Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  3. Air bags, frontal, passenger side, inflator moduleDo not drive until repairedJan 10, 2017

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012 Ford Fusion and Mustang and Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Ford is recalling certain 2009 Ford Ranger, Edge, Fusion and Mustang, Lincoln MKX, MKZ and Zephyr and Mercury Milan vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" or "Zone B" above, Ford is recalling certain 2007-2008 Ford Ranger, Edge and Lincoln MKX, 2006-2008 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ, 2005-2008 Ford Mustang and 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in the states of Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners of the recall and that parts are not yet available began mailing March 1, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S01.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. 5. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

  1. Service brakes, Feb 19, 2017

I WANT TO ADD MY NAME TO THE BRAKE SOFTENING ISSUE THAT OCCURS ON SOME FUSIONS AFTER THE ABS IS ACTIVATED. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND IT TAKES DAYS FOR THE BRAKES TO RECOVER. THE MOST RECENT TIME OCCURRED LAST WEEK AND THE BRAKES ARE STILL SOFT AND THE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR BEFORE PROPER BREAKING OCCURS. I AM VERY CONCERNED BECAUSE IF I NEED TO STOP QUICKLY TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT OR PEDESTRIAN, I AM AFRAID I WON'T BE ABLE TO. PLEASE CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS PROBLEM, I FEEL THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE A RECALL. FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME IF YOU HAVE ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS ISSUE.

  2. Service brakes, Feb 16, 2017

THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES SOFT WHEN I BRAKE ON A ROUGH, OR UNEVEN ROAD. THE PEDAL REMAINS SOFT UNTIL THE CAR IS SHUT OFF, AND NOT USED FOR AN EXTENDED TIME PERIOD OF TIME. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME MORE THAN ONCE. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN LATE 2015. I SPENT OVER $500 GETTING A MAJORITY OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM REPLACED. IT JUST HAPPENED AGAIN ON MONDAY, FEB 13, 2017.

  3. Air bags, Feb 11, 2017

TAKATA RECALL. I RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE ON THE AIRBAGS IN JULY 2016 STATING THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTED WHEN PARTS BECAME AVAILABLE. I HAVE RECEIVED NO FURTHER COMMUNICATION SO I CONTACTED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER IN DECEMBER 2016. THE DEALER TOLD ME PARTS WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL SOMETIME IN 2017; POSSIBLY THE SECOND OR THIRD QUARTER OF 2017

  4. Service brakes, Feb 11, 2017

I HAVE EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES ON 2 OCCASIONS; BOTH TIMES THE ANTI-LOCK HAS ENGAGED BRIEFLY AND THEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT "SOFT", TRAVELING QUITE FAR. THE FIRST TIME I WAS DRIVING OVER A ROUGH SPOT AND APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE SECOND TIME THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ENGAGED WHEN I BRAKED ON AN ICY SPOT.

I JUST NOTICE THAT MY DASH BOARD IS COMING UP ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BUT I DID NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED IT. I NEED THIS LOOKED AT ASAP.

AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED FOR THE RECALL REMEDY WERE STILL NOT AVAILABLE AND NO ESTIMATED TIME FOR RECEIVING THE PARTS COULD BE PROVIDED. TAKATA RECALL IT'S BEEN 6 MONTHS SINCE I'VE BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL AND STILL NO FURTHER COMMUNICATION HAS FOLLOWED. THERE HAS CERTAINLY BEEN ENOUGH TIME PASSED FOR A SOLUTION TO HAVE BEEN ARRANGED. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THIS CAR AND I'M WORRIED ABOUT HER SAFETY. PLEASE TAKE ANY ACTION THAT YOU CAN TO EXPIDITE A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANKS.

  9. Service brakes, Feb 3, 2017

AFTER HITTING A BUMP IN THE ROAD THE BRAKES BECAME SOFT, GOING ALMOST TO THE FLOOR. I WAS DRIVING ON A PAVED COUNTY ROAD.

  10. Air bags, Feb 3, 2017

    MY AIRBAG INDICATOR IS ON

  11. Service brakes, Feb 2, 2017

WHILE DRIVING MY 2007 FORD FUSION APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES AN HOUR AND APPROACHING A STOPLIGHT, I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND THE CAR PASSED OVER A ROUGH PATCH OF ROAD WITH SEVERAL POTHOLES. THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME SOFT AND MOVED DOWN TOWARDS THE FLOORBOARD AND THE CAR COASTED WITHOUT CONTINUING TO SLOW DOWN. AFTER RELEASING THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THEN APPLYING THE BRAKES AGAIN, THE PEDAL WAS STILL SOFT AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO COAST AND EVENTUALLY CAME TO A STOP WELL INTO THE INTERSECTION AFTER THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS MASHED TO THE FLOOR. THE SOFT BRAKE ISSUE CONTINUED AS I DROVE THE CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THE REPAIR SHOP HAS BEEN ABLE TO REMEDY THE FIX BY BLEEDING THE BRAKE LINES BUT THE ISSUE HAS RECURRED OVER TIME AND THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A PERMANENT FIX MADE AVAILABLE. THIS IS THE FOURTH OCCURRENCE OF THIS "SOFT BRAKE" PROBLEM OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. EACH TIME IT HAS OCCURRED I HAVE AVOIDED A COLLISION BUT WORRY THAT I MAY NOT BE AS LUCKY THE NEXT TIME THIS OCCURS. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN JULY 2007 AND HAD NO BRAKE ISSUES UNTIL TWO YEARS AGO. GIVEN THAT THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM, I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND NOTICED THAT OTHERS ARE BEGINNING TO HAVE THE SAME EXPERIENCE THAT I AM AND HAVE REPORTED IT. I HOPE THE NHTSA IS ABLE TO INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE AND ISSUE A RECALL THAT WILL MAKE THESE VEHICLES SAFER FOR EVERYONE ON THE ROAD. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 FORD FUSION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO HAVE THE CLUTCH REPLACED. WHILE HAVING THE REPAIRS COMPLETED, THE TECHNICIAN FRACTURED A TORQUE MOUNT THAT CONNECTED THE ENGINE TO THE TRANSMISSION. ALL THE PARTS WERE REPLACED ON THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE REPAIRS, WHILE DRIVING IN THE SNOW AND CHANGING LANES, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL STARTED SPINNING. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE TORQUE MOUNT FRACTURED AGAIN. THE CONTACT HEARD A KNOCKING NOISE IN THE TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE. THE TORQUE MOUNT WAS REPLACED AGAIN. TAKATA RECALL, I RECEIVED A NOTICE OF RECALL DATED JULY 2016,FOR PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG REPLACEMENT. I WAS LIVING IN ZONE A, BUT HAVE SINCE RELOCATED. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE COVER AREA OF THE AIRBAG IS NOW SEPARATED, AND I DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO BE SEATED IN THE PASSENGERS SEAT. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT I HAVE TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF MY SINCE THE DATE OF PURCHASE. IN THE WORST CASE SCENARIO SHOULD SOMEONE BE SEATED IN THE PASSENGER AREA AND THE BAG DEPLOYS IN A NON ACCIDENT TIME OF TRAVEL I WILL BE LEFT WITH NO OTHER OPTION BUT TO SEEK CIVIL ACTION FOR ALL DAMAGES, BOTH INJURY AND INTERIOR DAMAGES. I AM ONLY WRITING SO THAT THERE A RECORD AS TO BE NOTED. THANK YOU *TR

  20. Air bags, Jan 13, 2017

"TAKATA RECALL" : SINCE I RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF THIS RECALL IN JULY 2016, I HAVE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, CALLED FORD, CALLED NHTSA, AND FILLED OUT A COMPLAINT FORM THAT WAS MAILED TO ME BY NHTSA. THE DASH IN MY CAR IS BULGING ABOVE THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG. MY MECHANIC IS TELLING ME THE AIR BAG IS LIKELY "TWISTED." I BELIEVE THIS QUALIFIES ME FOR AN IMMEDIATE REPAIR. FROM WHAT I READ ON THE RECALL SITE, FORD CAN DO AN "INTERIM" REPAIR ON HIGH RISK VEHICLES DEFINED AS: OLDER VEHICLES EXPOSED TO HIGH HUMIDITY/HIGH TEMP. I LIVED IN SANTA FE NM FROM MAY - AUGUST 2016 - WHICH IS ABOUT THE TIME I NOTICED THE SUDDEN BULGE IN THE DASH. I CURRENTLY LIVE IN FLORIDA WHICH IS ANOTHER HIGH HUMIDITY/HIGH TEMP CLIMATE. FORD SHOULD CONSIDER MY VEHICLE AS "HIGH RISK" AND SEND ME THE PAPERWORK I NEED TO HAVE IT REPAIRED IMMEDIATELY. AT THE VERY LEAST, THEY SHOULD SEND ME A VOUCHER SO I CAN TAKE IT TO ANY FORD DEALERSHIP TO GET IT CHECKED - FREE OF CHARGE. THE SUDDEN BULGE IN THE DASH ABOVE THE AIRBAG IS CLEARLY AN INDICATION SOMETHING IS WRONG. FORD SHOULD BE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO GET MY CAR CHECKED AND REPAIRED AT NO CHARGE TO ME. AT THIS POINT, NO ONE FROM FORD HAS CALLED OR MADE ANY ATTEMPT TO OFFER ME A SOLUTION. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT RECOURSE I HAVE TO GET THIS TAKEN CARE OF.

I RECEIVED NOTICED OF THE PASSENGER AIR BAG HAVING A RECALL ON IT MONTHS AGO. FORD HASN'T NO IDEA ON WHEN THIS PART WILL BE IN AND IN THE MEANTIME, I DON'T FEEL SAFE HAVING OTHERS IN MY PASSENGER SEAT. WHY SHOULD IT BE TAKING THIS LONG FOR FORD TO RECEIVE THEIR PARTS? 24. Wheels, Jan 10, 2017

THE FIRST INCIDENT WITH MY 2007 FUSION BRAKES OCCURRED JUNE 23, 2016. I WAS GOING DOWN A SIDE STREET NEAR MY HOME ABOUT 20 MPH IN THE DAY TIME WHEN I NOTICED A WOMAN TUMBLING INTO TRAFFIC FROM HER BICYCLE. I STOPPED SUDDENLY TO AVOID RUNNING OVER HER. I STOPPED TO HELP HER BUT AFTERWARDS AS I CONTINUED ON MY WAY I NOTICED MY BRAKES WERE VERY SQUISHY. I HAD TO PRESS EXTRA HARD AT EACH INTERSECTION TO GET THEM TO STOP. I HAD THE BRAKES REPAIRED AT BRAKES PLUS. I WAS TOLD THE MASTER CYLINDER NEEDED REPLACEMENT AND THE BRAKES FLUSHED.

  25. Wheels, Service brakes, Jan 10, 2017

MY 2007 FUSION FREQUENTLY HAS SOFT BRAKES, THE BRAKE PEDAL FEELS SQUISHY AND GOES DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND I AM UNABLE TO STOP WITHIN MY DESIRED STOPPING DISTANCE. THIS USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION ON CITY STREETS HOWEVER LAST NIGHT IT HAPPENED IN MY GARAGE. IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES (JUNE 24, 2016 THROUGH JAN 9, 2017) AND I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY CAR. I HAVE HAD 2 MASTER CYLINDERS, BRAKES FLUSHED 2 TIMES, 2 NEW FRONT ROTORS, AND PAID FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING BUT THE ONLY CODE DISPLAYED WAS THAT THE CAR NEEDED NEW SPARK PLUGS. *TR
