Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

  2. Back over prevention, sensing system, cameraOct 13, 2025

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2019 Flex, 2015 Explorer, Lincoln MKT, Lincoln MKZ, 2015-2016 C-Max, Escape, Taurus, 2016 Fusion, 2018-2019 Taurus, 2019 Lincoln MKT, Fiesta, and 2020 Mustang vehicles. The rearview camera may display a distorted, intermittent, or blank image when the vehicle is in reverse.

A rearview camera that fails to properly display an image can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and replace the rearview camera as necessary, free of charge. This will be a phased campaign, with the remedy becoming available in different phases based on model and model years. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on October 25, 2025. Additional letters will be mailed once the final remedy is available on each phase. 3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchNov 17, 2023

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015 Fiesta, 2016 Fusion, and 2016 Lincoln MKZ vehicles sold, or ever registered in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A component inside the door latches may break, which can make it difficult to latch or possibly allow the doors to open while driving.

Vehicle doors opening unexpectedly while driving can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will inspect the door latch date codes and if necessary, replace all four side door latches, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 20, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S15. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 20V-177.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles. The front brake hoses may rupture and leak brake fluid.

A brake fluid leak will increase brake pedal travel and extend the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the front brake hoses, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 27, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S12.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. 6. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchMar 23, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Fiesta, 2014-2016 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles sold, or ever registered in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and Ford or Lincoln dealers will replace the side door latches, free of charge. The recall began September 21, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S15.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015-2016 Ford Edge, and 2016 Lincoln MKX vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Road salt or other contaminants may corrode the electric power steering gear motor attachment bolts.

If the bolts corrode, the steering gear motor may detach from the gear housing resulting in a loss of power steering assist, requiring a greater steering effort, especially at lower speeds, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gear motor bolts and apply a wax sealer. If any of the steering gear motor attachment bolts are broken or missing, a new steering gear will be installed in the vehicle. These repairs will be performed free of charge. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles equipped with 2.5 liter engines. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. The recall began September 10, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2016 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured from March 10, 2016, through March 16, 2016. The front driver seat track assembly's rear riser may have been improperly welded to the seat track rail, and as a result, the driver may not be adequately restrained in a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 207, "Seating Systems" and 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."

An improperly welded driver seat riser may fail to adequately restrain the driver during crash, increasing the risk of injury.

  1. Service brakes, Sep 11, 2018

THE STOPLIGHT SWITCH, WHICH TURNS ON AND OFF THE BRAKE LIGHTS, IS ACTIVATED BY A RUBBER GROMMET/BUSHING/PAD WHICH IS INSERTED INTO A HOLE ON THE BRAKE ARM ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS PART DETERIORATED AND BROKE INTO LITTLE PIECES AND FELL OUT OF PLACE. WITHOUT IT IN PLACE, THE STOPLIGHT SWITCH DOES NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY, AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE CONSTANTLY ON. THE VEHICLE IS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD AND HAS LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS UNKNOWN WHEN THIS OCCURRED, HOWEVER IT WAS NOTICED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. FURTHER YET, FORD DOES NOT OFFER THIS BUMPER AS A SPARE PART, NOR DO THEY EVEN KNOW THE PART NUMBER, FORCING ME TO RETROFIT THE VEHICLE WITH AN AFTERMARKET PART. I WOULD ASSUME THE THICKNESS OF THE PAD IS CRITICAL TO RELIABLE BRAKE LIGHT OPERATION, SO I WILL BE FORCED TO MAKE A RISKY MODIFICATION.

  2. Electrical system, Air bags, Service brakes, Aug 11, 2018

ABS LIGHTS, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS, THROTTLE BODY CONTROL LIGHTS, AIR BAG LIGHTS, EMERGENCY BREAK LIGHTS, REAR RIGHT BREAK LIGHTS ALL COME ON MY DASH, IT IS AT RANDOM TIMES, FIRST STARTING THE CAR UP, DRIVING IT FOR 2 MINUTES OR EVEN UP TO 10-12 MINUTES. SPEED, WEATHER OR MAKING A TURN OR JUST GOING STRAIGHT DOES NOT MATTER. WARNING LIGHTS CAN GO OFF EVERY DAY MULTIPLE TIMES OR AS LTTLE AS ONCE A WEEK. YOU CAN FEEL THE STREETING GET VERY TIGHT, ITS HARD TO EVEN MAKE A TURN WHICH IS NOT VERY SAFE. HAD MY VEHILCE IN THE SHOP FOR 25 DAYS STRAIGHT. WAS TOLD THE ISSUES WERE FIXED AND WITHINT 7 HOURS OF PICKING MY CAR UP ALL THE SAME LIGHTS CAME ON.

  3. Vehicle speed control, Electronic stability control (ESC), Service brakes, Apr 16, 2018

THIS CAR IS THE SECOND FUSION HYBRID I HAVE. THE 2015 AND 2016 HYBRID TITANIUM HAD THE SAME ISSUES. I CHANGED ONE FOR THE OTHER IN HOPE THE PROBLEM WOULD BE GONE. ALMOST EVERYTIME I DRIVE IN LOW SPEEDS, CIRCA 15MPH UP TO 30MPH ON UNLEVELED PAVEMENT WITH SETTS THE FOLLOWING LIGHTS TURN ON: ADVANCE TRAC, ABS, HILL ASSISTANT CONTROL. WHILST THOSE LIGHTS ARE ON, NONE OF THOSE FUNCTIONS WORKS. AS IT HAPPENED IN 2015 AND STILL HAPPENS IN MY 2016. IVE COMPLAINT TO FORD, BUT THEY NEVER GAVE ME A SOLUTION. I BELIEVE IT IS SOFTWARE PROBLEMS IN ABS MODULE. BUT NO UP TO DATE CALIBRATION FILES HAVE RESOLVED THIS ISSUE. IT HAPPENS FREQUENTLY, SO I WILL INPUT THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WITH THE OLDER CAR (2015). I KNOW THAT NHTSA HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATING A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH 2009 TO 2011 FUSIONS. BUT I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT THE CLOSURE OF THOSE CASES NEITHER WHETHER THERE IS ANY OTHER INVESTIGATION GOING ON. I LIVE IN BRAZIL, BUT HERE, THE GOVERNMENT AND FORD DO NOT CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS AS USA CARES. SO I HOPE THAT AN INVESTIGATION IN USA COULD OBLIGE FORD OF BRAZIL MAKE THE REPAIRS TO FUSIONS SOLD HERE AS WELL. I WILL INPUT AN ADDRESS OF RELATIVES WHO LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO. MY PHONE WILL BEGIN WITH +553

  4. Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Visibility/wiper, Apr 15, 2018

  6. Service brakes, Mar 29, 2018

WHEN DRIVING CAR & USING BRAKES PEDAL WILL GO PART WAY TO FLOOR WITHOUT HAVING ANY BRAKES WORK & DASH WARNING LIGHTS WILL COME ON THAT INCLUDE HILL STAR ASSIST , CHECK REAR PARK AID, SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC, ABS LIGHT & AIR BAG LIGHT... I HAVE HAD COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE TWICE AT SLOW SPEED SO WAS ABLE TO COAST CAR TO A STOP WITHOUT HAVING POSSIBLY A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I HAVE HAD CAR AT 2 DEALERSHIPS TRYING TO GET CAR FIXED... THEY HAVE REPLACED BRAKE LINES & SPEED SENSOR WITH NO GOOD RESULTS. THEY WILL WRITE DOWN ON WORK ORDER THAT CUSTOMER STATES THIS IS A PROBLEM & THAT THEY WILL TEST DRIVE IT & BE UNABLE TO VERIFY CONCERN . THUS RETURNING CAR TO ME. I BOUGHT CAR WITH APPROXIMATELY 23,000 MILES & NOW AT 87,000 WITH PROBLEM HAPPENING EVERY TIME I DRIVE IT. ALSO HAVING OTHER PROBLEMS WITH CAR BUT THIS ONE IS VERY SERIOUS.

  7. Steering, Service brakes, Engine, Sep 20, 2017

WHILE DRIVING THE CAR AT ABOUT 25 MILES AN HOUR, FIRST THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT THEN THE AIRBAG LIGHT THEN THERE WAS A WARNING TO STOP DRIVING THE CAR. A BIG EXCLAMATION MARK WAS IN THE DISPLAY. THE CAR LOST POWER AND SLOWED TO A STOP. I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. I TRIED RESTARTING THE CAR AND ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE STILL THERE SO I RAN THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSTICS REPORT. WHICH STATED THERE WAS A THROTTLE PROBLEM AND ENGINE FAILURE AND AIRBAG FAILURE AND BRAKE FAILURE. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP.

  8. Service brakes, Jun 20, 2017

REAR BRAKES ARE BEGINNING TO WEAR. I AM TOLD THAT THE BRAKE PADS NEED TO BE REPLACE. HOW CAN THIS BE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEARLY A YEAR OLD. PLEASE EXPLAIN.

  9. Structure, Service brakes, Feb 22, 2017, crash

DRIVING ON A DAMP CITY ROAD, APPLIED BRAKES TO STOP, ABS SEEMED TO NOT FUNCTION CAUSING CAR TO SLIDE INTO THE CAR AHEAD CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. ACCIDENT DID NOT DEPLOY AIRBAGS.

  10. Steering, Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Jan 8, 2017, crash

AFTER COMING TO A STOP ON OUR HIGHWAY RAMP. I HAD INTENDED TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN. BEFORE I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE MY CAR ACCELERATED CAUSING MY BACK TIRES TO LOCK AND SCREECH. I WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TOWARD THE RIGHT SO THAT I COULD REMAIN ON THE TWO LANE ROAD. MY CAR PULLED TO THE LEFT AND I SLAMMED INTO THE MEDIUM. MY CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP BUT WAS STILL RUNNING. I TURNED OFF THE MEDIUM AND CONTINUED HOME. SHORTLY AFTER I HEARD THUMPING NOISE FOLLOWED BY LOUDER THUMPING AND MY ENTIRE DASH BOARD LIT EXCEPT FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THE WRENCH. I PULLED MY CAR TO THE SIDE TO FIND I HAD TWO BLOWN FRONT TIRES, MY BUMPER WAS BROKEN AND MY DRIVER SIDE BACK TIRE WENT FLAT WAITING ON A TOW. ALL MY YEARS DRIVING I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED AN UNINTENTIONAL ACCELERATION OF A VEHICLE AND PRAY THAT MYSELF OR GRANDDAUGHTER NEVER HAVE TO AGAIN. *TR

  11. Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Jan 3, 2017

CAR EXPERIENCES UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHEN TRYING TO BRAKE. PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT. BRAKE PEDAL IS HARD WITH UNINTENDED ACCELERATION MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP THE CAR EVEN WHILE STANDING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. CAR HAS BEEN INTO DEALERSHIP THREE TIMES WITH NO RESOLUTION. PROBLEM IS VERY DANGEROUS AND THE CAR HAS CRUISED THROUGH SEVERAL STOP SIGNS OR LIGHTS BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM.

  12. Power train, Service brakes, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 28, 2016

WHILE TRAVELING ON BUSINESS MY 2016 FORD FUSION FLEET VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER TO THE ACCELERATOR AND BEGAN VIBRATING. THE GAS PEDAL COULD BE PRESSED BUT HAD NO AFFECT AS IF IT HAD BEEN DISCONNECTED AND AN ORANGE WRENCH APPEARED STATING SEE MANUAL. I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 70 MILES AN HOUR AT THE TIME (CRUISE CONTROL WAS SET AND HAD BEEN AT THIS SPEED FOR SOME TIME, NO RECENT ACCELERATION HAD OCCURRED). WHEN IT HAPPENED I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION ZONE WITH NO SHOULDER. I WENT TO TAP THE BRAKE TO SEE IF IT WAS STILL FUNCTIONING AND WHEN I REACHED FOR IT WITH MY FOOT IT WAS ALREADY PARTIALLY DEPRESSED AND WHEN I TAPPED IT THE CAR FELT LIKE THE BRAKES HAD LOCKED OR WERE FOR SOME REASON EXTREMELY SENSITIVE CAUSING ME TO RAPIDLY DECELERATE ALMOST CAUSING AN ACCIDENT SINCE PEOPLE WERE TRAVELING BEHIND ME. AFTER THAT HAPPENED I DECIDED I HAD NO OTHER OPTION AND MOVED OFF TO THE RIGHT BETWEEN THE CONES AND BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP. WHEN I WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP THE VIBRATING INTENSIFIED BRIEFLY BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO SHUT THE CAR OFF. I WAITED 5 OR 10 SECONDS AND TURNED THE CAR BACK ON AND IT SEEMED TO WORK FINE. I COMPLETED THE REMAINING 60-70 MILES OF MY DRIVE AND HAVE MADE A FEW 50-100 MILE TRIPS SINCE WITHOUT IT OCCURRING AGAIN SO I THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE THING UNTIL I GOT AN EMAIL FROM THE FLEET COMPANY STATING THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE, I AM SCHEDULED TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR REPAIR NOW. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 12,000 MILES.

  13. Suspension, Service brakes, Jul 6, 2016

I BOUGHT MY 2016 FUSION IN JANUARY SO IT IS 6 MONTHS OLD. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND HAD COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE WITH NO PRIOR PROBLEMS ON THIS BRAND NEW CAR ! I HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN MY CAR AND EVENTUALLY STOP. ALSO THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE REAR-END SUSPENSION, EVERY TIME I HIT A BUMP NO MATTER HOW SMALL, IT "TOSSES" MY CAR TO THE RIGHT. THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING AS I HAVE A NEW CAR THAT I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THAT WAS EXPENSIVE TO BUY, BUT WANTED A SAFE CAR TO TRANSPORT MY NEWBORN IN.

  14. Electrical system, Service brakes, Engine, Mar 7, 2016

2016 FORD FUSION RECEIVED FROM DEALER ON DEC 2015. AT 39 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, FUSION WOULD NOT START, AND ALL ALARMS CAME ON (LOW TIRE PRESSURE, ENGINE OVERHEAT, PARKING BRAKE, PARKING SENSORS, ETC). CAR STARTED AFTER HITTING OK AND SEVERAL MORE CRANKS. FEB 2015 - AT ABOUT 2500 MILES, THE CAR WOULD NOT START FOR THE SECOND TIME, AND THE THIRD TIME WAS AT 3000 MILES, ALL WITH THE SAME EXACT ALARM BEHAVIOR. THE FOURTH TIME OCCURRED ON MARCH 7, 2016 WITH 3200 MILES ON ODOMETER; THE CAR DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY AND WHILE GOING 45MPH IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THERE WAS NO ENGINE POWER, NO STEERING POWER, NO POWER BRAKES, NOTHING BUT ALARMS. I WAS FORTUNATE TO NOT BE IN AN ACCIDENT. THE FORD DEALERSHIP HAS TAKEN THE CAR IN TWICE WITH ABSOLUTELY NO REPAIRS AND NO REPORTED DIAGNOSTIC CODES. FORD HAS EXPERIENCED THE SAME INTERMITTENT STARTING ISSUES WITH THE CAR IN THEIR POSSESSION, BUT THEY REFUSED TO CONDUCT LONG-TERM DIAGNOSIS BECAUSE THEY SIMPLY WERE NOT ABLE TO ISOLATE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME IT'S GOING INTO THE DEALER AND NOW IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE CAR LOSES POWER WHILE IN OPERATION.
