Recalls and investigations

  1. Back over prevention, sensing system, cameraSep 12, 2024

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2024 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. The wiring harness for the rearview camera and the center brake light may short circuit, which can disable the rearview camera image and center brake light. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 111, "Rear Visibility" and 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a center brake light that fails to illuminate can fail to indicate to other drivers that the vehicle is slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers replaced the harness for the center brake light and rearview camera and/or the spare tire carrier/harness assembly, as necessary, free of charge. All vehicles were repaired by January 15, 2024. Owner notification letters were mailed September 26, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. WINDSHIELD ON JEEP WRANGLER 2018 AND NEWER JL MODELS ARE WEAKER THAN EXPECTED. I'VE HAD 2 CRACKS IN THE WINDSHIELD IN LESS THAN 5K MILES. OTHER OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING SIMILAR ISSUES, SOME AS QUICKLY AS LEAVING THE DEALER LOT. THE FRONT DEFROSTER MAY BE CAUSING ISSUES WHICH WEAKEN THE GLASS. THE IMAGES BELOW SHOW ONE OF MY CRACKS. THE SECTION FROM THE DRIVER SIDE WIPER TO PASSENGER SIDE FRACTURED IN ONE SHOT WITH AN AUDIBLE CRACK. THIS WAS AFTER THE DEFROST WAS TURNED ON. 2. Suspension, Mar 5, 2019

WHEN TRAVELING AROUND 65 MPH, WHENEVER I HIT A POTHOLE OR BRIDGE EXPANSION JOINT THE FRONT END OF MY 2018 WRANGLER JLU STARTS TO SHIMMY. ON THE INTERNET IT'S GIVEN THE NICKNAME OF "DEATH RATTLE". THE SHIMMY/VIBRATION LASTS FROM 5 TO 10 SECONDS AND SOMETIMES REQUIRES SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE IT STOP.

  3. Steering, Mar 5, 2019

THE STEERING WHEEL IS SHAKING VIOLENTLY AT HIGH SPEEDS AT UNEVEN SURFACES AFTER THE REPLACEMENT OF THE STEERING DUMPER AND THE SOFTWARE UPDATE STILL THE CAR HAS THE SAME PROBLEM.REALLY HARD TO KEEP IT STRAIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY,EXCESS PLAY ON THE STEERING WHEEL.NOT SAFE AT ALL

  4. Steering, Suspension, Mar 4, 2019

JEEP ATTEMPTED A SECOND FIX OF THE DEATH WOBBLE PROBLEM. BY CHANGING OUT THE DAMPENERS AND EXTENDING SOME ROD. WELL IT DID HELP WITH THE DEATH WOBBLE, IF YOU HIT CERTAIN BUMPS JUST RIGHT WITH THE WHEEL TURN, IT STILL FEELS LIKE THERE'S A SLIGHT WOBBLE, THAT IS QUICKLY CORRECTED . AFTER THIS SECOND FIX. MY JEEP NO LONGER RIDES LIKE IT USED TO. I FIND MYSELF DRIFTING MORE EASILY AND THE STEERING NOT AS IT WAS BEFORE

  5. Electrical system, Mar 4, 2019

BATTERY GROUND CABLE SPARKS WHEN REMOVED NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU WAIT. BATTERY CHARGE DECREASED TO 60 % CHARGE BEFORE DISCONNECTED. VEHICLE IS STATIONARY IN MY GARAGE. VEHICLE HAS FIFTEEN RELAYS UNDER HOOD MANY OF WHICH ARE ALWAYS IN ON STATE. AM INSTALLING 180 AMP RELAY TO ISOLATE BATTERY. THIS VEHICLE IS HAZARD TO FIREMEN. MOST RELAYS DRAW 1.4 AMPS IN ON STATE.

  6. Steering, Mar 3, 2019

WHEN TRAVELING AT SPEEDS ABOVE 60 MPH AND A BUMP IS HIT OR A BRIDGE IS CROSSED, THE STEERING WHEEL, FRONT TIRES, AND FRONT OF THE TRUCK VIBRATES VIOLENTLY. TWO STEERING DAMPERS HAVE BEEN PUT ON THE JEEP WHICH REDUCES THE SHAKING FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME BEFORE IT RETURNS.

  7. Steering, Suspension, Mar 3, 2019

DEATH WOBBLE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN TWICE TO GET FIXED. ONCE FOR A MONTH. NOW WE HAVE LESS THAN 4000 MILES ON IT AND IT IS STILL THERE. WE HAVE A HORRIFYING VIDEO ALSO.

  8. Steering, Suspension, Structure, Mar 3, 2019

I HAVE A JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED JL SPORT PURCHASED IN JUNE OF 2018. JUST RECENTLY EVERY TIME I GET ABOVE 60-65 MPH I GET A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF VIBRATION ALSO KNOWN AS 'DEATH WOBBLE' THIS IS HAPPENING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND CAN START EVEN IF I DONT HIT A BUMP OR POTHOLE. THE ONLY WAY TO GET OUT OF IT IS TO BRAKE HARD TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN TO STOP IT. HAS POSSED A SAFETY HAZARD TO ME BECAUSE IT MAKES ME LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AS I CANT TURN OUT TO MOVE MY VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE DEATH WOBBLE IS CAUSED BY A COMBINATION OF ITEMS AND THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED TO SEE WETHER A SAFETY NOTICE IS NEEDED.

  9. Other or unspecified, Feb 28, 2019

THERE'S ABOUT A HALF SECOND DELAY IN THE HORN WHEN PRESSING THE CENTER OF THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS COULD BE A SAFETY CONCERN IF YOU'RE TRYING TO WARN AN UNATTENTIVE MOTORIST IN A POTENTIAL COLLISION.

  10. Steering, Feb 27, 2019

STEERING WHEEL HAS EXCESS PLAY, WANDERS AROUND THE HIGHWAY WENT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY IN TURNS.

  11. Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Feb 27, 2019

CURRENTLY I HAVE TWO ISSUES I BELIEVE MY 2018 WRANGLER JL TO BE EXPERIENCING. THE FIRST IS A CONSTANT CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE VEHICLE, MAINLY IN THE REAR. THIS OCCURS AT SLOW SPEEDS (10MPH OR LESS). THE DEALER REPLACED MY REAR AXLE BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE SECOND ISSUE IS THAT I DO NOT BELIEVE I AM ABLE TO FILL MY FUEL TANK TO THE PROPER CAPACITY. ( HAVE A 4-DOOR JL) FROM 'LOW MILEAGE' WARNING TO FULL, TYPICALLY I GET ABOUT 16 GALLONS.

  12. Steering, Suspension, Feb 27, 2019

VEHICLE BECOMES VERY UNSETTLED WHEN CROSSING PAVEMENT JOINTS AND BRIDGE TRANSITIONS ON HIGHWAYS AT SPEED THE VEHICLE STARTS FRONT END DEATH WOBBLE

  13. Steering, Suspension, Wheels, Feb 27, 2019

AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (60-80MPH) THE VEHICLE SHAKES VIOLENTLY AFTER GOING OVER A BUMP OR DEFORMITY IN THE ROAD. HAS OCCURRED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. EVERYTHING SHAKES NOT JUST THE STEERING WHEEL. LASTS UNTIL VEHICLE SPEED REDUCES.

  14. Steering, Feb 27, 2019

WHEN HITTING A POTHOLE, BRIDGE CONNECTION, OR OTHER LARGE BUMP AT SPEEDS OF 60+ MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL AND VEHICLE SHAKE VIOLENTLY. THIS REQUIRES A DRASTIC REDUCTION OF SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY, ALONG WITH TIGHT CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL. THE SPEED REDUCTION IS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS TO YOU AND OTHER VEHICLES NEAR YOU, LET ALONE THE VIOLENT SHAKING OF THE VEHICLE CAUSING POTENTIAL MECHANICAL PROBLEMS AND HUMAN ERROR. QUICK FIX AT JEEP DEALERSHIP REPLACING STABILIZER ACTS AS A BAND AID WITHOUT ANY ACTUAL SOLUTION TO THE ISSUE.

  15. Steering, Suspension, Feb 27, 2019

AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, 3 TIMES NOW THE STEERING WHEEL BEGINS TO SHAKE QUITE VIOLENTLY AND IMPEDED ONE'S ABILITY TO CONTROL THE CAR. THIS CONDITION APPEARS TO LAST UNTIL SPEED IS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED. THE JEEP WRANGLER 4 DOOR IS A 2018 WITH LESS THAN 6K MILES.

  16. Steering, Suspension, Feb 26, 2019

VEHICLE PURCHASED NEW FROM DEALERSHIP. WITHIN FIRST 100 MILES WAS TRAVELING DOWN HWY AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MILES PER HOUR, I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD WHILE BEARING LEFT. TRUCK STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY. STEERING WHEEL SAME. AS TRUCK SLOWED DOWN SHAKING STOPPED... DEALER REPLACED STABILITY BAR AND STATED PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED... WITHIN FIRST WEEK OF TRUCK BEING RETURNED, I WAS TRAVELING ON HWY, THIS TIME HIT A BUMP IN ROAD WHILE BEARING RIGHT. TRUCK STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY TO THE POINT I BARELY AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT WITH A VEHICLE TO MY FRONT AND ANOTHER TO MY SIDE... VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO DEALERSHIP, THIS TIME SPOKE WITH GENERAL MANAGER, WAS TOLD AS OF YET THEIR IS NO SOLUTION. CORPORATE WILL HAVE TO RECOMMEND A FIX. I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE FOR APPROX 1 MONTH AND 2 WEEKS. IT'S BEEN IN DEALERS POSSESSION FOR THIS AND NUMEROUS OTHER PROBLEMS FOR MORE THAN HALF THAT TIME. AT TIME OF FIRST REPAIR I ASKED DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR PAPERWORK, WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT READY, IT WOULD BE MAILED TO ME. AT TIME OF SECOND I AM STILL AWAITING DOCUMENTATION FROM FIRST INCIDENT WHICH HAS STILL NOT BEEN PROVIDED. FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED 1/24/19. DEALER KEPT VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 20 DAYS. SECOND INCIDENT OCCURRED MORNING OF 2/26/19 AS OF THIS WRITING.

  17. Steering, Other or unspecified, Feb 26, 2019

MY JEEP IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE JEEP WILL ONLY DRIVE OK IF YOU DRIVE ON A L NEWLY PAVED AND TOTALLY FLAT SURFACE. - WHEN YOU HIT A BUMP THERE IS AN EXTENDED VIBRATION, QUESTIONABLE HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS AND THE CAR LITERALLY JUMPS LANE AND MOVES SIDE TO SIDE WITHOUT HAVING ANY CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE. IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME I DRIVE AND REPEATEDLY EACH TIME I DRIVE. THE JEEP ALSO HAS THE JEEP DEATH WOBBLE - THE CRAZY VIBRATION OF THE WHOLE CAR. BOTH ISSUES ARE WORSE AT HIGHER SPEEDS BUT WHEN IT HAPPENS YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OVER THE CAR.. THE FRONT END VIBRATIONS TRANSITION INTO THE VEHICLE JUMPING LANES AND MOVEMENT THAT VARIES IN SEVERITY DUE TO SPEEDS. IT IS VERY SCARY AND VERY DANGEROUS. I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND CHRYSLER'S SPECIAL REGIONAL TECH HAVE CONFIRMED THIS ISSUE. IT HAPPENS WHILE IN MOTION, ON ANY STREET, AT ANY SPEED, WHETHER DRIVING STRAIGHT OR TURNING - IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, AT ANY MOMENT WITH NO NOTICE. IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY YOU DRIVE THE CAR SO HARD BUT I PUT IN TODAYS DATE BC YOU ASKED FOR A DATE. IT DID HAPPEN TODAY FOR CHRYSLERS SPECIAL REGIONAL TECH TOO. IT ALSO HAPPENS AT ALL SPEEDS BUT IS WORSE AT HIGHER SPEEDS.

  18. Steering, Feb 26, 2019

MY CAR IS SHAKING NON STOP AFTER I HIT A BUMP ON THE ROAD, IT CAN LAST UP TO 1 1/2MINUTE NON STOP. TOOK INTO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD AFTER 1 WK THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. I HAVE UNDER 5,000 MILES ON MY CAR.

  19. Visibility/wiper, Feb 26, 2019

HOW'S IT GOING. I ENTERED MY CAR IN THE PARKING LOT OF MY WORK AND TURNED THE JEEP ON. WITHIN A MINUTE WHILE SITTING THERE I HEARD LIKE A POP AND A CRACK AND I NOTICED A SMALL CRACK ABOUT 5-6' IN LENGTH. IT STARTED AT THE BOTTOM OF MY DRIVER WIDE WINDOW AND RAN VERTICAL. OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT WEEK THIS SMALL CRACK TURNED LEFT AND RIGHT AND ENDED UP ENGULFING MY WHOLE WINDSHIELD. I AM PART OF JLWRANGLERFORUMS.COM AND I HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO NUMEROUS VEHICLES. BETWEEN THE PHANTOM CRACKS SHOWING UP AND OTHERS GETTING HUGE CRACKS FROM ROCK CHIPS SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH THIS WINDSHIELD. I OWNED A WRANGLER TJ FOR OVER 4 YEARS AND NEVER ONCE HAD A WINDSHIELD PROBLEM. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT. THANK YOU (XXX). 21. Steering, Feb 26, 2019

WHEN DRIVING THE STEERING HAS PLAY AND MUST CONSTANTLY CORRECT TO KEEP CAR GOING STRAIGHT. DRIFTS AND WANDERS, THIS IS NOT A FOLLOWING THE CROWN ISSUE. VERY NOTICEABLE AT LOCAL SPEEDS (20-40 MPH) AND DRIVING CONSTANTLY ON A STRAIGHT ROAD

  22. Visibility/wiper, Feb 25, 2019

WINDSHIELD CRACKED IN CENTER WHILE RUNNING DEFROSTER. 2000 MILES ON ODOMETER, NO ROCK STRIKES. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY ON A VERY COLD DAY.

JEEP WONDERS WHEN ON THE HIGHWAY. FEEL LIKE I NEED TO ALWAYS HANG ON WITH 2 HANDS

  24. Steering, Feb 23, 2019

LOOSE STEERING, CAUSES OVER CORRECTION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. SUSPECT THE LACK OF RIGIDITY IN THE RUBBER BUSHINGS TO BE TOO SOFT, CAUSING A HALF INCH DEAD SPOT IN THE STEERING BEFORE THE WHEELS ADJUST TO THE STEERING WHEEL INPUT.

  25. Suspension, Feb 22, 2019

I HAVE ALREADY FILED ONE COMPLAINT ON THIS AND HEARD NOTHING. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I HAVE HAD MY 2018 WRANGLER INTO THE SHOP FOR REPAIR FOR THE SAME ISSUE OF THE "DEATH WOBBLE" (WHEN HITTING A BUMP ON THE HIGHWAY IT GOES INTO A TERRIBLE WOBBLE YOU MUST SLOW WAY DOWN FOR). NO RECALL AND STILL HAVING PROBLEMS. THE LAST TIME IT WAS IN THE SHOP RECENTLY IT WAS IN THERE FOR 4 WEEKS. THIS IS RICICULOUS!
