Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

The rearview camera may display a distorted, intermittent, or blank image when the vehicle is in reverse.

A rearview camera that fails to properly display an image can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and replace the rearview camera as necessary, free of charge. This will be a phased campaign, with the remedy becoming available in different phases based on model and model years. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on October 25, 2025. Additional letters will be mailed once the final remedy is available on each phase. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015 Fiesta, 2016 Fusion, and 2016 Lincoln MKZ vehicles sold, or ever registered in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A component inside the door latches may break, which can make it difficult to latch or possibly allow the doors to open while driving.

Vehicle doors opening unexpectedly while driving can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will inspect the door latch date codes and if necessary, replace all four side door latches, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 20, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S15. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 20V-177.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles. The front brake hoses may rupture and leak brake fluid.

A brake fluid leak will increase brake pedal travel and extend the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the front brake hoses, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 27, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S12.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Fiesta, 2014-2016 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles sold, or ever registered in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and Ford or Lincoln dealers will replace the side door latches, free of charge. The recall began September 21, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S15.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015-2016 Ford Edge, and 2016 Lincoln MKX vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Road salt or other contaminants may corrode the electric power steering gear motor attachment bolts.

If the bolts corrode, the steering gear motor may detach from the gear housing resulting in a loss of power steering assist, requiring a greater steering effort, especially at lower speeds, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gear motor bolts and apply a wax sealer. If any of the steering gear motor attachment bolts are broken or missing, a new steering gear will be installed in the vehicle. These repairs will be performed free of charge. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles equipped with 2.5 liter engines. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. The recall began September 10, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. In the event of a crash, heat from the deployment of a seat belt pretensioner may cause a front seat belt anchor cable to fail.

If the driver or front passenger seatbelt cables cannot properly restrain the front seat occupants, they would be at an increased risk of injury.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will apply a protective coating to the seat belt cable, free of charge. The recall began May 16, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S42.

  12. Seat belts, front, anchorageApr 27, 2016

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2016 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured from March 10, 2016, through March 16, 2016. The front driver seat track assembly's rear riser may have been improperly welded to the seat track rail, and as a result, the driver may not be adequately restrained in a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 207, "Seating Systems" and 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."

An improperly welded driver seat riser may fail to adequately restrain the driver during crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Ford quarantined the affected vehicles at dealerships prior to their sale. Dealers will replace the front driver seat track rail, free of charge. The recall began on May 19, 2016. Ford's number for this recall is 16C05.

COOLANT LEAKS INTO ENGINE INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING THE CAR SHOOK AND VIBRATED. SPEEDEE MECHANIC FOUND THE ISSUE AND TOLD ME TAKE IT TO FORD AS IT IS THE SAME ISSUE AS FORD RECALLS ON FUSION, AND COULD CAUSE A FIRE. TOOK IT FORD, FIRST THEY SAID NO COOLANT LEAK. A WEEK LATER I TOOK IT BACK THEN THEY SAID YES COOLANT IS LEAKING INTO ENGINE AND I HAVE TO PAY FOR A NEW ENGINE.

WHEN I GOT HOME FROM PICKING MY FRIEND'S DAUGHTER UP FROM SCHOOL YESTERDAY, I PULLED INTO THE GARAGE AND TRIED TO PLACE MY VEHICLE IN PARK. AS MY SHIFTER WENT PAST REVERSE IT TURNED ON THE BACK UP CAMERA ON AND STAYED IN REVERSE EVEN THOUGH MY SHIFTER WAS IN PARK. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, I COULDN'T LET OFF THE BRAKE BECAUSE IT CONTINUED TO BACK UP WHEN I DID, SO I PUT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. THIS COULD HAVE ENDED A LOT WORSE. IF IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED WHILE I WAS PICKING MY FRIEND'S DAUGHTER UP FROM SCHOOL, THERE WERE KIDS EVERYWHERE AND I MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STOP MY VEHICLE. MY CAR IS A 2016 FORD FUSION TITANIUM, FORD ISSUED A RECALL NUMBERED 18S20 FOR SHIFTER CABLE BUSHINGS GOING BAD IN FORD FUSIONS BETWEEN 2013 AND 2016. I CALLED FORD BUT APPARENTLY MY CARS VIN DOESN'T QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH THE EXACT ISSUE THAT THEY ISSUED THE RECALL FOR, HAPPENED TO MY CAR AND MY CAR IS BETWEEN THOSE YEARS LISTED. THE SHIFTER CABLE CAME OFF AND DIDN'T ALLOW MY CAR TO GO INTO PARK. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY WHEN THIS OCCURRED.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD FUSION. AFTER LEAVING THE OFFICE AND WALKING TO THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT HEARD MUSIC PLAYING IN THE VEHICLE EVEN THOUGH THE KEYS WERE ON HER PERSON AND THE VEHICLE WAS STILL LOCKED. ADDITIONALLY, ON OCCASION, THE AIR CONDITIONER, LIGHTING, AND RADIO WOULD ACTIVATE INDEPENDENTLY WITH THE IGNITION IN THE OFF POSITION AND THE DOORS LOCKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO KOONS FORD OF BALTIMORE (LOCATED AT 6970 SECURITY BLVD, WINDSOR MILL, MD 21244, (410) 298-3800) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO SEVERE BATTERY DRAINAGE. ALSO, THE WATER PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE BATTERY AND WATER PUMP WERE REPLACED, AND THE POWER TRAIN CONTROL MODULE WAS UPDATED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURES RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,084. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

TAKATA RECALL, LOUD HUMMING/ VIBRATION NOISE APPEARS TO BE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH REAR OF VEHICLE. FIRST STARTED WHILE DRIVING ON THE STREET, PULLED OVER TO CHECK AND IT WAS WHEN THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN BACK ON, ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON, AFTER THIS THE KEY FOB PUSH TO START HAS NOT BEEN WORKING AND EVERY TIME YOU PUMP GAS THE ENGINE HAS PROBLEMS TURNING ON, ONLY TURNS ON AFTER PRESSING THE GAS.

  5. Engine, May 21, 2019

WHILE IN MOTION (65 MPH) THE VEHICLES ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY FAILED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ENTER AN EMERGENCY MODE IN WHICH THE RPMS WERE FIXED AT APPROXIMATELY 1.2K. THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE WAS LOST COMPLETELY AND THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE COASTED OFF OF THE HIGHWAY. AN IMMEDIATE RESTART OF THE ENGINE DID NOT REMEDY THE ISSUE, BUT AFTER LEAVING THE VEHICLE OFF FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY THE ISSUE WAS RESOLVED, ALLOWING FOR FULL USE OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE INCIDENT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY HAD "FAILED" AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I KNOW THAT FORD HAS HAD AN ISSUE ON OLDER YEAR THROTTLE BODIES AND THAT A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THOSE. I AM HOPING THAT THESE NEWER VEHICLES WILL BE LOOKED AT, AND IF THE ISSUE IS STILL PREVALENT THE RECALL CHANGED TO INCLUDE THEM.

RICHMOND FORD LINCOLN (4600 W BROAD ST, RICHMOND, VA 23230, (804) 358-5521) WAS NOTIFIED SHORTLY AFTER THE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE, BUT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE OR DETERMINE THE CAUSE. THE LAST TIME THE VEHICLE STALLED, AN OFF DUTY OFFICER HAD TO ASSIST WITH MANEUVERING THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD WITH A DISABLED PASSENGER AND CHILD PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE NOT AVAILABLE.

  8. Other or unspecified, Engine, Apr 11, 2019

PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND IT PROCEEDED TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE. HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BREAK TO STOP CAR FROM MOVING. AFTER THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT START AND IT WAS TOWED TO DEALER. IT SHOULD BE NOTED MY CAR WAS AT THE DEALER FOR MONTHS FOR THE SAME CAR AND THEY STATED THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED.

  9. Engine, Mar 27, 2019

IN MAY OF 2017 MY TRANSMISSION WAS CAUSING MY CAR TO JERK FORWARD SEVERELY WHEN EVER I TRIED TO PUT ON THE GAS. A FORD DEALERSHIP REPLACED/FIXED MY TRANSMISSION WHICH WAS UNDER WARRANTEE AT THE TIME. NOW, LESS THEN 2 YEARS LATER AND 22,000 MILES LATER THE EXACT SAME THING IS HAPPENING AGAIN. I BROUGHT IT TO A MACHINIC WHO SAID TO FIX IT, THEY WOULD HAVE TO BASICALLY DO THE EXACT SAME THING THE FORD DEALERSHIP DID TO FIX IT BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION IS SHOT! NOW I AM JUST OUT OF WARRANTEE I HAVE TO FOOT THE BILL. IT WAS BAD ENOUGH NEEDING A NEW TRANSMISSION JUST A YEAR AFTER GETTING THE CAR, BUT THEN NEEDING ANOTHER NEW TRANSMISSION LESS THEN 2 YEARS LATER IS NOT RIGHT? FORD HAD BEEN NO HELP!

  10. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Mar 18, 2019

TWO DAYS AFTER GETTING GAS MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. IT STAYED ON FOR ABOUT A WEE AND TURNED OFF. THIS KEPT HAPPENING EVERYTIME I GOT GAS S I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD SOMETIMES THE CAP STICKS AND IT'S A COMMON THING THAT DOESNT REQUIRE ANY REPAIRS AND THEY RESET IT. THIS HAPPENED FOR ALMOST A YEAR. I TOOK IT BACK AND THIS TIME THEY CLAIM I NEEDED A NEW VAPOR MANAGEMENT VALVE. OF COURSE MY CAR IS LESS THAN 36,000 MILES BUT THE 3 YEARS ARE UP AS OF TWO MONTHS AGO. I CALLED FORD AND THEY SAID IT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE I HAD THE PROBLEM BEFORE THE 3 YEARS. WHEN I GET TO THE DEALERSHIP TO PICK UP MY CAR THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. I CALL FORD BACK AND ASK THEM TO SEND AN AUTHORIZATION NUMBER TO THE DEALERSHIP AND NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN IT'S NOT UNDER WARRANTY.

FORD FUSION ENERGI, DID ITS LOW POWERED STATE AGAIN, THIS TIME ON THE FREE WAY, DROPPING RAPIDLY FROM 75MPH TO 22MPH AND BARELY ABLE TO MAINTAIN THAT SPEED. THE DISPLAY SHOWED THE SAFETY FEATURES BECOMING DEACTIVATED. SOMETHING NEW THOUGH, THE HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE CONSOLE DIMMED AND WAS BARELY READABLE, I TURNED ON MY HAZARDS AND I HOPE THEY WHERE WORKING, EITHER WAY I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO AVOID A REAR END COLLISION AND GOT THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD. THIS ABOUT 7TH TIME FORD WILL WORK ON THE VEHICLE, AND ANOTHER WEEK OR MORE WITHOUT A VEHICLE, WAITING FOR THE NEXT AVAILABLE APPOINTMENT. THESE FUSIONS ARE BECOMING THE NEW FORD PINTO. I REALLY HOPE THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TO DIE, BEFORE FORD IS FORCED TO RECALL THESE DEATH TRAPS.

WHEN I PUT GAS IN THE CAR, IT IS VERY HARD TO START. I HAVE TO PUMP THE GAS AND THEN REV THE ENGINE TO GET IT TO STAY ON. IF I LEAVE IT IN PARK, WITHOUT REVING THE ENGINE, IT WILL STALL OUT. ONCE I GET IT INTO DRIVE AND START MOVING, THE PROBLEM SUBSIDES. THE ONLY OTHER TIME I NOTICE IT, IS IF I AM IDLING ON A HILL. AT THAT POINT, IT WILL STALL WITHOUT CONSTANT FEATHERING OF THE GAS PEDAL. AFTER PUMPING GAS MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. AFTER WAITING AND TRYING FOR 10 MINUTES THE VEHICLE STARTED. ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER WHILE DRIVING A LOUD NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF MY VEHICLE AFTER PULLING OVER I REALIZED IT WAS COMING FROM MY GAS TANK TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THAT THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD THAT BEFORE BUT THEY KNEW HOW TO STOP THE NOISE. WHILE DRIVING AND AT A STOP LIGHT MY VEHICLE JUST SHUT OFF WITH NO VEHICLES BEHIND ME, II PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND IT WENT IN REVERSE AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL MY VEHICLE CLOSER TO THE CURB. COUPLE DAYS LATER MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CODE WAS FOR A CANISTER PURGE VALVE. I SEE FORD HAD A RECALL IN 2015 FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE PREVIOUS MODELS. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN AND I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE I JUST PURCHASED MY VEHICLE ON MARCH 31, 2016 AND THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED IT FROM WAS NOT HELPFUL AND FORD DID NOTHING.

ON MONDAY OCTOBER 1,2018 AT 8 AM I DROVE MY KIDS TO SCHOOL, WENT TO THE GROCERY STORE, AND GAS STATION. MY CAR DROVE FINE. BY 11:00 AM I'M LEAVING HOME HEADING TO WORK AND WHILE IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD DRIVING 25 MPH MY CAR LOST ACCELERATION, BEGAN TO JERK, SHAKE REALLY BAD, AND SHUT OFF. I TURNED IT BACK ON. IT SHOOK AGAIN AND SHUT OFF. I MANAGED TO TURN THE CAR BACK ON AND SLOW ROLL INTO A PARKING SPACE. I WAITED 5 MINS STARTED THE CAR AND SLOWLY DROVE IT BACK HOME. WHEN PULLING INTO MY SPACE. THE CAR LOST ACCELERATION AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD NOT PRESS DOWN. I COULD NOT BRAKE!!!! THE CAR SHUT OFF. WHILE HAVING IT INSPECTED, I STARTED IT AND NOW WHITE SMOKE COMES OUT OF THE TAILPIPE. I DRIVE THE TURNPIKE AT 80 MPH TO GET TO WORK. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. THE CAR WOULDN'T ACCELERATE AND I COULDN'T BRAKE. I COULD HAVE LOST MY LIFE. WHAT IF I HAD MY KIDS WITH ME AND WE GOT IN A BAD ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THIS??? THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR ON APRIL 7, 2018. I'VE ONLY HAD IT 6 MONTHS AND HAD THE MAINTENANCE DONE ON IT IN JUNE. I JUST NOW NEED AN OIL CHANGE. I ONLY HAVE 66,611 MILES ON IT. I BOUGHT THE CAR AT 49,000 MILES.

VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, 12 MPH. HUSBAND MADE A LEFT TURN FROM ALMOST A STOPPING POSITION. HE PROCEEDED ABOUT ONE FOOT AND THE ENGINE STOPPED AFTER IT SPUTTERED EXTREMELY AND MADE A LOUD NOISE. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSE WHEN HE HIT THE GAS PEDAL. THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. IT WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS IT HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED WITH A WRENCH AND MESSAGE TO CHECK THE MANUAL. I TOOK THE CAR TO JERRY'S FORD ALEXANDRIA AND THEY SAID THE THROTTLE BODY HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THE COMPUTER REPROGRAMMED. COST WAS $610. THEY DISCOUNTED THE PRICE TO $510 AND THREW IN A FREE OIL CHANGE AND DETAILING WHICH WAS AWESOME. I HAVE READ ONLINE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER 2016 FORD FUSIONS AND WONDERED WHY FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE OR AT LEAST INFORM OWNERS TO BEWARE. . CAR HAS ABOUT 46,800 MILES ON IT AS I BOUGHT IT JUNE 2015.
