Recalls and investigations

  1. Back over prevention, sensing system, cameraSep 12, 2024

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2024 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. The wiring harness for the rearview camera and the center brake light may short circuit, which can disable the rearview camera image and center brake light. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 111, "Rear Visibility" and 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a center brake light that fails to illuminate can fail to indicate to other drivers that the vehicle is slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers replaced the harness for the center brake light and rearview camera and/or the spare tire carrier/harness assembly, as necessary, free of charge. All vehicles were repaired by January 15, 2024. Owner notification letters were mailed September 26, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. 2. Steering, Sep 27, 2018, crash

THE JEEP IS UNCONTROLLABLE AT HIGH SPEEDS AND THE STEERING IS HIGHLY FLAWED. WE WERE NOT TOLD WHEN WE PICKED UP THE VEHICLE TWO WEEKS AGO THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING. THERE IS EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE WHEEL SO THERE IS ABOUT 10 DEGREES OF TURN WHERE THE STEERING IS NOT AFFECTED. THE VEHICLE BASICALLY BOUNCES BACK AND FORTH IN THE LANE AND IT IS HARD TO CONTROL. THE FASTER, THE MORE DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. WHEN OUR SON WAS TRYING TO MERGE ONTO A HIGHWAY HE SAID IT BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE AND HE THE JEEP STARTED OSCILLATING BACK AND FORTH UNTIL HE LOST CONTROL. THE JEEP SPUN OUT AND LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT. THE VEHICLE CANNOT DRIVE IN A STRAIGHT LINE, TAKES EXCESSIVE INPUT TO CONTROL, AND IS UNSAFE FOR LOW TIME DRIVERS. WE HAVE TAKEN THE JEEP BACK FOUR TIMES AND THE DEALERSHIP NOW HAS POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE WITH NO FIX AVAILABLE. THEY HAVE NOT ADMITTED NOR DENIED THERE IS A SAFETY PROBLEM OTHER THAN SAYING THEY ARE WORKING WITH FCA REPS TO FIND A SOLUTION. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD NOT BE ON US HIGHWAYS. THIS IS AN UNSAFE VEHICLE AND THERE IS SIGNIFICANT RISK TO LIFE AND PROPERTY. THESE VEHICLES ARE BEING DELIVERED WITH A FLAWED STEERING SYSTEM THAT HAS EXCESSIVE PLAY WHICH INVITES LOSS OF CONTROL AT HIGH SPEEDS. PLEASE IMMEDIATELY TAKE THESE VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD. JEEP SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SELL THEM AS THEY ARE TOTALLY UNSAFE. THE JEEP JL WRANGLER (2018) IS UNSAFE!

  3. Steering, Sep 26, 2018

STEERING HAS EXCESSIVE FREE PLAY ON CENTER. THE STEERING WHEEL MOVES 1" IS EACH DIRECTION BEFORE WHEELS RESPOND. IT IF VERY DIFFICULT TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN THE LANE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE HAS 1,100 MILES ON IT. THE STEERING WAS THIS WAY FROM NEW. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER ON 9/24 TO BE REPAIRED. DEALER SAID IT IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. MANY 2018 JEEP WRANGLER JL OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE ON THE INTERNET FORUMS.

  4. Steering, Sep 26, 2018

STEERING CONTROL BECAME SIGNIFICANTLY IMPAIRED & DIFFICULT TO CORRECT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS / MODERATE RIGHT HAND CURVE / MINOR PAVEMENT IMPERFECTIONS, WHICH ALMOST RESULTED IN MULTI-VEHICLE ACCIDENT. OVERALL, VEHICLE CONTROL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IS VERY POOR. STEERING WHEEL HAS A DEAD SPOT, AND HIGHWAY WONDER CAN BE SIGNIFICANT. WITH NO STEERING WHEEL MOVEMENT THE VEHICLE'S TRAJECTORY CAN CHANGE, WHICH REQUIRES CONTINUOUS CORRECTIONS.

THERE IS EXCESSIVE PLAY (ABOUT 2 INCHES) IN THE STEERING. THIS LEADS TO ME HAVING TO CONSTANTLY CORRECT FOR IT WANDERING. I FEEL THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS ON THE HIGHWAY ESPECIALLY.

WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN AT LOW SPEEDS IT SEEMINGLY FELT LIKE MY POWER STEERING WAS DISABLED AND I HAD TO CRANK MY WHEEL IN ORDER TO MAKE THE TURN. A FEW HOURS LATER, I GET HOME AND ABOUT 100 YARDS FROM MY APARTMENT, THE 'SERVICE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL ' WARNING POPS UP. I HAVE ONLY HAD THIS VEHICLE 2 DAYS AND LESS THAN 300 MILES. IT'S SAFE TO SAY, I'M EXTREMELY UNHAPPY WITH THIS VEHICLE.

VEHICLE STEERING WONDERS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS REQUIRING CONSTANT STEERING CONTROL FROM OPERATOR. AS SPEED INCREASES TO INTERSTATE LEGAL SPEED LIMITS VEHICLE STEERS ON ITS OWN REPEATEDLY LEFT TO RIGHT BACK TO LEFT VIOLENTLY REQUIRING OPERATOR TO REDUCE SPEED TO REGAIN CONTROL OF VEHICLE. IF OPERATOR VIEW MOMENTARILY LOOKS AT DASH CONTROLS THE VEHICLE WONDERS INTO LANE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. PERIODS OF HIGH WINDS INCREASES SEVERITY OF VEHICLE WONDERING TO HIGHER LEVELS OF DANGEROUS DRIVING. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW AND VEHICLE STEERING WONDERING HAS HAPPENED DURING EVERY DRIVING EXPERIENCE ON STATE AND FEDERAL HIGH WAYS. CURRENTLY THIS VEHICLE HAS 1071.0 MILES ON ODOMETER.

  11. Steering, Sep 17, 2018

WHEN DRIVING AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 45MPH, THERE IS SIGNIFICANT PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE IS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL IN A STRAIGHT LINE. THIS IS DANGEROUS. BECAUSE OF THE PLAY, YOU HAVE TO CONSTANTLY MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT LEFT OR RIGHT TO FIND WHERE THE POINT IS THAT IMPACTS THE DIRECTION OF THE VEHICLE. THIS NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION BECAUSE FCA IS IGNORING THE ISSUE. I HAVE VISITED TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS TO LOOK FOR A SOLUTION AND ALSO SPOKEN THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT FCA. THE DEALERS' INSPECTIONS DID NOT DISCOVER ANY MECHANICAL ISSUE. IN SPEAKING TO FCA AND THE TECHNICIANS AT THE DEALERSHIPS, THEY INDICATED THAT IT IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE, BUT CANNOT DO ANYTHING UNTIL FCA DIRECTS THEM. SOME OWNERS OF THE WRANGLER HAVE COERCED THEIR DEALERSHIP TO FLASH THE POWER TRAIN CONTROL MODULE. ACCORDING TO THOSE INDIVIDUALS THIS SOFTWARE UPDATE HAS SOLVED THE ISSUE. BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND A DEALER TO DO THIS WITHOUT FCA DIRECTION.

OCCURRED ON MULTIPLE DATES BEGINNING TWO WEEKS AFTER DELIVERY OF THE VEHICLE: 8/6/2018, 8/30/2018 AND 9/5/2018. MULTIPLE MALFUNCTIONS OF ILLUMINATED RED (AIR BAG WARNING, BRAKE WARNING, BATTERY CHANGE, COOLANT TEMPERATURE, ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL, OIL AND SEAT BELT) AND YELLOW DASH WARNING LIGHTS (ANTI LOCK BRAKES, ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL, LOW FUEL, CHECK ENGINE, TPMS, FRONT AND REAR AXLE LOCK, 4WD INDICATOR AND SWAY BAR INDICATOR) AND AUDIBLE WARNING CHIMES. ADDITIONAL WARNINGS OF "HOT OIL" AND INITIATION OF THE AUXILIARY COOLING FAN ON THE ENGINE. THIS HAPPENS UNDER ROUTINE DRIVING CONDITIONS ON URBAN PAVED STREETS WITH SPEEDS NORMAL AT 40 MPH AND NOT GREATER THAN 55 MPH, WITH CLEAR SUNNY WEATHER AND TEMPERATURE IN THE MID-80S. DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE (TIPM). THE TIPM WAS DESCRIBED TO US AS A "SMART" FUSE BOX WITH DIODES THAT ARE OPEN OR CLOSED SUPPLY POWER TO VARIOUS SYSTEMS OR ACTING AS GROUNDS OR RELAYS, SOME OF WHICH IMPACT KEY SAFETY SYSTEMS ON THE VEHICLE. MULTIPLE EFFORTS TO REPAIR HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL MAKING THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO OPERATE IN ACCORDANCE WITH INFORMATION IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND TECHNICIANS FROM CHRYSLER HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE SINCE 9/5/2018 AND STATE THEY ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY IDENTIFYING THE CAUSE AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO REPAIR IT. CONFIDENCE IN THE SAFE OPERATION OF THIS VEHICLE IS LOW. AWAITING FURTHER FROM SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND COLLECTION OF REPAIR ORDERS AND RELATED DOCUMENTS. *DT CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT FULL TIME SINCE SEPTEMBER 5,2018 FOR THE SAME ISSUE(S). THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED A TOTAL COMPUTER FAILURE WHILE IT WAS BEING DRIVEN. MY FIANCE' WAS DRIVING THIS TIME AND LOST POWER STEERING, BRAKE ASSIST, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO SHIFT GEARS OR EVEN TURN OFF THE ENGINE. AS BEFORE, INDICATIONS ARE A COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE CAN NETWORK - MULTIPLE CELS AND ERROR MESSAGES, FROM FUEL LOW TO TPMS FAIL TO ELECTRONIC START STOP DISABLED TO CHECK SHIFTIER, AS WELL AS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND THE ENGINE GOING INTO LIMP MODE. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED I WAS DOING 70MPH ON THE FREEWAY. IT OCCURRED AT NIGHT, THANKFULLY, AS IT CAUSED ME TO SWERVE BETWEEN LANES DURING THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER/STEERING ASSIST. IF IT HAD BEEN DURING RUSH HOUR, I WOULD HAVE HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS TIME THE COMPUTER FAILED WHILE IN A PARKING GARAGE. THANKFULLY IT OCCURRED AFTER TURNING INTO A STRAIGHT AWAY AS MY FIANCE' TOOK THE ENTIRE LENGTH TO STOP DUE TO THE LOSS OF BREAKING; SHE BLEW THROUGH A PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY AND COULD NOT STOP AND, IF IT HAD HAPPENED DURING A TURN, SHE MOST LIKELY WOULD HAVE HIT A CAR OR HIT THE EDGE OF THE PARKING GARAGE. BOTH TIMES WE WERE VERY LUCKY THAT WE DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT THAT RESULTED IN MAJOR DAMAGE OR A FATALITY. JEEP HAS FOUND 2 ELECTRICAL WIRING PROBLEMS SO FAR WITH THIS JEEP AND OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE ADDITIONAL WIRING DEFECTS PRESENT IN THE VEHICLE.

  19. Steering, Sep 12, 2018

I JUST LEASED A JEEP AN IMMEDIATELY UPON DRIVING THE JEEP HOME I HAD PROBLEMS STEERING THE VEHICLE AS I ENTERED NORMAL TRAFFIC SPEED. THERE IS A NOTICEABLE STEERING DEAD ZONE (PLAY) WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS AT-OR-NEAR CENTERED POSITION. FURTHERMORE, THE VEHICLE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE IN A STRAIGHT LINE (THE JEEP WANDERS QUITE MARKEDLY ON PAVED ROADS WITHOUT CONSTANT CORRECTION. ) SEVERAL TIMES I WENT OUT OF MY LANE. THESE TWO ISSUES ARE PRESENT AT ALL SPEEDS BUT ARE ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. BOTH ISSUES COMPOUND AND MAKE THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE REQUIRING FREQUENT MICRO-CORRECTIONS WHICH ARE HARD TO GET RIGHT BECAUSE OF THE AFOREMENTIONED DEAD ZONE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING WRANGLER FOR 10 YEARS SO THIS IS NOT BECAUSE I AM NEW TO THE VEHICLE . IF I DRIVE THIS JEEP I WILL HAVE AN ACCIDENT, ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME THERE IS ALSO HALF INCH TO FULL INCH OF PLAY WITH THE STEERING WHEEL IN PARK. THE STEERING WHEEL CAN BE MOVED WITH NO MOVEMENT IN THE TIRES

  22. Steering, Sep 11, 2018

STEERING IS LOOSE AND 1 INCH MOVEMENTS OF THE STEERING WHEEL IN EITHER DIRECTION YIELD NO STEERING EFFECT AT ALL. CAR WANDERS IN LEFT AND RIGHT AND THE "DEAD" ZONE IN THE STEERING WHEEL MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. OTHER DRIVERS MUST THINK I AM DRIVING DRUNK. NOT SAFE OR COMFORTABLE.

  23. Steering, Sep 11, 2018

STEERING WHEEL AUTOMATICALLY GOES THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION WHILE IN GEAR 1 OR 2 WHEN IT IS TURNED HALF WAY. THIS HAPPENS UNDER PARKING CONDITIONS (DIFFICULT NOT TO HIT OTHER CARS); AND TURNING IN HIGH TRAFFIC SITUATIONS (VERY DANGEROUS IN CONGESTED AREAS). I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR STEERING (IT WAS GOING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION SUCH AS IN A SKIDDING SITUATION) ON THE HIGHWAY GETTING ON FROM AN ONRAMP (FROM FIRST GEAR TO SECOND - FROM A STOP SIGN) AND ALMOST STEERED INTO ONCOMING CARS!! I HAVE A VIDEO EXAMPLE OF THE PROBLEM THAT I CAN SEND VIA EMAIL IF YOU NEED.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH MY WIFE AT 60MPH THE STEERING GOT LOOSE TO THE POINT WHERE THE CAR WAS LOSING CONTROL I NEEDED TO PULL OFF THE HIGHWAY. THE 2018 WRANGLER JK HAS A NEW STEERING SYSTEM DESIGN THAT CREATES A DANGEROUSLY LOOSE AND OVERSTEER CONDITION THAT WILL INCREASE ROLLOVERS AT HIGH SPEEDS WE WOULD LIKE TO FORMALLY DOCUMENT THE STEERING ON THE JL IS FLAWED, DANGEROUS, AND DESIGNED AT A LEVEL OF LOOSENESS WHERE THE DRIVERS CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE IS DRAMATICALLY IMPAIRED. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE RECALLED AND OR THE ELECTRONIC SOFTWARE PACKAGE SHOULD BE REDESIGNED. WITH THIS EMAIL I AM NOTIFYING FCA THAT THEY HAVE A MATERIAL SAFETY HAZARD ON THIS PRODUCT. THE EXCESSIVE PLAY IN STEERING RISKS OVERSTEER AT LOW SPEEDS AND INCREASED ROLLOVER % PROBABILITY AT 55 MPH AND HIGHER THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. THE CHANGE IN TIRES MAKES NO DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMANCE. THIS IS DOCUMENTING COMPLAINT NUMBER 2 FROM THE [XXX] FAMILY. PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE WITHOUT A WARNING OR THE TEEN AGE DEMOGRAPHIC THAT LOVES TO DRIVE WRANGLERS.
