Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, ignition, anti-theft, immobilizer/proximity, key/senderFeb 16, 2023

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.

Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.

  1. Power train, Electrical system, Nov 6, 2023

While driving home from work, the vehicle's transmission stopped working, resulting in coasting out of traffic and requiring a tow home at night. My safety and the safety of others were at risk. The next morning, the vehicle was towed to the mechanic shop, which confirmed the transmission failed and needs a complete replacement. There was not any warning lights or clear symptoms. In hindsight, there were some slight performance warnings that began about 2 miles prior to failure. The vehicle had a slight hesitation (like driving a car that wasn't warmed up prior to the 1990s or using cheap gas) but it was so slight and not alarming or cause for concern. The following day I was scheduled to drive to San Fransisco, had the failure occurred on I-80, it would have been a dangerous situation. Another safety issue is the radio screen that doesn't work when the outside temperature is hot, it flashes so bright, and it is so distracting that I put a postcard in front of it to dim the strobe effect. The dealership said I need to replace the computer but it was safe to drive. This vehicle has been well maintained and has approx 121k miles. The link to the repair estimate from the mechanic stopped working after I declined the $9000 cost. So I cannot provide that. The vehicle was towed back to my home, and it is parked in my driveway until I figure out what to do.

  2. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Engine, Oct 31, 2023

While driving home from work, my wife was attempting to merge onto the on-ramp to the highway, and the vehicle jerked violently and RPM's skyrocketed but the speed was barely climbing. The speed didn't rise above 20mph until RPM's reached 4k. We had to creep all the way home with the engine whining and juddering and couldn't go above 45mph. This is extremely dangerous and the mechanics are saying there's nothing they can do other than buy an entirely new transmission because the CVT is complete trash, ,there was all kinds of debris in the bottom of the pan and Nissan is acting like they have no idea what we are talking about. I'm at a complete lost as to why there aren't any recalls for the 2016 Nissan Rogue CVT transmissions!!!!!! This is unsafe and I will never purchase anything affiliated with Nissan!

  3. Power train, Oct 27, 2023

I was driving my car as normal, when I stopped for red light to wait the green light , The car could engage in proper gear . This is automatic transmission I had nothing to do with shift . The vehicle had a delay to engage in the next gear. In order the vehicle to move The RMP had to be raised until 4,000 rpm. on The high way the car couldn't go over 45mph. Each traffic light or stop sign I had to wait and push the acceleration pedal very slow otherwise the car would jump. Taking to the dealership they said it is transmission issue . I had to pay more than $7,000 just for the new transmission.

  4. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Oct 25, 2023

On July 15, 23 was driving home from Dr appt n my rpm was going crazy, the engine was whining while I was driving rogue and didn't hardly move. I had it towed and mechanic said was totalled. Transmission is out. 3 mechanic said same was totalled. There needs to be recall on 2016 nissan rogue transmission!!!

  5. Seats, Oct 15, 2023

Good evening, I’m not sure if I’m doing this correctly. The reason I’m writing this letter is because my wife was currently driving a Nissan Rogue 2016 SV until we purchased a new car this year. I cannot recall exactly when I started to hear the noise or feel my driver seat on my Nissan Rogue rocking back when accelerating and rocking forward when pressing the brakes normally. I verify my VIN number to see if there a was a recall for my vehicle because I thought Nissan sent an email pertaining to certain Rogues were having seat issues. I took my Nissan Rogue to Bill Seidle’s Nissan in Miami to get my regular maintenance and I ask them to check my driver’s seat. My Rogue had 85,056 when I took it to the dealer on 10/9/2023. The dealer stated the driver seat had excessive play because of the railings. This repair will cost $1,747.57 parts and labor. The price of the seat frame ranges from $1,200.00 to $1,400.00. I do not know what the threshold for a vehicle is to be place under recall list, however I do think, an investigation should start with the 2016 Nissan Rogue. There are blogs regarding the driver’s seat of the Nissan Rogue with the same problem that I have. I did reach out to Nissan customer support however I lost my case number. My concern is what happens if I get rear ended. How much does my weight affects the frame or the railing. Is the railing weak from the manufacturer and as a consumer I have to $1,700.00. 6. Other or unspecified, Oct 11, 2023

Follow up from Nissan district regional manager was the same as the Nissan dealership. They refuse to help and have zero issues sending people off onto the road with an unsafe vehicle that can stall or stop at any time. There needs to be another class action lawsuit opened for all of the people who are still experiencing these problems because there are a ton of Nissan Rogue owners who have transmission issues that the dealership refuses to acknowledge and fix.

  7. Other or unspecified, Oct 10, 2023

I am back at the Nissan dealer to fix a recall but also to express my continued concerns regarding the clunking noise that I keep hearing when I accelerate. A year ago I was told by this same Nissan dealer that it was part of the transmission and there was nothing that they could do for me. Today I requested for it to be looked into again and the report back is they test drove it and hear no noise which is a LIE. I hear it every single time I drive my car and now u am being sent back on the road to drive a car I feel unsafe in. Nissan intentionally ignores you simply because there is no check engine light on despite there being a problem driving the car. They are forcing time to pass on so that the warranty and mileage is past the point of them being accountable to fix the issue. I don’t recommend anyone buying a Nissan rogue because they don’t care whether or not you feel safe.

  8. Power train, Oct 6, 2023

Driving home on the highway my car begin to rev high, but lose speed, then again when I went to pass in the passing lane, I pulled over for about 5mins, then proceeded to drive, about 2 mins in it started doing it again, but this time it made noises, and was vibrating/shuddering as if something was in the gears, I pulled over and got roadside assistance which in-turn led to the towing of my car to a safe location. once off the flatbed, I went to park my car, it did all the noises and revving once again, but as I placed it in park there was fast clicking sound and the car rolled back (while in park), I then applied the brakes harder then released again, and it began to roll again... once again I applied the brakes, as well as the parking brake and it remained stationary.

  9. Other or unspecified, Sep 27, 2023

A transmission issue with my vehicle first occurred on the highway. I purchased the vehicle in 2021 from Carvana who stated all open recalls had been taken care of. When I took the car into the dealership for the transmission issue, Nissan said the recall expired a couple months ago and would not honor the expired class action lawsuit. I'm trying to see what my options are for getting this repair done.

  10. Other or unspecified, Sep 22, 2023

My car key fob is in perfect working conditions with no defect. I was told by a person my key fob, would ve deactivated if it wasn't repaired. My fob work just fine, and my bigger concern is that my alarm with locking my car is associated with my fob. My safety of car jacking and theft is larger if my fob is deactivated. I dont have a broken fob. So if my car can't lock and it gets stolen, I will sue Nissan, and and will go after those who can't just change or replace the gobs with some thing updated.

  12. Seat belts, Sep 11, 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that the front driver's side seat belt locking mechanism had malfunctioned and was sometimes difficult to lock and unlock. The contact stated that the locking mechanism had become stuck and would not immediately unlock and release on multiple occasions. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

  13. Electrical system, Sep 10, 2023

When I am driving my 2016 Nissan Rogue the automobile itself with no others in the vehicle starts unlocking and locking the doors automatically.

  14. Power train, Sep 6, 2023

While driving on a major highway, my newly licensed 16-year-old son experienced shuddering, jerking (slight at first, but progressively worse) and failure to take off from a traffic light. He turned on the emergency flashing lights to alert other drivers, and he was able to take off about 5 seconds later, but the RPMs raced sporadically and acceleration stopped working. He drifted into a left turn lane and prayed he would make it across two lanes of active traffic without stopping. My independent service center and our closest dealer confirmed diagnosis (transmission replacement needed) and I had to have it towed to the dealer through my insurance company. NO WARNING LAMPS OR MESSAGES APPEARED PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. Nissan was unwilling to provide any financial assistance or goodwill toward the necessary transmission replacement, although this is a known defect in CVT transmissions. Their only action has been service bulletins and a settlement for an extra 24,000 miles beyond the original 60,000. I am fortunate my son was not a casualty of this poor craftsmanship, but I guess since no one has died yet, Nissan doesn't have to do the right thing and recall these faulty transmissions. Poor customer service and poor vehicles. This is my fourth Nissan, and two of them have had transmission issues. I will NEVER buy another. My family is too valuable to risk in one of these experiments.

  15. Air bags, Sep 5, 2023, crash

AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY IN A VIOLENT CAR ACCIDENT. OTHER VEHICLE'S AIRBAGS DID DEPLOY. I HIT MY HEAD ON THE SIDE WINDOW OR DOOR VERY HARD, AND THE HEAD INJURY WAS FELT INSTANTLY AND ONSITE, I HAD TO GO TO THE ER AND GET A CT SCAN AND HAD A CONCUSSION. A COLLISION COMPANY IS INVESTIGATING THE DAMAGE AND AIRBAGS. AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST IF YOU WANT TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE AIRBAG LIGHTS THAT CAME ON FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT FROM TIME TO TIME.

  16. Forward collision avoidance, Sep 5, 2023

The warnings shown in the attached picture came on for no reason all at once then after a restart of the engine, they all disappeared except the check engine light. OBDII code reader shows the code P2004, but after clearing the code with the OBDII tool, the check engine light doesn't come back, which should mean the problem P2004 does not exist anymore. The same story has happened several times in the past year.

  17. Electrical system, Visibility, Sep 1, 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the air conditioning blower became inoperable, and the front windshield could not be defrosted, creating a visibility hazard for the driver. Also, the front driver's side seat adjustment became inoperable, and the seat could not be re-adjusted back and forth. Additionally, the driver's side and passenger’s side view mirrors could not be adjusted electronically or manually. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the electrical connector was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously serviced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V024000 (Electrical System) but the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall after the repair was performed. The failure mileage was 70,000.

  18. Power train, Aug 31, 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled and lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with rear differential failure, all-wheel drive failure, and clutch unit failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact stated that she was informed by the warranty company that the part needed to complete the repair was not covered under her warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.

  19. Service brakes, Air, Engine, Forward collision avoidance, Aug 21, 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH, the RPM fluctuated however, the vehicle failed to respond. The Forward Collision Avoidance, ABS, and the check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the accessory hood filter and transmission fluid was replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.

  20. Power train, Aug 20, 2023

On August 12 2023 on a trip to hershey PA my rogue felt like she was barely stuttering. I was passenger at the time, asked the driver if they felt that and if it was the car or the road because it felt almost like vibrations on uneven road. Then the rpm's dropped at highway speed like it needed to downshift, paused just above 2k and popped back up. Minutes later the transmission light came on. It continued to happen on and off on the way home and to the airport the following day. I parked her for a week until could get her to the garage (she moved less than 20 miles in that week). Taking her to winchester, the stutter became more "vibrant" and distinct happening no less than 12 times in 35 miles. I've never had issues previous to Aug 12. The shop said transmission failure. When I brought up the history of cvt issues and asked for additional warranty on the repair (beyond the 12 mos they quoted) . Obviously this is a known issue, the dealer makinge feel as if they are trying to ignore it is frustrating.

  21. Power train, Aug 17, 2023

During highway driving speeds vehicle will suddenly lose power and slow down. Pressing accelerator pedal increases RPM but not the speed. With cruise control engaged vehicle will suddenly and abruptly slow down with RPMs climbing to 4000. I fear that I will be hit from behind because of suddenly slowing down. Also unable to pass vehicles due to loss of power.

  22. Power train, Aug 13, 2023

Problem with transmission- sluggish when accelerating Very unsafe to drive I obtained diagnostic test from Simba Automotive- code: p1564-p0841-p17f0 At first there was no warning but after a few more drives warning engine light appeared on dashboard. Recommendation is to replace the transmission- cost around 7500 USD

  23. Other or unspecified, Aug 4, 2023

Driving on Highway 65-68 MPH, RPMs rose drastically (4-5 RPMS) and gas pedal did not operate. Slowed to side of road, shut car off. Waited on side of road approximately 3-4 minutes restarted car and drove to home. Immediately made appointment at Bradenton Nissan on February 11, 2022 stating to the Service Dept. what had happened. They claimed "Transmission did not duplicate problem no problem=no found; no code related to CVT". On August 1, 2023 same thing happened on highway travelling approx. 67 MPH, went to change lanes and car would not operate; RPMs flew to 5-6. Pulled to traffic light stopped engine and started again; drove home. August 2, 2023 took to Bradenton Nissan where they stated it was a transmission problem. Why was this not fixed in February of 2022? It was a major safety issue at that time.

  24. Equipment, Jul 30, 2023

Air conditioner and fan shuts off when driving long distance (50 - 100 miles) then comes back on intermittent.

  25. Power train, Jul 27, 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to accelerate and started to jerk and hesitate. The contact stated that the RPM raised quickly, and the speedometer failed to operate as needed. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact parked at a nearby gas station for an hour before continuing to drive to her destination however, the failure persisted. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and the vehicle was diagnosed with needing the transmission to be replaced. The mechanic provided an oil change on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired and continued to experience the failure. The contact had another independent mechanic to inspect the vehicle at the residence and was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 131,000.
