Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. The affected vehicles may not have had the low beam headlamp projector coating properly cured during its manufacturing process.

An improperly cured projector coating will become hazy through operation, over time, reducing the brightness of the low-beam lamp. This may decrease driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headlamp assembly. The recall began on December 18, 2012. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

Consumer stated complaint can be closed problem was with the power steering.

  3. Steering, Jan 14, 2022

The steering locked up 2 times. Had I been driving when this happened it could have caused a serious accident. The problem has not been inspected by anyone at this time. I received a Steering Assist Malfunction message both times when starting my vehicle. After shutting the car off and waiting a little while and then starting the car back up the message is no longer there and the steering seems to be fine. But again if this happens when Im driving it, it could result in a serious accident.

  4. Steering, Jan 12, 2022

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 MPH, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated that the “Power Steering Disabled” message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where it was diagnosed with needing the power steering control module replaced however, the vehicle was not repaired. 5. Steering, Jan 10, 2022

2.when it came on this time it said “Power steering assist fault” see manual then shut completely off on me. I cranked it back up and it ran for about 30 seconds and shut off again. I cranked it up again and the wrench illuminated and stayed on so I drove it home and parked it Sunday. Now I am bringing it in to you all. It seems to be some serious power/electric issues going on with this car.

  6. Steering, Jan 7, 2022

Recall issued by Ford 15S14 stating "If the bolts corrode, the steering gear motor may detach from the gear housing resulting in a loss of power steering assist. Loss of power steering assist would require a higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may increase the risk of a crash." This recall was performed July 8th 2015 at Twin Hills Ford dealership at approximately 30k miles. This exact same problem has happened again at approximately 60k miles and though talking with Ford they will not admit fault to a poorly designed steering motor with an identically poorly designed safety recall solution. This is a safety issue that I feel I should not have to pay upwards of 2500 to repair. Especially after the "solution to the safety hazard" has been performed. This issue puts others in danger and was not adequately resolved.

  7. Steering, Dec 13, 2021

Went to turn the car on and the message "power steering assist fault" kept blinking on the dashboard. Luckily wasn't driving or this could have turned into an accident. Sat in the car for a couple minutes and turned the car off and on. Message didn't appear again, but I'm nervous to drive longer distances than the 6 mile trip from my place of work to my house. I've read that there is a recall on other fusions in the same year as mine. However, I don't know if the VIN is included. I think they need to 1.) send out a notice to all fusions of that year for a recall and 2.) include other VINs in this recall. I now am nervous about driving this car and I plan on having this looked at by a Ford Dealership promptly. Please get this addressed.

  8. Steering, Dec 11, 2021

Drove my car to work just fine and my wife got in it to go home and power steering assist fault light came on looked it up and found out that are vin is not recalled looked up how to fix it and there was at least 200 people that has the same issues that’s a lot more then the 23 recalls for that car

  9. Steering, Dec 4, 2021

While driving, the vehicle flashed the "Service Power Steering" warning. After arriving at my next destination and restarting the vehicle, the alert changed to "Service Power Steering Now", and the power steering became completely unresponsive. According to the dealership, the power steering assist has failed and the entire rack and pinion assembly will need to be replaced, a roughly $2000 repair. After doing some research, this issue has resulted in recalls on other Fords, including Fusions, within the same year model, but not my specific VIN. And judging from the other feedback on NHTSA I'm not alone. It's quite apparent the recall needs to be expanded to include this model.

  10. Steering, Dec 1, 2021

Car was parked in the driveway and when started after 4 days, a message came "Active Power Steering Assist Fault". Steering became too hard to operate. This could have happened while driving and would have resulted in a collision. There are recalls for the same issue for 2013 Fusions but not my VIN. I think this recall should be expanded to include more VINs as I am reading similar complaints. Vehicle only has 72000 miles on it.

  11. Steering, Nov 3, 2021

November 1, 2021 I noticed that all of a sudden the warning light for power steering came on. I managed to get the car to the house and now the steering is locked. I have no remedy. I have been nervous about the car every since. I need my car repaired. The warning should come before all out failure! That’s not a warning it’s an ambush!!

  12. Steering, Nov 1, 2021

The contact's daughter owns a 2013 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, excessive force was needed to steer the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V632000 (Steering) which he linked to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

  13. Steering, Oct 19, 2021

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH in the rain, the vehicle inadvertently lost power steering functionality. The power steering assist warning light illuminated and the message to "Pull Over" appeared on the instrument panel. The contact stated she veered to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. The contact restarted the vehicle, but the power steering warning light remained illuminated. The contact stated she was able to continue to drive the vehicle at a lower speed and manually steer the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V250000 (Steering) because the VIN was not included in the recall. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that she would be responsible for the cost of diagnosis and repair of the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 107,000.

  14. Steering, Oct 19, 2021

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while his girlfriend was driving at an undisclosed speed, the power steering assist warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact stated that assistance was needed for the driver to steer the vehicle into a parking space. The driver restarted the vehicle however, the vehicle did not regain power steering functionality. The vehicle remained in the parking space. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 94,000.

While driving on the interstate, the power steering on the car suddenly stopped working and has not come on since. This was a major issue as I was driving 80 mph on the interstate and had trouble steering after it gave out. After taking this to the Ford Dealership I was told that it would be a $3,100 fix. There were not any warning signs before this event and the car had been in perfect condition.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the power steering failed to operate as designed. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the EPAS gear failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 79,000.

The steering wheel attachment bolt has not maintained torque. As a result, the steering wheel has loosened over time. I fear the steering wheel may separate from the steering column shaft, increasing the risk of a crash while driving.

Vehicle suddenly lost power steering and warning messages appeared about "steering assist fault" and "service AdvanceTrac". Dealer diagnosed the issue as a failed electric power steering rack but claimed the issue was not covered by recalls. These two Ford recalls appear to describe the exact scenario: 19S26 (19V-632) & 15S14 (15V-250)

While on vacation in NW Ohio my power assist failure light came on and I lost my power steering. It was terribly hard to turn and scared me. My sister looked up to see if there were recalls on my 2013 Ford Fusion SE for this problem as we were together and found 17 recalls and over 1500 complaints for this same car year and problem but my VIN was not listed. My VIN needs to be included and I should be reimbursed. This malfunction happened on Sat afternoon July 17, 2021. I got my car into Taylor Kia dealership on Monday on July 19, 2021. My friend is the Sales Mgr. there and got my car in and gave me a loaner to use. they checked for recalls too but none found. It had to be fixed so I told the service dept to go ahead. While the car was there when I had to return home I had them put my back brakes and rotors on and 2 filters I needed. The first assembly parts were damaged and had to reorder. That came in Monday July 26 and repairs were made and finished July 27. I wasn't able to get back up until Friday to exchange the loaner for my car. I had them bag up the bad rack and pinion and brought it home in case you or Ford need it to validate this power steering failure for recall.

I was driving my car and my power steering assist fault came on and the steering wheel locked up. If I would have been turning at the time I would have wrecked. The vehicle had to be towed to the Ford dealership. Since I have on the car the light has came on a couple times but immediately turns off. It is at the dealership where they are telling me it is $2400 to fix.

Vehicle sporadically (more so on cool/cold mornings) receives an error light on the dash indicating problem with power steering/traction control and hill assist. When this occurs, vehicle loses power steering. Very dangerous if unexpected and traveling at higher speeds. Ford is aware of this problem and has issued TSBs. Does there have to be fatalities and law suits before something is done? Consumer should not have to pay $2200+ to repair a problem occurring across multiple vehicle years and models.

Last night when I got in my car to come home from work. When I turned on my car I got this message "Steering Locked Pull Over Safely". My Mother researched what would cause that to come up. One of the problems that she found was low tire pressure. She went around and checked all the tires and they where inflated to the right PSI. She even made sure that there was no screws or nails that would cause then to go flat. She also hooked up the ODB-2 Scanner to the car to make sure that it wasn't what was causing the issue. There wasn't any codes that popped up. We unhooked the battery and left it unhooked about 30 minutes that didn't correct the issue either. When she called the Ford dealer by our house they told me it would cost me around $2000.00 To fix the issue. What should i do about this issue since i don't have that kind of money to fix this problem?

Power Steering went out, jerked steering wheel. Vehicle no longer has steering. My VIN is not part of the recall like other models. Vehicle is now a lawn ornament.

Power sreering failure. No warning. Just randomly occurs. Steering wheel locks up and driver in unable to steer the car. HUGE safety issue! Seems ti be a common problem after researching the Internet.
