Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. 3. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  18. Engine and engine coolingDec 3, 2012

This is an update to a recently announced recall. Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines, as well as certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. Coolant system leaks may cause the engines to overheat and leak flammable engine fluids.

If flammable engine fluids come in contact with the vehicle’s hot exhaust system, a vehicle fire could occur.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine for coolant system leaks and reprogram the vehicle’s powertrain control module and instrument cluster with an updated calibration and overheat strategy software. There will be no charge to owners for this service. Owners were recently notified to contact dealers to arrange for alternative transportation as Ford developed a remedy. Owners will be shortly receiving notifications to contact Ford dealers to schedule the free remedy repair. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

  19. Exterior lighting, headlightsNov 30, 2012

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles, manufactured from February 3, 2012, through October 20, 2012, for failing to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." The affected vehicles may not have had the low beam headlamp projector coating properly cured during its manufacturing process.

An improperly cured projector coating will become hazy through operation, over time, reducing the brightness of the low-beam lamp. This may decrease driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headlamp assembly. The recall began on December 18, 2012. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

IN MODERATE TEMPERATURES, ~40-60 DEGREES F, THE ENGINE WILL STALL JUST AFTER STARTING TO DRIVE. SO IN THE SPRING AND THE FALL. IT DOES NOT OCCUR IN THE WINTER OR THE SUMMER. IT USUALLY OCCURS AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN WARMED UP AND DRIVEN AND THEN TURNED OFF FOR A WHILE. FOR INSTANCE, IF I DRIVE OUT TO LUNCH, STOP AND EAT, AND THEN START DRIVING AGAIN. JUST AFTER I START MOVING, SAY 100 FT., THE ENGINE STARTS RUNNING ROUGH AND NOTHING I DO WILL STOP IT FROM DYING. USUALLY IT STARTS RIGHT UP AND AND THEN IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN THAT DRIVE CYCLE. ONLY ONCE HAS IT OCCURRED TWICE IN A ROW. NO "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" OR CODES. HAD IT CHECKED BY A MECHANIC. THEY CHANGED THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, BUT IT DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE. STARTED OCCURRING IN THE SPRING OF 2018.

FORD FUSION 2013 WHILE DRIVING FUEL GAS CAP WILL MAKE A NOISE OF AIR COMING OUT, IF IT CONTINUES THE CAR WILL TURN OFF EVEN WHEN DRIVING OR STATIONARY ON BOTH HIGHWAY AND STREET HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN 4 TIMES FORD AGENCY SAID THEY WILL NOT FIX IT

HELLO, ON 03/14/2019 I CHATTED FORD ON MY NUMEROUS RECALLS ON MY 2013 FORD FUSION. I WAS GIVEN CASE# (XXXXX) AND TOLD TO TAKE TO A FORD DEALERSHIP FOR ASSESSMENT ON PRIOR RECALL REPAIRS. IN 2017 WE HAD A COOLANT RECALL AND WAS TOLD BY DAVE LITTLETON FORD IN SMITHVILLE, MO. THAT WE HAD ANTI-FREEZE ALL OVER OUR ENGINE AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE WHOLE ENGINE. WE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS OR SIGNS THAT IT HAD A COOLANT PROBLEM? WE TOOK IN BECAUSE WE GOT THE RECALL NOTICE. MY CAR HAS NEVER RAN RIGHT SINCE. IT IDLES FAST ETC. IN DECEMBER OUR FLEX PLATE CRACKED, NOW 3 MONTHS LATER IT CRACKED AGAIN. OUR MECHANIC SAYS THE ENGINE DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN LINED UP CORRECTLY WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE ISSUES BECAUSE OF THE SHOTTY MECHANICAL WORK DONE BY DAVE LITTLETON FORD. WE HAVE TAKEN TO GARY CROSSLEY FORD IN KC, MO. THEY ALSO AGREE THERE IS SHOTTY MECHANICAL WORK DONE TO THE ENGINE REPAIR DUE TO RECALL? WE HAVE BEEN 2 WEEKS WITH NO WORD ON HOW THIS ISSUE IS GOING TO BE RESOLVED AND ARE WITHOUT A CAR? I NEED SOME ANSWERS? THE ENGINE WAS NOT ALIGNED CORRECTLY AND SEALANT WAS PUT IN PLACES IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN WHEN REPLACED. I AM NO MECHANIC BUT THEY HAVE SUBMITTED IN THE CLAIM THEY ARE SENDING IN WITH GREATER DETAIL CANDICE SAYS:THE REASON I AM ASKING THESE QUESTIONS IS BECAUSE WE ARE NOT ABLE TO VIEW CLAIMS ENTERED BY THE DEALER. I WANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS THAT THEY WERE WAITING FOR. SO, THEY CAN COMPLETE THE REPAIR, THEY ARE JUST WAITING FOR FORD TO SAY IT CAN BE DONE UNDER THE RECALL, IS THAT CORRECT? AMY SAYS: YES IF I WAS NOT SOLD A CAR WITH A FAULTY PART I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD COOLANT ALL OVER MY ENGINE TO HAVE TO BE REPLACED. IF AN APPOINTED FORD MECHANIC HAD CORRECTLY REPLACED ENGINE I WOULD NOT BE IN THIS SITUATION? FORD CONTINUES TO CLOSE CLAIMS AND IGNORE ISSUES! CASE#(XXXXX) PARTS OF THIS DOCUMENT HAVE BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

WHEN THE CAR IS WARM, THE VEHICLE WILL STALL EVERY TIME WHEN RESTARTED AFTER IT WAS TURNED OFF FOR LESS THAN AND HOUR. LOSES ALL THROTTLE RESPONSE, HAVE HAD A FEW SCARES WHEN TURNING ONTO A BUSY ROAD AND VEHICLE STALLS. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

  20. Engine, Mar 4, 2019

THE ENGINE GET OVERHEAT AND STOP WORKING. THE COOLANT LEVEL KEEP DECREASING ALONG THE DRIVING, BUT DIDN'T FIND ANY LEAKING. IT SHOULD BE RELATED TO FORD RECALL 17S09

  21. Power train, Electrical system, Engine, Feb 27, 2019

THE VEHICLE HAS AN ELECTRICAL GLITCH AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO PARK THE CAR IT WILL SHOW AS PARK BUT WILL ACTUALLY SLIP INTO NEUTRAL AND ROLL FORWARD OR BACK IF IN A SLIGHT HILL. ALSO AN MANUFACTURING ERROR IS CAUSING THE CAR TO ABRUPTLY STOP WHILE ON DRIVING. THE RPMS WILL INCREASE BY ITSELF AND THEN SUDDENLY FALL TO 0 AND THE CAR WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE. ALL THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS WILL STILL BE ON I.E. RADIO , HEAT , LIGHTS BUT THE CAR WILL NOT MOVE. IT'S NO WARNING AS TO WHEN IT WILL JUST SUDDENLY STOP SO IT'S EXTREMELY UNSAFE IF DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY.

  22. Vehicle speed control, Electronic stability control (ESC), Engine, Feb 19, 2019

TAKAT RECALL: DRIVING CAR WARNING LIGHT COMES ON THEN OFF TOO FAST TO SEE WHAT WARNING IS. WHILE DRIVING ON A STREET, CAR TRIES TO STOP ON OWN LIKE HITTING BRAKES WHICH I AM NOT.

  23. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Feb 4, 2019

MY CAR SHUTTERS AT AN IDOL OR SLOWLY TAKING OFF WHERE IT SHUTS OFF.THIS HAS HAPPENED MORE THEN ONCE AND THE SCARY THING IS I'VE PULLED OUT IN A INTERSECTION AND THE CAR SHUTS OFF. I HAVE TO PUT IT IN PARK AND RESTART IT.IT'S HAPPENING MORE OFTEN NOW MY ENGINE LIGHT JUST CAME ON AFTER THIS HAPPING FOR OVER A MONTH NOW.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET. MY CAR HAD NO SIGNS OF TROUBLE. SUDDENLY SMOKE STARTED COMING FROM THE HEAT VENTS ON THE DASH. I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO A PARKING LOT AND GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE. AT THIS TIME I SAW FLAMES COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I CALLED 911. BY THE TIME OF ARRIVAL OF THE FIRE DEPT THE CAR WAS FULLY INVOLVED IN FLAMES.

  25. Engine, Jan 28, 2019, fire

ON JANUARY 3RD 2019 AROUND 5AM, I SAW A SIGNAL SAYING "ENGINE COOLANT OVER TEMPERATURE" AND ANOTHER ONE REGARDING THE STEERING WHEEL. I THEN NOTICED THAT MY STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED BUT I MANAGED TO PARK ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. A VEHICLE BEHIND ME NOTIFIED ME THAT THERE WAS A FIRE. MY VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE LESS THAN 24 HOURS AFTER LEAVING FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR AN OIL CHANGE. RECORDS ALSO SHOW THAT MY VEHICLE WAS PART OF A RECALL REGARDING THE ENGINE COOLANT, THAT MAY LEAD TO FIRE. I RECEIVED THAT RECALL LETTER DAYS AFTER MY CAR BROKE DOWN DUE TO AN ENGINE COOLANT RELATED ISSUE AND TOWED MY VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST REPAIR SHOP IN 2017. AFTER RECEPTION OF THAT RECALL LETTER, I ALSO MADE SURE TO TAKE MY VEHICLE TO FORD SERVICES, WITH THE INVOICE OF THE REPAIR THAT HAD JUST BEEN DONE. THEY TOOK MY CAR TO THEIR SHOP AND REASSURED ME THAT THE RECALL ISSUE WAS RESOLVED BY THE RECENT REPAIR AND FILED FOR A REIMBURSEMENT CHECK FROM FORD, THAT I HAVE RECEIVED. AS OF TODAY, WHEN I PUT MY VIN NUMBER TO VERIFY THE RECALL, IT SAYS "INCOMPLETE". I FILED A CLAIM THROUGH FORD ON JANUARY 4TH 2019, A DAY AFTER THE FIRE AND HAS YET TO HEAR FROM THEM.
