Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  2. Air bags, frontalFeb 16, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2005-2014 Mustang, 2004-2011 Ranger, 2009-2011 Mercury Milan, 2006 Ford GT, 2008-2012 Fusion, 2007-2010 Edge and Lincoln MKX, and 2009-2010 Lincoln MKZ vehicles. These vehicles may be equipped with a driver or passenger frontal air bag inflator used as a replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the frontal air bag, an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver and passenger air bag module, and replace either the module or the inflator, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 17, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S05.

  3. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  1. Service brakes, Dec 29, 2016

WHILE BRAKING OVER A SLIPPERY SURFACE, THE ABS ACTIVATED. AFTER THAT, WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD GO WAY DOWN WITH REDUCED AND DELAYED BRAKING ACTION. EVENTUALLY THE BRAKES RETURNED TO NORMAL ACTUATION BUT THE PROCESS HAS REPEATED, CAUSING DELAYED AND REDUCED BRAKING, TAKING THE DRIVER BY SURPRISE. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY CONCERN.

  2. Service brakes, Dec 29, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED, THE BRAKES WENT SOFT AND FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THE BRAKE FLUID WAS REPLACED. THE ISSUE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

  3. Service brakes, Dec 29, 2016

WHEN DRIVING OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD OR ROUGH SURFACE OR SOMETHING THAT WOULD CAUSE THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM TO ACTIVATE, THE BRAKES WOULD GO SOFT AND NEED TO BE PRESSED VERY HARD IN ORDER TO MAKE THE CAR STOP. THIS INCREASES THE TIME IT TAKES FOR THE CAR TO BRAKE MAKING IT HARD TO STOP ESPECIALLY IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. IT HAS HAPPENED ON 3 OCCASIONS ALREADY. *TR

  4. Service brakes, Dec 29, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE BRAKE PEDAL FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT HAD TO PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES TO ENGAGE THE BRAKES EVEN AFTER TURNING OFF AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, BUT THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DUPLICATED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE HCU NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 141,000.

  5. Service brakes, Dec 29, 2016

WHEN BRAKING WHILE DRIVING OVER MANHOLE COVERS OR BUMPS IN THE ROAD MY BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR MAKING BRAKING VERY DIFFICULT. AS IT APPEARS THE ABS KICKS IN AND THEN FAILS. *TR

  6. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

THE BRAKES WILL RANDOMLY GET SPONGY AND GO TO THE FLOOR WHEN APPLIED IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. ALSO THE BRAKES WILL FEEL SPONGY AND GO TO THE FLOOR WHEN APPLIED AND THE VEHICLE IS TRAVELING OVER BUMPS IN THE ROAD. NEITHER MY HUSBAND OR MYSELF HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT IN THIS VEHICLE BUT HAVE HAD TO EXIT THE ROADWAY TO AVOID REAR ENDING OTHER VEHICLES. ALSO THE VEHICLE HAS TRAVELED INTO INTERSECTIONS PRIOR TO STOPPING WHEN ATTEMPTING TO STOP WHILE TRAVELING OVER BUMPS. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND SCARY AND AS A RESULT WE CAN'T ALLOW OUR CHILDREN TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. WE PREVIOUSLY HAD A 2007 FORD FUSION IN WHICH MY DAUGHTER REAR ENDED ANOTHER CAR IN TRAFFIC WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THAT FORD FUSION WAS TOTALED. WHEN THE BRAKES ARE NOT HAVING THE ABOVE PROBLEMS, IT IS A GREAT CAR TO DRIVE. THESE BRAKE ISSUES MAKE ME A VERY UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVER AS WE HAVE A LOT OF BUMPY ROADS IN MY CITY. IT ALSO MAKES TRAVELING VERY DIFFICULT AS I DON'T KNOW WHAT TYPE OF ROAD SURFACES I MAY ENCOUNTER. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE SHOP ABOUT THESE ISSUES BUT THEY NEVER FIND A PROBLEM. *TR

  7. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

BOTH MY WIFE AND I EXPERIENCED THE BRAKE PEDAL GOING SOFT SO THAT WE HAD TO PRESS DOWN FURTHER AND THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELED DOWN FURTHER TO GET TO FIRM RESISTANCE. THE CAR WOULD NOT BRAKE NORMALLY BUT REQUIRED MORE PRESSURE TO BRAKE THE CAR AND TOOK LONGER TO STOP. WE FELT UNSAFE. IT OCCURRED AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, WHEN TRYING TO STOP. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AND WE DO NOT KNOW WHEN IT WILL OCCUR OR WHY IT IS HAPPENING. THIS HAPPENED WHEN TRYING TO STOP FOR STREET LIGHTS OR STOP SIGNS AND OCCURRED THIS PAST MONTH, THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER 2016. IT HAPPENED WHEN WE WERE TRAVELING STRAIGHT OR ON A CURVE COMING TO A FULL STOP. IT HAPPENED ON MORE THAN ONE DATE, SEVERAL TIMES TOWARDS THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER 2016

  8. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

MY BRAKE PEDAL HAS GONE SOFT AND OPERATES NOW MUCH CLOSER TO THE FLOOR OF THE VEHICLE FOLLOWING A RATHER SEVERE APPLICATION OF BRAKING TO AVOID A COLLISION. (I WAS TRAVELING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION ON A MAJOR ROADWAY AT 40-45 MPH WHEN A VEHICLE MADE A LEFT TURN IN FRONT OF ME) IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE INCIDENT, I FEARED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT GOING TO STOP AT THE NEXT TRAFFIC LIGHT AND SO IT WENT FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY IN OCTOBER , 2016. THE BRAKES WERE NOT RIGHT. AFTER SEVERAL DAYS I NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES DID FEEL A LITTLE BETTER, HOWEVER, I AM SURE HAVING DRIVEN THIS VEHICLE SINCE PURCHASED NEW, THEY ARE NOT WHAT THEY WERE PRIOR TO THE HARD STOP. *TR

  9. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

WHEN ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM IS NEEDED, SUCH AS ON A SLIPPERY ROAD, THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR, RESULTING IN A LACK OF STOPPING POWER, RESULTING IN A HAZARDOUS SITUATION. WHEN ROADS ARE NOT SLIPPERY, BRAKES WORK NORMALLY.

  10. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

2009 FORD FUSION BRAKE PROBLEMS. THE BRAKE PEDAL INTERMITTENLY GOES DOWN THE FLOOR UNEXEPECTLY. I HAD TO STAND ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE CAR. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN REPORTED TO MURPHY FORD, CHESTER PA ON 4 OCCASIONS. THIS CAR HAS BEEN TOWED TWICE TO MURPHY FORD , CONCERNING THIS ISSUE. MURPHY FORD COULD NOT DUPLICATE THIS PROBLEM. AFTER THE 4TH VISIT, AND MURPHY FORD COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, I REQUESTED THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER BE REPLACE. THIS CAR IS UNSAFE AND FORD SHOULD CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. I AM AUTHORIZING THE NHTSB TO REVIEW MY VEHICLE SERVICE RECORD FROM MURPHY FORD CONCERNING THIS ISSUE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD FUSION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES FAILED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO SLOW DOWN FROM 30 MPH. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER WHERE THE BODY DAMAGE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,440.

  12. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD FUSION. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE AND DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE ABS SENSOR ACTIVATED. MOMENTS LATER, THE BRAKE PEDAL EXTENDED TO THE FLOOR WHEN IT WAS DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE DID NOT IMMEDIATELY STOP AND THE STOPPING DISTANCE WAS INCREASED. THE DEALER CHANGED THE REAR ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS, AND BRAKE FLUID; HOWEVER, THE SAME FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL MONTHS LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE FRONT BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,914.

  13. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

WHILE RECENTLY DRIVING ON SNOW, THE BRAKES SEEMED TO ALMOST MALFUNCTION AFTER ABS WAS ACTIVATED. I HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKES ALMOST TO THE FLOOR TO BRAKE WHICH DELAYED MY ABILITY TO BRAKE ALMOST CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO NOT STOP IN TIME. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED IN SLICK CONDITIONS THAT WOULD ACTIVATE THE ABS SYSTEM. PUMPING THE BRAKES WOULD HELP TO BRING THE BRAKE PRESSURE BACK BUT WOULD ALMOST INSTANTLY GO OUT AGAIN THE NEXT TIME I HAD TO BRAKE. THIS SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASES MY ABILITY TO DRIVE SAFELY. *TR

  14. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE BRAKES FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE PADS AND SHOES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE PADS AND SHOES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED A SECOND TIME, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 81,492.

  15. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AND APPLYING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE BRAKES FELT SPONGY OR SOFT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,000.

  16. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000. UPDATED 02/21/17*LJ

  17. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

AFTER THE ANTILOCK BRAKES ARE ENABLED THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES ALMOST ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BEFORE THE BRAKES ARE ACTIVATED. THIS PROBLEM HAS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO GO PAST SEVERAL IMPORTANT STOPPING POINTS INCLUDING STREET LIGHTS.

  18. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WHILE I WAS APPLYING THEM UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. MAYBE 25 MPH ON A CITY STREET. AFTER HAVING A MECHANIC INSPECT MY CAR, HE DETERMINED THE ABS HYDRAULIC UNIT WAS BAD.....$1600 LATER THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. I GOT LUCKY, BUT THAT FAILURE COULD'VE BEEN DANGEROUS. THE BRAKES DID ENGAGE, BUT WHEN THE PEDAL WAS ALMOST TO THE FLOOR. *TR

  21. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM GOES SOFT AND THE BRAKES GO TO THE FLOOR IN SNOWY OR RAINY CONDITIONS. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ON TWO SNOWY DAYS IN MASSACHUSETTS ON DECEMBER 17TH AND 18TH, 2016. THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP WHEN I BRAKED IN MOTION FOR A 2 WAY STOP SIGN. THE BRAKES MADE LARGE NOISES AND FELT VERY SOFT AND THE CAR WOULD NOT COMPLETELY STOP. FORTUNATELY I WAS ONLY GOING 15 MILES PH AND NO OTHER CARS WERE APPROACHING. HOWEVER, IF A CAR WAS PROCEEDING I WOULD HAVE CRASHED INTO THE CAR.I UNDERSTAND THAT THE 2009 FORD FUSION IS UNDER INVESTIGATION THAT THE BRAKES MAY FAIL IN CERTAIN WEATHER CONDITIONS. THIS IS TRUE AS I HAVE EXPERIENCED IT. WHAT DO WE DO WHILE WAITING FOR THIS INVESTIGATION? IT IS A SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. IS FORD RESPONSIBLE IN BETWEEN THIS INVESTIGATION TO FIX THE PROBLEM? CAN I BRING MY CAR TO THE FORD CENTER TO HAVE THIS ISSUE FIXED ON THEIR DIME?

  22. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

TWICE THIS YEAR I TRIED TO BRAKE WHILE GOING OVER A ROUGH SURFACE COMING TO AN INTERSECTION AND THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR AND IT TOOK MORE DISTANCE TO STOP THAN IT SHOULD. THE BRAKE PEDAL STAYED LOW FOR ABOUT 15 MIN. UNTIL IT EVENTUALLY CAME BACK TO REGULAR POSITION. TOOK IT TO DEALER ON OCT. 26,2016 WHEN IT HAPPENED THE SECOND TIME AND THEY SAID THEY CHECKED EVERYTHING AND MY BRAKES WERE FINE. I EVEN SUGGESTED IT SEEMED TO BE RELATED TO ABS SINCE I DIDN'T FEEL THE NORMAL 'GRABBING' SENSATION WHEN THE ABS TAKES OVER.

  23. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

AFTER COMING TO A HARD STOP ON INTERSTATE DUE TO A CRASH AHEAD BRAKE PEDAL WENT SOFT AND BRAKING WAS DIMINISHED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A NEARBY FORD DEALER AND THEY BLED THE BRAKES AND ENGAGED THE ANTI-LOCK SYSTEM IN A GRAVEL LOT TO 'RESET' THE SYSTEM. I TREATED THIS AS A ON OFF ANOMALY UNTIL I SAW IN THE NEWS THAT OTHERS HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS.

  24. Service brakes, Dec 28, 2016

WHILE DRIVING IN SLUSH AND SNOWY ASPHALT ROADS, I WAS TURNING THE CORNER ON CITY ROADS AT A STOPLIGHT AND I STARTED TO SLIDE SO I PRESSED MY BRAKES AND MY PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR. I COULD PUMP MY BRAKES AND I WOULD SLOWLY SLOW DOWN BUT IN ORDER TO STOP I HAD TO PRESS THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR HARD. I DID TAKE MY VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE ON 12/20/16 AT A FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPLACED THE ABS HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT FOR $1274. *TR

  25. Service brakes, Dec 27, 2016

AFTER ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ENGAGED WHILE DRIVING, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND LOST MOST OF THE BRAKING ABILITY. THIS HAPPENED 3 TIMES. THE FIRST 2 TIMES IT HAPPENED, THE BRAKING PRESSURE RECOVERED WITHIN A DAY AND BRAKES WENT BACK TO NORMAL. THE 3RD TIME IT HAPPENED THE BRAKE PRESSURE NEVER RECOVERED COMPLETELY. I STILL HAVE BRAKING ABILITY, BUT REQUIRES A LONG BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL TO ENGAGE BRAKES FULLY. IF I PUMP BRAKES, PEDAL PRESSURE SEEMS TO BUILD TO A NORMAL LEVEL, BUT WILL GO BACK TO A SOFT FEEL IMMEDIATELY AFTER I STOP PUMPING (AS IF THE BRAKE FLUID IS LEAKING PAST SOMETHING INTERNALLY). HAD DEALER LOOK AT IT AFTER 1ST INCIDENT, BUT COULDN'T DIAGNOSE ANY PROBLEMS WITH SYSTEM (BRAKES HAD GONE BACK TO NORMAL BY THEN). I AM CURRENTLY DRIVING WITH THE LONG PEDAL TRAVEL AND SOFT FEEL OF THE BRAKES, BUT HAVE LEARNED TO COMPENSATE FOR IT. *TR
