTION ON HIGHWAY

  3. Steering, Oct 17, 2018

THE STEERING HAS TOO MUCH PLAY AND DOES NOT RESPOND WELL. IT BECOMES WORSE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. IT IS VERY HARD TO CONTROL BECAUSE IT WILL DRIFT THEN MAY OVER CORRECT WHEN YOU STEER TO MAINTAIN YOUR LANE. IT HAS DONE THIS SINCE DAY ONE.

  4. Steering, Engine, Oct 17, 2018

WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, I ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TIGHTNESS FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. DISABLING ME TO TURN LEFT OR RIGHT, TYPICALLY ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE ACCELERATING. IF I WAS TO TURN THE VEHICLE'S STEERING WHEEL FOR A SLIGHT CURVE OR TURN THE VEHICLE WOULD REMAIN STRAIGHT MAKING THE VEHICLE IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE THE APPROPRIATE ADJUSTMENT. VEHICLE WAS PULLED TO SAFETY FOR A RESET ( TURNING OFF THE ENGINE FOR 5 MINS BEFORE RESTARTING). UPON ACCELERATING THE TIGHTNESS OF THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN, EVENTUALLY CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL.

  5. Steering, Oct 16, 2018

SAME COMPLAINT AS MANY OTHERS.

  6. Steering, Oct 16, 2018

JEEP SHAKES VIOLENTLY ANY TIME IT HITS A BUMP ABOVE 60MPH SO BADLY I HAVE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. MULTIPLE TIMES I'VE NEARLY BEEN REAR ENDED TRYING STOP TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS NOT MY FIRST WRANGLER I HAVE OWNED 5. I KNOW HOW A JEEP RIDES. THIS IS NOT A SAFE VEHICLE AT ALL. THIS JEEPS HAS NOTHING AFTER MARKET ON IT. I'VE TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM. I CAN'T AFFORD TO TRADE IT IN. BUT I DON'T WANT MY KIDS IN. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. OTHERS HAVE ALREADY REPORTED THIS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. *DT UPDATED 11/29/18*JB

  7. Steering, Suspension, Other or unspecified, Oct 16, 2018

THERE HAS BEEN A MAJOR RECALL RELATED TO THE TRACK BAR WELDS ON THE JL MODEL WRANGLERS AND WHEN I SEARCH MY VIN IT IS NOT INCLUDED BUT MANY OF THE WELDS ON MY FRAME ARE RUSTING ALREADY AND APPEAR TO BE "BAD" WELDS. I AM A PROFESSIONAL WELDER AND I KNOW WHAT A GOOD WELD LOOKS LIKE. PLEASE HELP ME ADDRESS THE ISSUE WITH THE MANY "BAD" WELDS ON MY BRAND NEW JEEP.

  8. Steering, Oct 16, 2018

AS DRIVING MY NEW JEEP I NOTICE I WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THE HANDLING .STEERING THE JEEP, TO MUCH PLAY ON STEERING, KIND OF A BIG TURN OFF COMING OFF.SPECIALLY ON THE MAINE HIGHWAYS WITH EXTRA PEOPLE IN THE CAR

  9. Steering, Oct 15, 2018

TL* THE CONTACT LEASED A 2018 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL FELT EXTREMELY LOOSE WHILE MAKING TURNS OR DRIVING ABOVE 45 MPH. THE DEALER (HERITAGE CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM PARKVILLE, 9219 HARFORD RD, PARKVILLE, MD 21234, 1-877-391-7850) WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT YET DEVELOPED A SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V343000 (STEERING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

  10. Steering, Oct 15, 2018

THE VEHICLE HAS EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE STEERING. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE WANDERS AND EXCESSIVE STEERING WHEEL TRAVEL IS REQUIRED TO BRING THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE CENTER OF THE LANE. THIS OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND WHEN TRAVELING AT BOTH CITY AND HIGHWAY SPEEDS. IT IS A CONSTANT STRUGGLE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE CENTERED WHEN TRAVELING. THE ISSUE IS WORSE WHEN TRAVELING ON SLIGHTLY UNEVEN OR ABOVE NORMAL ROAD CROWN. THE STEERING WHEEL CAN BE CENTERED, OR CROOKED TO EITHER SIDE. THIS DEMONSTRATES THE EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE WHEEL.

  11. Steering, Oct 15, 2018

LOOSE STEERING CAUSING VEHICLE DRIFTING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I HAVE TO CONSTANTLY CORRECT THE VEHICLE FROM DRIFTING. EXTREME PLAY AND DEAD SPOTS IN STEERING WHEEL. THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN STRAIGHT LINE AND STAYING IN LANE. VEHICLE DRIFTS TOWARDS OTHER LANES AND VEHICLES WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. REQUIRES DRIVER TO CORRECT STEERING WHEEL TO STAY IN LANE CONSTANTLY.

  12. Steering, Suspension, Oct 14, 2018

VEHICLE SHAKES UNCONTROLLABLY BACK AND FORTH AFTER HITTING BUMP OR CHANGE IN PAVEMENT HEIGHT AT HIGHWAY SPEED (60 TO 70 MPH). THIS STARTED AFTER ROUGHLY 2800 MILES (6 WEEKS OF OWNERSHIP). THIS CAUSES A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND FEELING THAT DRIVER WILL LOSE CONTROL OF VEHICLE. THIS HAS HAPPENED 4 TIMES IN LAST SIX DAYS. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER WHO SAYS THEY CANNOT FIND PROBLEM OR RECREATE THIS LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. AFTER HITTING BUMP YESTERDAY THE ONLY THING THAT STOPPED BACK AND FORTH SHAKING WAS TO PULL TO SIDE OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. THIS SITUATION IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. WHILE THIS LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND SHAKING DOES NOT OCCUR AT SLOWER SPEEDS (YET), I BELIEVE THIS VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE A SERIOUS CRASH IF IT CANNOT BE FIXED.

  13. Steering, Oct 13, 2018

WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION THE STEERING IS VERY LOOSE. YOU CAN MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT ABOUT 4 INCHES IN PLAY AND THE WHEELS NEVER TURN AT ALL. THIS MAKES DRIFTING, ESPECIALLY AT HIGH SPEEDS, A HUGE SAFETY RISK. YOU MUST OVERCORRECT THE WHEEL IN ORDER TO STAY IN YOUR LANE WHILE DRIVING. THE CASTER NUT AND GEAR BOX NUT SEEM TO COME FROM THE FACTORY EXTREMELY LOOSE CAUSING THIS POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING SAFETY HAZARD.

  14. Steering, Oct 13, 2018

AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OVER 70MPH, THE STEERING BECOMES VAGUE TO THE POINT OF A LOSS OF FINE CONTROL. WITHOUT STEERING INPUT AND WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT CROSS WINDS, THE FRONT WHEELS WILL STEER QUICKLY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND BACK. THE CHANGE IN DIRECTION IS SO DRASTIC THAT ONSTANT AND CAREFUL ATTENTION IS REQUIRED TO AVOID UNEXPECTED LANE CHANGES. I'VE OWNED TWO OTHER WRANGLERS (2000 AND 2007) AND THIS IS NOT A CONDITION BASED ON STEERING GEOMETRY OR 4WD SYSTEMS. THIS IS A LIFE-THREATENINGLY DANGEROUS CONDITION AND REQUIRES IMMEDIATE GOVERNMENT OVERSIGHT AND INTERDICTION.

  15. Steering, Oct 12, 2018

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V675000 (STEERING); HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. WESTBURY JEEP CHRYSLER DODGE RAM (100 JERICHO TURNPIKE, JERICHO, NY 11753, (516) 336-4784) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE RECALL AND STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH CASE NUMBER: 57197558. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

  16. Steering, Oct 12, 2018

MY VIN IS LISTED UNDER UA5 RECALL ABOUT THE TRACK BAR WELDS. I FEEL VERY UNCOMFORTABLE ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY THE WELDS ARE WEAK OR NOT DONE PROPERLY AND POSSIBLY BREAK OFF. I HAVE NOT HEARD BACK FROM JEEP/CHRYSLER/FCA AT ALL. AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALERSHIP, THEY HAD NOT IDEA THIS WAS AN ISSUE. I'M NOT CONCERNED ABOUT THE STEERING WHEEL FEELING 'LOOSE' AS OTHERS SAY. THE PLAY DOESN'T BOTHER ME. BUT THE WELD ISSUE IS A CONCERN. I LOOKED AT THEM VISUALLY BUT I'M NO EXPERT. WHILE THEY DON'T LOOK CLEAN I DON'T KNOW IF THEY'RE STRUCTURALLY SOUND.

  17. Steering, Oct 11, 2018

MY WELDS TO THE TRACK BAR ARE A MAJOR CONCERN TO ME AND MY FAMILY. THEY DON'T LOOK TO BE COMPLIANT AND I'M CONCERNED THAT THEY MAY BREAK. THERE'S A RECALL AND MY VIN DOESN'T SEEM TO BE IN THE CURRENT RECALL BUT THEY LOOK WORSE THAN ONES THAT ARE CURRENTLY IN THE RECALL LIST. PLEASE SEE ATTACHMENTS.

  18. Steering, Oct 11, 2018

THE STEERING IS HORRENDOUS! IT'S ALL OVER THE ROAD! WANDERS AND FEELS VERY LOOSE. WHEN DRIVING IT TAKES TOTAL CONCENTRATION TO STAY IN THE LANE. NON STOP CORRECTING.SOMETHING HAS TO BE CORRECTED NOTICED IT FROM DAY 1 . IT HAS ONLY 600 MILES ON IT SO FAR AND I AM SCARED TO DRIVE IT! GOING TO THE DEALER 10/15

  19. Steering, Structure, Oct 10, 2018

GOT A RECALL NOTICE (UA5) FOR A BRAND NEW 2018 JEEP WRANGLER JL REGARDING POSSIBLE BAD FRAME WELDS. DEALERSHIPS DO NOT HAVE INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT HOW TO INSPECT THE WELDS OR WHAT TO DO IF AN ISSUE IS FOUND. NO CLEAR WAY TO DETERMINE IF THE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE WITHOUT AN INSPECTION THAT THE DEALERSHIPS DON'T SEEM CAPABLE OF PERFORMING.

  20. Steering, Oct 9, 2018

VEHICLE IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP ON THE ROAD. STEERING HAS SO MUCH PLAY I HAVE ALMOST STRUCK THE GUARD RAILS AND/OR OTHER ADJACENT VEHICLES. ESPECIALLY ACUTE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. FCA HAS REFUSED TO ADMIT A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE EXISTS DESPITE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ON BLOGS AND ONLINE FORUMS. THERE IS 1 - 2 INCHES OR MORE OF PLAY IN STEERING THAT REQUIRES FATIGUING ATTENTION WHILE DRIVING TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN ITS LANE. SHOCKING FCA HAS NOT HAD A RECALL DESPITE ONLINE POSTS WITH FIXES / ADJUSTMENTS TO THE STEERING BOX THAT HAVE SOLVED THE ISSUE. DEALERS REFUSE TO MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT BECAUSE IT I NOT AUTHORIZED BY FCA. PLEASE GET INVOLVED BEFORE SERIOUS ACCIDENTS OCCUR. I JUST SAW A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR STEERING ON THIS MODEL DUE TO POOR FACTORY WELDS TO THE TRACK BAR. THIS IS A SEPARATE BUT STILL SERIOUS SAFETY CONTROL ISSUE. THIS HAPPENS (NOTICEABLE) TRAVELING ABOVE 30 MILES PER HOUR. FCA IS IN DENIAL -HELP!!! THEY WILL NOT MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT AT THE DEALER.

  21. Steering, Oct 8, 2018

AFTER PURCHASING MY JEEP RUBICON I NOTICE THAT THE VEHICLE STEERING WANDERED ON THE HIGHWAY. I WAS NOT ABLE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE STRAIGHT WITHOUT IT WANDERING FROM SIDE TO SIDE. TO MUCH PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. I HAD LESS THAN 100 MILES. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE JEEP DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT INSPECTED. THE JEEP WAS INSPECTED AND I WAS TOLD THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM WITH IT, HOWEVER I DID SOME RESEARCH AND SOON LEARNED THAT OTHERS HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING THE THE SAME PROBLEM. TO FIX IT ONE OWNER TOOK HIS IN TO HIS DEALER AND THEY MADE AN ADJUSTMENT IN THE STEERING TO A ( -8 ) AND IT WENT AWAY, BUT IT MADE HIS STEERING HARDER TO TURN.

  22. Steering, Suspension, Oct 8, 2018

I HAVE NOT HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE FAULTY TRACK BAR WELD AS OF YET, BUT I AM ABSOLUTELY NOT DRIVING UNTIL A FIX/REPLACEMENT HAS OCCURRED. I HAVE 3 CHILDREN AND I HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THEIR SAFETY AND MINE. I CANNOT IMAGINE HOW THIS PROBLEM CAN BE SATISFACTORILY FIXED. OBVIOUSLY CANNOT PUT A BAND AID ON IT

  23. Steering, Oct 7, 2018

FROM THE DAY I PICKED IT UP STEERING IS DANGEROUSLY LOOSE AT SPEEDS ABOVE 45 MPH. ON WINDING BACKROADS YOU HAVE TO STRUGGLE CONSTANTLY TO KEEP IN YOUR LANE. PEOPLE WILL DIE FROM THIS, IT IS THAT LOOSE. MY WIFE REFUSES TO DRIVE IT AFTER ONE TRIP. I CONTACTED JEEP AND THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS A TSB FOR MY JEEP. THE DEALERSHIP SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG AND WHEN I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE TSB THEY CLAIMED THEY DID IT. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN THE STEERING. I JUST REACHED 2000 MILES. I CAN'T AFFORD TO JUST GET RID OF IT.

  24. Steering, Oct 7, 2018

STEERING VERY HARD TO CONTROL AND KEEP STRAY... EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL CONTINOUSLY STEERING FROM 10-2 POSITION TO KEEP STRAIGHT... JERLS OFF TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER RANDOMLY... VERY UNSTABLE AND UNSAFE

  25. Steering, Oct 7, 2018

THE STEERING IS NOT RESPONSIVE AND HAS ABOUT A 1-2 INCH DEAD SPOT OF WIGGLE GAB BEFORE THE STEERING CAN RESPOND TO YOUR DRIVING
