Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, ignition, anti-theft, immobilizer/proximity, key/senderFeb 16, 2023

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.

Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.

  2. Electrical system, wiring, interior/under dashJan 21, 2022

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Rogue vehicles. The electrical connector for the under dash harness may corrode due to water and salt intrusion from the driver's side foot well.

Corrosion in the electrical connector can result in power window/seat failure, all-wheel-drive warning light illumination, battery drainage, and electrical connector damage that increases the risk of a fire.

Dealers will remove the harness tape and harness covering and replace both connectors and apply white lithium grease to the connectors as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 23, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21B9.

  3. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationApr 26, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.

If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

  4. Structure, body, hatchback/liftgate, support device/strutApr 15, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Nissan Rogue vehicles manufactured July 31, 2013, to January 16, 2016. In the affected vehicles, the rear lift gate support stays may corrode due to insufficient anti-corrosion treatment.

Corrosion of one or both of the rear lift gate support stays could cause a sudden release of pressure. If this occurs, the support stays may break off, increasing the risk of injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear tailgate stays, free of charge. The recall began on November 18, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

If the fuel pump fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Owners were sent interim notices on May 9, 2016. The affected vehicles may experience an electrical short in the harness connector due to a mixture of snow/water and salt seeping through the carpet on the driver side floor near the harness connector.

An electrical short can cause a vehicle fire.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the kick panel wiring harness connector and will if necessary install a new harness connector and waterproof seal, free of charge. The recall began on February 26, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  8. Service brakesJan 14, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. During the assembly process, the front wheel hub assembly fasteners may not have been properly torqued.

The under-torqued fasteners may result in a brake caliper separating from the wheel assembly causing a reduction in braking performance or reduced steering control. These conditions increase the risk of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and tighten any loose bolts to the proper specification, free of charge. The recall began February 2, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

If the lug nut becomes loose from not being properly tightened, it may fall off, allowing the other lug nuts to become loose, possibly resulting in a wheel separation, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and tighten any loose lug nuts to the correct specification, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of June 2014. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

The incorrect bolts could loosen and fall out resulting in a loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners and, dealers will inspect and repair all affected vehicles, free of charge. The recall began on June 2, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

WHILE SITTING STILL, OUR VEHICLE WAS HIT HEAD ON BY ANOTHER CAR. ALTHOUGH THE OTHER CAR WAS NOT GOING FAST, THE IMPACT WAS NEAR MIDDLE OF THE FRONT OF THE CAR. JUST UNDER $4000 OF DAMAGE WAS DONE. BOTH THE AIR CONDENSER AND THE RADIATOR HAD TO BE REPLACED. NEITHER AIR BAG WAS INFLATED EVEN THOUGH MY WIFE AND I WERE BOTH IN THE FRONT SEAT. OUR SEAT BELTS WERE BEING USED. NEITHER OF US WAS INJURED. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE EXITING A PARKING LOT ONTO A ROAD. THE OTHER CAR TURNED INTO OUR LANE.

PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT REMAINS ON DESPITE ADULT PASSENGER WEIGHING BETWEEN 120-150 LBS IN PASSENGER SEAT. PROBLEM WAS PRESENT SINCE FIRST DAY PURCHASE OF VEHICLE BRAND NEW. BROUGHT BACK TO DEALER 5 TIMES AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH IT--THAT IT WAS FUNCTIONING TO MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATION. WAS TOLD ON FIRST TRIP BACK TO DEALER TO HAVE THE PASSENGER SIT TOWARD THE BACK RIGHT CORNER OF THE SEAT (REALLY?!?!?!? RIGHT BEFORE WE HAVE AN ACCIDENT?!?!?). SECOND TRIP TO DEALER WAS TOLD THAT AN EMPTY WATER BOTTLE UNDER THE SEAT WAS THE CAUSE (AGAIN, REALLY!!!!!??????). TOOK SEVERAL VIDEOS OF THE MALFUNCTION AND NISSAN STILL REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

  10. Air bags, Dec 8, 2015

THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DOESN'T SENSE ADULT PASSENGERS AND THE DEACTIVATED LIGHT IS LIT. NISSAN WON'T DO ANYTHING. I GUESS IT DOESN'T MATTER TO THEM UNTIL SOMEONE GETS KILLED.

  11. Air bags, Structure, Nov 8, 2015, crash

I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY DOING 60-70 MPH AT NIGHT AND A DEER JUMPED OUT OF NOWHERE STRAIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CAR HITTING THE HOOD WHICH OPENED UP PROTECTING THE WINDSHIELD AND ME INSIDE. THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED (ONLY ON MY SIDE, NOT PASSENGER'S) LEAVING 2ND DEGREE BURNS ON MY RIGHT HAND (AS ESTIMATED BY A DOCTOR AT THE HOSPITAL). I WAS GIVEN AN OINTMENT AND BANDAGE. THE CAR ITSELF IS TOTALED WITH THE FRONT COMPLETELY BENT (SEE ATTACHMENTS). MY ISSUE IS WHETHER THE AIR BAG IS SUPPOSED TO BE THAT HOT AS TO BURN. I CAN UNDERSTAND IT'D BE WARM ESPECIALLY AFTER DRIVING FOR A WHILE BUT HOT TO THE EXTREME? I'M NOT SURE IF I HAVE A STRONG CASE AS TO SUE THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE BURNS BUT IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO TO BE COMPENSATED FOR THIS BODILY INJURY AS WELL AS PAIN & SUFFERING? THANKS!

  12. Air bags, Nov 4, 2015

PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG LIGHTS HAS STAYED ON WITH FRONT SEAT PASSENGER IN VEHICLE. THIS HAS HAPPENED WITH VEHICLE BOTH STATIONARY AND IN MOTION. I HAD TO SHUT OFF VEHICLE AND RESTART TO HAVE AIRBAG LIGHT ON DASH GO OUT. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. TOOK PICTURE THE LAST TIME.

  13. Air bags, Oct 21, 2015

THE PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT, INFORMING THAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG IS OFF, REMAINS LIT EVEN IF AN ADULT OVER 100 LBS IS SITTING IN THE SEAT. PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT. HAPPENS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY OR IN MOVEMENT. THE LIGHT REMAINING ILLUMINATED MEANS THE AIRBAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE IT WAS TURNED OFF. WE BELIEVE A FAULTY SEAT SENSOR OR COMPUTER SYSTEM MAY BE AT FAULT. WE HAVE ONLY JUST NOTICED THAT THIS WAS HAPPENING WITH THE VEHICLE. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP, THEY ARE NOT SAYING IT IS A KNOWN FAULT AND BLAMING WEAR AND TEAR--THE JUST TURNED A YEAR OLD, HOWEVER WHEN YOU SEARCH THE INTERNET THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT COMPLAIN OF THIS ISSUE. THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THE 2014 NISSAN ROGUE FOR THIS ISSUE.

  14. Air bags, Seat belts, Seats, Jun 29, 2015

INTERMITTENT AND INCONSISTENT: WITH PASSENGER IN PASSENGER SEAT, THE AIRBAG OFF LIGHT IS ON. I HAVE HAD THE DEALER LOOK AT IT ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS AND THEY CANNOT FIND ANYTHING. PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITENTLY (AS IF PASSENGER IS NOT WEARING SEAT BELT, BUT REALLY IS. I BELIEVE THESE ARE SERIOUS ISSUES WITH THE SENSORS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT...

  15. Air bags, Jun 24, 2015

PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG LIGHT INDICATES AIRBAG IS OFF DESPITE THE FACT THAT THERE IS AN ADULT SITTING IN THE SEAT WEIGHING 125LB. AFTER TURNING CAR ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES LIGHT WILL EVENTUALLY STAY OFF INDICATING AIRBAG IS NOW ACTIVE.....UPDATED 08/12/15 *BF .

WHENEVER THE FRONT-SEAT PASSENGER BUCKLES HIS OR HER SEAT BELT EVEN A FEW SECONDS AFTER WE START OUR ROGUE, PUT IT IN GEAR, AND START DRIVING, THE "PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF" LIGHT ILLUMINATES AND THE PASSENGER AIRBAG REMAINS OFF INDEFINITELY. WE ARE ABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM ONLY BY STOPPING THE CAR, SHUTTING IT OFF, AND MAKING SURE THAT THE PASSENGER BUCKLES HIS OR HER SEAT BELT BEFORE THE ENGINE IS RE-STARTED. THIS IS CLEARLY A DANGEROUS PROBLEM. WE SPOKE TO OUR NISSAN DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT ABOUT THIS, AND THEY TOLD US THAT THEY ARE AWARE THAT THIS KIND OF THING HAPPENS, BUT THEY HAVE NO FIX FOR IT. *TR

  20. Air bags, Mar 23, 2015

WE WERE ON I-77 HEADING TO FLORIDA WHEN WE NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT WAS ON, INDICATING THAT THE AIR BAG WAS NOT FUNCTIONING. IT STAYED ON FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS UNTIL WE STOPPED TO EAT. WHEN WE STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND THE LIGHT WAS OFF. THEN APPROXIMATELY AND HOUR LATER THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND STAYED ON FOR ROUGHLY 30 MINUTES AND WENT OFF AGAIN. IT DID NOT COME ON AGAIN, BUT WE TOOK THE CAR TO DAYTONA NISSAN AND REPORTED OUR PROBLEM. THE SERVICE MANAGER THERE HAD THEM CHECK IT OUT AND THEN TOLD US THAT THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE SYSTEM. HE TOLD US THAT MY WIFE DID NOT WEIGH ENOUGH TO TRIP THE SENSOR. HER WEIGHT USUALLY VARIES BETWEEN 116 AND 122 POUNDS. BASED ON HIS STATEMENT, SHE COULD NEVER RIDE IN THE FRONT SEAT! THE LIGHT HAS NOT COME ON AGAIN THAT WE HAVE NOTICED. THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU ALWAYS CHECK WHEN RIDING IN THE CAR. *TR

I WAS DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC TAKING MY WIFE TO WORK. I WAS GOING ABOUT 15 TO 20 MPH BECAUSE OF MORNING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IN CHICAGO IS HEAVY. I TURNED MY HEAD TO ANSWER MY WIFE AND BEING DISTRACTED I TURNED MY HEAD BACK AND SAW THE BIG SUV IN FRONT OF ME WAS STOPPED AND I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND SLID INTO THE REAR OF HIS SUV. ONLY A SMALL DING AND SCRATCH I SEEN AND MY CAR HAD THE BUMPER BROKEN, HOOD BENT UP, CRINKLES IN SIDE FENDERS. EVEN THE POLICE COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW THE CAR WAS ALL DAMAGED AT THAT TYPE SPEEDS AND NO AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. ANYWAY I WAS TOLD PROBABLY I WAS GOING TOO SLOW AND SLID INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT AND MAYBE THERE IS A CERTAIN FORCE TO MAKE THEM BLOW OFF. I GOT A LITTLE OVER $5000 DAMAGE. LIKE THE CAR IS AS THIN AS A POP CAN AND NO AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE BODY SHOP WHEN THEY REPAIR IT IS GOING TO CHECK THE AIR BAG SYSTEM... I CALLED NISSAN AND THEY CLAIM A SUPERVISOR WILL BE CALLING ME BACK IN A FEW DAYS... *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED TWO WEEKS AGO. THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WOULD NOT RECLINE, AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT HAD DISTORTED BOLTS AND THE WIRES THAT WERE UNDER THE FRONT EAT WERE NOT PLACED CORRECTLY. THESE WIRES WERE FOR THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG THEREFORE; THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG WOULD NOT WORK IF AN ACCIDENT HAS OCCURRED.
