Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  18. Engine and engine coolingDec 3, 2012

This is an update to a recently announced recall. Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines, as well as certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. Coolant system leaks may cause the engines to overheat and leak flammable engine fluids.

If flammable engine fluids come in contact with the vehicle’s hot exhaust system, a vehicle fire could occur.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine for coolant system leaks and reprogram the vehicle’s powertrain control module and instrument cluster with an updated calibration and overheat strategy software. There will be no charge to owners for this service. Owners were recently notified to contact dealers to arrange for alternative transportation as Ford developed a remedy. Owners will be shortly receiving notifications to contact Ford dealers to schedule the free remedy repair. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

  19. Exterior lighting, headlightsNov 30, 2012

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles, manufactured from February 3, 2012, through October 20, 2012, for failing to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." The affected vehicles may not have had the low beam headlamp projector coating properly cured during its manufacturing process.

An improperly cured projector coating will become hazy through operation, over time, reducing the brightness of the low-beam lamp. This may decrease driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headlamp assembly. The recall began on December 18, 2012. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

I WAS DRIVING SW BOUND ON HWY 20 IN LOGANVILLE, GA WHEN MY CAR SURGED AND POWERED OFF AT 50 MPH 'THE VEHICLE TURNED OFF ON A VERY BUSY ROAD. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR LAST YEAR. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED THIS FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED FORD REPLACED MY ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN. I HAD ZERO STEERING CAPABILITY, THE ENGINE WAS OFF AND UNRESPONSIVE AND ALL OF MY ELECTRONIC PANELS WENT DARK EXCEPT FOR A MESSAGE SAYING "TRANSMISSION IS NOT IN PARK" AND THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT (YELLOW) CAME ON. I WAS ABLE TO HIT THE HAZARD LIGHTS AND BARELY INCH TO THE RIGHT SIDE ON THE HIGHWAY. THERE WAS A TRUCK BEHIND ME THAT HAD TO MAKE AN EVASIVE LANGE CHANGE MANEUVER TO THE LEFT IN ORDER TO AVOID COLLISION. ONCE I CAME TO A STOP I IMMEDIATELY TURNED MY VIDEO CAMERA ON MY PHONE AND STARTED DOCUMENTING WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE VEHICLE. I HAVE THIS VIDEO READILY AVAILABLE FOR YOU IF YOU NEED IT TO FURTHER YOUR INVESTIGATION. *TR

"STOP SAFELY NOW" ERROR. THE DRIVETRAIN DISENGAGED PREVENTING DRIVE OR REVERSE FROM WORKING. ON 7/26/14 I DROVE 1 HOUR, PARKED, TURNED CAR OFF AND "REMOVED THE IGNITION KEY" THEN THE INTERIOR AIR CONDITIONING BLOWER/FAN TURNED ON FULL AS IF THE DEFROSTER WAS ON. THE TOUCH SCREEN LCD REMAINED ON AS WELL. PRESSING THE CLIMATE CONTROL BUTTONS ON EITHER THE LCD OR THE CONSOLE HAD NO AFFECT. I INSERTED THE KEY AND STARTED THE CAR AGAIN SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT CHANGE. THE INTERIOR AIR CONDITIONER BLOWER/FAN CONTINUED TO RUN. I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THE CAR WOULD ACTUALLY DRIVE SO I PULLED FORWARD OUT OF THE PARKING SPACE WHEN THE "STOP SAFELY NOW" LIGHT APPEARED AND THE DRIVETRAIN DISENGAGED PREVENTING DRIVE OR REVERSE FROM WORKING. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO ROLL THE CAR BACK TO THE PARKING SPACE SAFELY. I REPEATED THIS PROCESS SEVERAL TIMES AND EVERY TIME THE DRIVETRAIN DISENGAGED WITHIN ABOUT 3 TO 5 SECONDS PREVENTING ANY FORWARD OR REVERSE MOVEMENT. HAD THIS HAPPENED ON A HIGHWAY I JUST DROVE IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A LIFE THREATENING ACCIDENT. LOCKED AND LEFT THE CAR SIT FOR 5 HOURS. CAME BACK TO THE CAR AND IT WORKED NORMALLY FOR A 1 HOUR DRIVE HOME. CALLED DEALERSHIP AND SCHEDULED DIAGNOSTIC. A SECOND ISSUE THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE RELATED OCCURRED AFTER AN OIL CHANGE AND REPLACEMENT OF A PURGE VALUE ASSEMBLY 1 MONTH AGO. THE ISSUE THAT STARTED IS THE ENGINE ENGAGES REGARDLESS OF THE VEHICLE MODE OR OPERATION. EVEN WHEN SET TO FULL ELECTRIC AND PARKED WITH NO ACCESSORIES RUNNING, THE MOTOR TURNS ON AT A HIGH IDLE AND REMAINS ON. A FIRMWARE UPDATE PARTIALLY RESOLVED THE MOTOR RUNNING CONSTANTLY AS NOW IT RUNS A LITTLE MORE THAN 50% OF THE TIME FOR NO REASON AND AT A HIGH IDLE. THERE WERE NO ISSUES DURING THE 10 MONTHS PRIOR TO NEEDING THE PURGE VALVE ASSEMBLY AND SUBSEQUENT ISSUES APPEARING. *TR

VEHICLE PUSHED BY DO-GOODERS TO BERM. THIRD OCCURRENCE WITH THIS VEHICLE, DEALERSHIP REPAIR ATTEMPTS HAVE NOT CORRECTED. *TR

TRAVELING HOME AT 35MPH, VEHICLE LURCHED AND LOST POWER - WAS ABLE TO DRIVE 15 MPH MAX SPEED THE 3 MILES HOME, BUT VEHICLE BARELY ACCELERATED AFTER SLOWING OR STOPPING. POWER TRAIN LIGHT AND AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. AS VEHICLE DRIVEN INTO GARAGE, DASHBOARD LIGHTING WENT OFF SUDDENLY, BUT VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITH EFFORT INTO GARAGE. FOUR HOURS LATER AT 10PM, STARTED VEHICLE, NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON DASH. MORNING OF DECEMBER 10, CALLED DEALERSHIP. THEY ADVISED IF THE LIGHT DID NOT COME ON THIS MORNING, THEN THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE PROBLEM. VEHICLE DROVE NORMALLY TO WORK WITH NO WARNING LIGHTS. DEALERSHIP SAID THERE WAS LOW VOLTAGE ON THE ACCELERATOR CAUSING PROBLEM AND THEY ORDERED PARTS AND "FIXED" IT ON DECEMBER 18TH, BUT ON DECEMBER 24TH, I WAS ON INTERSTATE AT 55 MPH, VEHICLE ON CRUISE CONTROL. SPEED LIMIT INCREASED TO 60MPH, BEGAN ADJUSTING CRUISE CONTROL SPEED VIA THUMB BUTTON ON STEERING WHEEL COLUMN. AFTER THREE THUMB "CLICKS" TO 58MPH, VEHICLE LURCHED AND LOST POWER AND BEGAN IMMEDIATELY DECELERATING. POWER TRAIN LIGHT AND AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. PULLED TO RIGHT BERM AND SHUT OFF ENGINE. OVER THE NEXT 37 MINUTES, ATTEMPTED TO START VEHICLE EVERY 5-6 MINUTES. ON SIX DIFFERENT ATTEMPTS, THE VEHICLE REVVED AS ACCELERATOR APPLIED BUT THE ENGINE NEVER "CAUGHT" OR TURNED OVER, IT WOULD DIE AS SOON AS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL RELEASED. ON 7TH ATTEMPT, THE VEHICLE TURNED OVER, AND I WAS ABLE TO PROCEED TO THE NEXT EXIT. SINCE THE CAR SEEMED TO BE RUNNING NORMALLY, I RISKED IT AND TRIED TO GET THE VEHICLE HOME, KNOWING THAT A TOW AT 8PM ON CHRISTMAS EVE WOULD BE EXPENSIVE AND TIMELY. THE POWER TRAIN LIGHT AND AIRBAG LIGHT REMAINED ON FOR THE 8 MILE TRIP HOME. THE NEXT DAY, VEHICLE OPERATED "NORMALLY" WITH NO POWER TRAIN LIGHT OR AIRBAG LIGHT. SECOND OCCURRENCE. *TR

I DRIVE A 2013 FORD FUSION, WHICH I PURCHASED NEW FROM AN AUTHORIZED FORD DEALERSHIP. BY 3772 MILES, THE CAR BEGAN TO DOWNSHIFT VIOLENTLY, UPSHIFT AROUND 6 OR 7 THOUSAND RPMS, NOT SHIFT AT ALL, THE HEATED SEAT WOULD COME ON BY THEMSELVES WITH NO INDICATOR LIGHTS, THE TRANSMISSION GEAR INDICATOR LIGHT STAYS ON WHEN THE CAR IS OFF AND NO KEY INSIDE, THE RADIO TURNS ON AND OFF AT WILL WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED AND LOCKED UP, A SEVERE ODOR OF MILDEW COMES FROM THE A/C WHEN FIRST COMES ON, THE TRIM MOLDING KEEPS COMING OFF, THE CAR HAS LOST A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF POWER, THE LED LIGHTS IN THE TAIL LIGHTS STAY ON ALL NIGHT EVEN AFTER THE CAR IS TURNED OFF, AND ETC. THESE PROBLEMS ARE INCONSISTENT IN NATURE WITH NO IDENTIFIABLE CONDITIONS CAUSING THE SERIES OF NON-CONFORMITIES. FORD MOTOR COMPANY HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIX THE CAR AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS. I AM CURRENTLY IN ARBITRATION. *TR

I HAD DRIVEN ABOUT TWO BLOCKS FROM A PARKING LOT AND WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. AFTER THE LIGHT CHANGED, I STARTED ACROSS THE INTERSECTION AND ALL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS (INCLUDING MOTOR DRIVE) SHUTDOWN HALFWAY ACROSS. MY IPOD 4S WAS CONNECTED TO THE MYFORD TOUCH SYSTEM VIA USB CABLE, AND IT SHOWED THE APPLE LOGO, SUGGESTING THAT IT HAD BEEN ISSUED A REBOOT COMMAND. HAD TO PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN PARK AND RESTART THE ENGINE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION TO CONTINUE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING TO AN APPOINTMENT, AND RAN LATE BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE. I STOPPED AT A STOPLIGHT, AND TRIED TO TAKE OFF, BUT THEN THE CAR WENT INTO "LIMP HOME" MODE. I HOBBLED THE CAR ACROSS THE INTERSECTION, AND THEN BEGAN TO USE MY OBD II CODE READER THAT I PURCHASED FOR A DIFFERENT VEHICLE, AND READ THE CODE. IT WAS P2011, AND CLEARED IT THE CAR RAN FINE FOR A WHILE, BUT THE PROBLEM WAS STILL THERE. I WENT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY, PURCHASED THE NEW "UPDATED" THROTTLE BODY. I GOT IT OVER TO MY UNCLE'S SHOP, WERE I REPLACED THE OLD THROTTLE BODY WITH THE NEW ONE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING WITH THE NEW THROTTLE BODY, AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE. *TR

APPROXIMATELY AFTER 10 MINUTES OF DRIVING, THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN AND THE ELECTRIC MOTOR GOT STUCK AT ABOUT HALF ITS POWER (ACCORDING TO THE DISPLAY ON THE DASHBOARD). THE FRONT AIR BAG MALFUNCTION LIGHT WAS ON (THIS HAD HAPPENED 3 TIMES BEFORE DURING THE PAST TWO WEEKS), THE "HILL ASSIST OFF" LIGHT TURNED ON, AND A LARGE WARNING MESSAGE CAME UP ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DASHBOARD. THE VEHICLE HAD VERY LITTLE POWER, I MANAGED TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PULLED OVER IN A PARKING LOT. PARKED AND TURNED THE IGNITION OFF, WAITED A MINUTE AND STARTED THE VEHICLE. IT WORKED NORMAL FOR THE REST OF THE DRIVE (5 MORE MILES). THE NEXT MORNING, THE FRONT AIR BAG MALFUNCTION LIGHT CAME UP AGAIN AFTER 4 OR 5 MILES OF DRIVE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. *TR

  15. Power train, Engine, Dec 14, 2012

WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY ROAD WITH MY FOOT ON THE GAS AT 35-40MPH, THE TRANSMISSION ERRATICALLY SHIFTED INTO A LOWER GEAR ON THE TRANSMISSION, CAUSING THE ENGINE RPMS TO NEAR INSTANTANEOUSLY TO GO FROM 1750-2000RPMS TO JUST OVER 4000RPMS. THROUGH THE RPM INCREASE THE VEHICLE MAINTAINED THE PREVIOUS 35-40MPH SPEED. ULTIMATELY, WAS FORCED TO BRAKE TO BRING THE ENGINE RPMS DOWN. *TR
