Engine and engine coolingDec 3, 2012
This is an update to a recently announced recall. Coolant system leaks may cause the engines to overheat and leak flammable engine fluids.
If flammable engine fluids come in contact with the vehicles hot exhaust system, a vehicle fire could occur.
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine for coolant system leaks and reprogram the vehicles powertrain control module and instrument cluster with an updated calibration and overheat strategy software. There will be no charge to owners for this service. Owners were recently notified to contact dealers to arrange for alternative transportation as Ford developed a remedy. The affected vehicles may not have had the low beam headlamp projector coating properly cured during its manufacturing process.
An improperly cured projector coating will become hazy through operation, over time, reducing the brightness of the low-beam lamp. This may decrease driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headlamp assembly. The recall began on December 18, 2012. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

HELLO, MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW VEHICLE FROM FORD THREE YEARS AGO AND JUST RECENTLY, WHEN MY CAR WAS IN PARK, I SHIFTED THE GEAR AND IT WENT IN REVERSE. I GOT SCARED AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. IT DID NOT TURN ON AFTER THAT AND IT HAD TO GET TOWED TO GALPIN FORD IN NORTH HILLS. FORD TOLD ME THAT IT WAS AN ERODED TRANSMISSION CABLE THAT I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO REPAIR. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY MY BRAND NEW CAR HAS AN ERODED PART IN IT. I LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WHERE ARE THERE NO HAZARD WEATHER CONDITIONS. I GOOGLED HOW YOU COULD HAVE AN ERODED CABLE AND IT IS FROM ACID. I FEEL LIKE FORDS PARTS ARE NOT UP TO SAFETY STANDARDS BY MY CASE AND WOULD LIKE AN INVESTIGATION DONE WITH FORD. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS. THANK YOU! WE HAVE HAD OUR 2103 FUSION NOW FOR 2 MONTHS. 1 WEEK AFTER HAVING THE CAR IT BEGAN TO MAKE A HUMMING NOISE AROUND THE GAS TANK AREA, THEN WHEN YOU SLOWED DOWN FOR A RED LIGHT THE CAR WOULD STALL AND BE HARD TO START BACK. SENT THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO ONLY BE TOLD THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. ONCE WE RECEIVED THE CAR BACK WE DROVE IT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND THE CAR STARTED MAKING THE NOISE AGAIN AND WOULD STALL AGAIN. CALLED DEALERSHIP AND TOOK CAR BACK AGAIN STILL NOTHING. RECEIVED CAR BACK AND BEGAN TO NOTICE WHEN WE WAS FUELING THE CAR THAT THE RPM GAUGE WOULD GO UP AND DOWN AND THEN THE VEHICLE WOULD QUIT AND BE VERY HARD TO START BACK. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO IT STALLED AGAIN AND WOULD NOT START BACK, FINALLY AFTER ABOUT 30 MINS OF TRYING THE CAR STARTED. SENT CAR BACK TO DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND THEY HAVE HAD THE CAR 3 WEEKS AND THEY ARE SAYING THEY CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I ASKED IF THEY HAD PUT FUEL IN IT LIKE I ADVISED THEY PROCEEDED TO TELL ME NO. I ADVISED THEM WHEN THEY DID TO LET ME KNOW WHAT THE CAR DID. WE NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE CAR. I BELIEVE WE EITHER HAVE A FUEL PUMP ISSUE OR THE VEHICLE IS PULLING AIR IN FROM THE FUELING SYSTEM AND IS CAUSING IT TO AIR LOCK. THE VEHICLE HAS QUIT ABOUT 12-15 TIMES IN THE 2 MONTHS WE HAVE HAD IT

I PUT MY VEHICLE IN PARK AND IT KEPT GOING DUE TO THE SHIFT LINKAGE BREAKING, IT REMAINED IN DRIVE THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING TO A 3 YEAR OLD CAR WITH 88K ON IT. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I DISCOVERED THIS QUITE COMMON AMONG THE NEWER FUSION'S, FOCUS'S AND OTHER FORD PRODUCTS...UPDATED 01/04/17 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE PLASTIC BUSHING THAT HELD THE SHIFTER CABLE ONTO THE TRANSMISSION LINKAGE, WHICH CRACKED DUE TO DRY ROTTING. I ALSO SENT THE VIDEOS TO THEM. I HAVE BEEN TOLD TODAY THAT THEY WILL BE GIVING THE VEHICLE BACK WITHOUT ANY REPAIRS BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEN AFTER TURNING ON THE HEATER AND NOW LEAVING FOR WORK, I ACCELERATE TO GET ONTO THE FREEWAY AND SOON NOTICED THAT THE HEATER IS NOW BLOWING COLD AIR AND I THEN TURN THE HEATER UP HIGHER TO 77 THEN THE SAME WARMTH COME OUT THEN THAT GOES AWAY TIL I TURN THE HEATER WAY UP TO 83 DEGREES. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE, I HAD THE COOLANT AND OIL REPLACED AND IT IS STILL DOING THE SAME THING. I GET TWO WARNINGS SHOWING THE YELLOW WRENCH, "POWER REDUCED TO COOL DOWN ENGINE" AND "ENGINE OVERHEAT" THE SUNNYVALE FORD DEALER CHARGED ME $200.00 DOLLARS TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR AND SAID THEY HAVE FOUND NOTHING. BUT THIS PROBLEM ONLY HAPPENS ON THE FREEWAY DRIVING AT 65 TO 75 MPH. OUR FREEWAYS SPEED LIMITS ARE HIGH ON INTERSTATES 5. I DO SEE OLDER FORD TEMPO'S GOING 80 MPH AND PASSING ME WHILE I CANNOT GO FASTER TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF OTHERS. QUITE INSULTING TO ME WHILE I SPEND OUT OF POCKET AND FORD SAYS NOTHING AND I GET BACK A BROKEN CAR THAT WORKS SOMETIMES. THE EXTENDED WARRANTIES I PAY FOR DOES NOT COVER ANYTHING SO I'M PAYING FOR A CAR THAT IS SOON TO FAIL AND LEAVE ME STRANDED AT THE SAME TIME I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. FORD CONTINUE TO SAY MY CAR IS RUNNING WELL AND RETURNING IT BACK TO ME WITH PROBLEMS UNFIXED

THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS VEHICLE HAS A HARSH SHIFT FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEARS. FOR THE MOST PART ALL OTHER SHIFTS ARE SMOOTH. THE JERKY SHIFT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, NOT JUST WHEN THE CAR IS COLD. I'M AFRAID THAT THIS IS CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE INTERIOR OF THE TRANSMISSION AND THAT ONE DAY IT WILL STOP WORKING ALTOGETHER.

BEGINNING ABOUT JANUARY 2015, AND OCCURRING A TOTAL OF ABOUT SIX TIMES SO FAR, MY WIFE'S 2013 FUSION HYBRID (CURRENTLY WITH 25,500 MILES) EXPERIENCED WHAT FEELS LIKE A POWER SURGE. (I EXPERIENCED THIS ONCE IN THIS VEHICLE; THE REMAINDER WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING.) IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS IS RELATED TO THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM AT LEAST IN PART, AS I HAVE SEEN OTHERS DESCRIBE IT AS A FEELING OF HITTING AN ICE PATCH. THE GENERAL CONDITIONS WOULD INCLUDE: A) FOOT ON BRAKE; B) DECELERATING; C) PRESUMABLY IN EV MODE [THOUGH NOT NECESSARILY]; D) BEGINNING A LEFT TURN [BUT WE BELIEVE THIS IS INCIDENTAL]; E) WARM ENGINE; F) LESS THAN 30 MPH. ON OCTOBER 1, 2015, A NEW CONDITION CAUSED THE FEELING OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION, AS MY WIFE WAS ON A SIDE STREET NEAR OUR HOME WHEN SHE WAS APPROACHING A STOP SIGN AND FELT THE POWER SURGE, WHICH SHE STATES WAS MANY TIMES WORSE THAN ANY OTHER INSTANCE OF THIS EVENT THAT SHE EVER EXPERIENCED. CONDITIONS THIS TIME WERE THE SAME AS ABOVE BUT MOVING STRAIGHT AND LESS THAN 25 MPH. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP THE EVENING OF THE LAST INCIDENT. OF COURSE THEY FOUND NO CODES AND NO EVIDENCE OF ANYTHING WRONG. I ALSO CONTACTED THE FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER WHILE IT WAS IN THE SHOP TO DOCUMENT THAT WE HAD THIS PROBLEM. THEY SEEMED HELPFUL HOWEVER, UNLESS FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEIR ENGINEERING COMMUNITY ACKNOWLEDGE A PROBLEM AND DO SOMETHING TO ADDRESS IT, IT WILL FOREVER BE A GHOST IN THE MACHINE, WITH THE BLAME AND DOUBT FALLING ON THE VEHICLE OWNERS, NOT UNLIKE TOYOTA'S WELL DOCUMENTED, FATAL AND SHAMEFUL UNINTENDED ACCELERATION CASES. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT OUR SAFETY WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I HOPE THAT NO ONE GETS HURT OR KILLED WHILE THIS PROBLEM EXISTS AND URGE FORD MOTOR COMPANY TO GET TO THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE THAT MYSELF AND OTHER OWNERS ARE FEARFULLY EXPERIENCING.

MY WIFE AND I WERE ENTERING A PARKING LOT WITH THE FORD FUSION HYBRID AND SLOWED DOWN, THEN STARTED TO SLOWLY ACCELERATE, THE FFH WOULDN'T GO FORWARD NORMALLY AND SORT OF STALLED. MY HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY STATE WAS LOW (1/8 CHARGED) AND THE CAR HAD ABOUT 3/4 TANK OF GAS. IT BEGAN WITH A SERIES OF SURGES THAT WERE CAUSED BY THE CAR NOT KNOWING WHICH PROPULSION SOURCE TO USE. IT TRIED THE GAS ENGINE, SURGED FORWARD A FEW FEET THEN TRIED TO SWITCH BACK TO THE ELECTRIC MOTOR, ETC, - THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 6 TIMES BEFORE I COULD GET IT TO SURGE OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND PARK SAFELY. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL TRYING TO FORCE THE GAS ENGINE TO TAKE OVER AND THAT CAUSED AN ENGINE STUTTER AND AGAIN THE CAR TRIED EACH SOURCE OF POWER - I TURNED THE KEY OFF. UPON A RESTART IT WAS AS IF NOTHING WAS WRONG, IT RAN NORMALLY SO I RAN A FORD VEHICLE HEALTH REPORT (VHR) WHILE SITTING IN THE CAR IDLING, THAT REPORT IS SENT TO MY FORD OWNER'S ACCOUNT, I DID THIS TO TRY AND CATCH ANY ERRANT DTC'S (TROUBLE CODES). AFTER THAT I RESTARTED THE CAR INTO THE ENGINEERING TEST MODE TO SHOW MY DIGITAL DASH DISPLAY'S INTERNAL READINGS, NO DTC'S WERE PRESENT THERE EITHER. WE FINISHED OUR BUSINESS AND DROVE THE 20 MILES HOME WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS, ALL NORMAL. THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED AND IS A VERY UNSAFE SITUATION.

THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING WILL CUT OUT UNDER SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES AND THE CAR WILL FEEL LIKE IT IS LURCHING FORWARD INSTEAD OF SLOWING DOWN. THE SITUATION IS: BRAKING USING ONLY REGEN BRAKES, NO FRICTION BRAKES; STEADY PEDAL PRESSURE; GOING 15-20 MPH; TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL AT LEAST 90 DEGREES LEFT OR RIGHT; DRIVING ON SMOOTH PAVEMENT. DATA I HAVE LOGGED FROM THE SOBDMC INDICATES THAT THE TRACTION MOTOR BRIEFLY REDUCES ITS NEGATIVE TORQUE WHICH CAUSES THE CAR TO SURGE FORWARD. IN ONE INSTANCE THAT I LOGGED THE NEGATIVE TORQUE SHOWS AROUND 48 FT-LBS AND THEN SUDDENLY DROPS TO ABOUT 8 FT-LBS. THE TRACTION MOTOR THEN GRADUALLY INCREASES TORQUE BACK TO THE APPROPRIATE LEVEL. IN ANOTHER INSTANCE THE NEGATIVE TORQUE SUDDENLY WENT FROM ABOUT 28 FT-LBS TO 8 FT-LBS. THE DROP IN TORQUE OCCURS IN 1/10 OF ONE SECOND PER MY LOGGED DATA. IT TAKES ABOUT 2.5-3.0 SECONDS FOR THE TRACTION MOTOR TO RETURN TO THE APPROPRIATE LEVEL OF NEGATIVE TORQUE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THIS BEHAVIOR BEGAN OCCURRING RIGHT AFTER OUR VEHICLE WAS SERVICED BY A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP. THE WORK DONE BY THE FORD DEALERSHIP INCLUDED REPLACING THE 12V BATTERY & 3 RECALLS: 14S21, 15E03 & 15S14. I BELIEVE THAT THIS SERVICE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE PROBLEMS, AS THIS ISSUE WAS NOT PRESENT BEFORE OUR CAR WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP.

WE JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR 3 MONTHS AGO. 4 TIMES WITHIN THE LAST MONTH THE CAR SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL WHILE EITHER ON THE HIGHWAY OR GOING UP HILLS. ONCE IT SHIFTS INTO NEUTRAL THE ONLY THING WE CAN DO IS COAST TO A SAFE STOP, SHUT THE CAR OFF, AND WAIT A WHILE TO RESTART IT. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN YOU ARE GOING 70 + MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS THAT FORD VEHICLES ARE HAVING ALSO INCLUDES THE FUSION NOT JUST THE FOCUS AND FIESTA.
