Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

I WAS DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE GOING 65 MPH WHEN MY GAS PEDAL STOPPED WORKING, IT WOULD NOT MAKE MY CAR ACCELERATE. THE RPMS DROPPED DOWN TO 1000-1500 AND MY CAR IMMEDIATELY STARTED TO SLOW DOWN. I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND AS I SLOWED DOWN THE CAR JUMPED AND ACTED LIKE IT WAS STALLING OUT. THE WRENCH LIGHT ON THE DASH ALSO ILLUMINATED. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND LET THE CAR RUN FOR ABOUT 1O MORE MINUTES BEFORE IT STALLED OUT.THINKING THAT MY CAR WAS BROKEN DOWN AND I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO GET IT TOWED. BEFORE I CALLED FOR A TOW I RESTARTED THE CAR AND WHEN I DID, IT RAN FINE. *JS

I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION, THINKING THAT MY CAR WAS BROKEN DOWN AND I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO GET IT TOWED. I THOUGHT TO RESTART THE CAR AND WHEN I DID, IT RAN FINE. UNTIL 3 DAYS LATER WHEN IT REPEATED THE SAME SYMPTOMS, 3 TIMES IN ONE DAY. IT HAS NOW BEEN A WEEK AND I HAVE HAD COUNTLESS TIMES WHERE THIS HAS HAPPENED, MANY TIMES ON THE INTERSTATE, OR BUSY ROADS. JUST TODAY IN A 2 MILE STRETCH THIS HAPPENED 4 TIMES! *TR

  5. Power train, Jul 22, 2014

WRENCH LIGHT WENT ON IN 2010 FORD FUSION V6 SEL. VEHICLE HAD TROUBLE ACCELERATING WHEN GAS PEDAL WAS PUSHED. RPM'S WERE SPORADIC AND TRANSMISSION WAS NOT PROPERLY FUNCTIONING. FELT LIKE GEARS WERE JUMPING BACK AND FORTH. CAR WAS JERKY AND WOULD ONLY ACCELERATE A LITTLE IF PEDAL WAS PUSHED ALL THE WAY DOWN. WHEN I GOT VEHICLE HOME I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND LEFT FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. I STARTED VEHICLE AGAIN AND LIGHT WAS OFF AND RODE FINE. *TR

  7. Power train, Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, Jul 22, 2014

WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AT 43,000 MILES A CHECK FUEL FILL INLET WARNING APPEARED. I MAIN TENDED THE INLET SYSTEM AND THE WARNING AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD DISAPPEAR. AS TIME WENT ON I NOTICED THAT WHEN I WOULD MERGE ONTO A BUSY HIGHWAY, MY CAR WOULD BARELY MOVE. I HAVE COME VERY CLOSE TO DEATH AND CAUSING OTHERS INJURIES BECAUSE OF THIS. I HAD THE THROTTLE BODY CHECKED AFTER THE RECALL AND THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE THROTTLE WASN'T THE ISSUE. A P0456 APPEARED AND THAT MEANS A SMALL EVAPORATE LEAK. I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP IF THEY PERFORMED A SMOKE TEST AND HE SAID NO. AFTER PAYING 90$ FOR A DIAGNOSTIC FEE THAT WASN'T PERFORMED ACCORDINGLY TO THE TAB BULLETIN, I BECAME VERY ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED WITH FORD. EVERY IME I SWITCH GEARS OR EVEN ACCELERATE MY CAR JERKS SO HARD THAT I HEAR WHAT IS MY ENGINE OR TRANSMISSION LOUDLY SHIFTING. THIS PAST WEEK MY CAR WON'T START. IT TAKES 15-20 SECONDS TO TURN ON. AFTER SOMEONE JUMPED THE VEHICLE WHEN I WAS STUCK AT WORK, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DISAPPEARED, MY SYNC AND VOICE FEATURED DISAPPEARED, AND NOW I CAN'T EVEN CHARGE MY PHONE! ALSO, THE AIR CONDITIONER QUIT WORKING AS WELL. I FEEL AS THOUGH ALL OF THE CARS FUNCTIONS ARE DELETING THEMSELVES FROM THE CAR. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS VEHICLE AND I CANNOT CONTINUE TO WORK BECAUSE OF IT. HOW CAN I PAY FOR AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR WHEN I CAN'T DRIVE TO MAKE THE MONEY? I TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF THE VEHICLE AND DO NOT FEEL FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS POORLY MANUFACTURED CAR. THEY NEED TO RECALL THE 2010 FORD FUSION BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT OR EVEN SOMETHING WORSE. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE ACCELERATOR SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING AND HAD TO PULL OVER IN HIGH SPEEDS WHEN MY VEHICLE COULD NOT ACCELERATE. 9. Power train, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Jul 21, 2014

CAR STALLED ALL OF A SUDDEN TRAVELING 70 MPH IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A 3 LANE HIGHWAY. THE THROTTLE WENT INTO LIMP MODE AND I WAS FORCED TO ABRUPTLY PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE CAR SPUTTERED WITH THE WRENCH LIGHT ON THE DASH. I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN, THE WRENCH LIGHT WENT AWAY AND THE ENGINE STARTED PROPERLY. I DIAGNOSED THE COMPUTER SYSTEM AND GOT TWO CODES, P2111 AND P2112. THE THROTTLE BODY IS GETTING STUCK OPEN AND STUCK CLOSED CAUSING THE CAR TO GO INTO LIMP MODE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS FOR ANYONE TRAVELING ON A BUSY ROAD AND COULD DEFINITELY CAUSE INJURY IF SOMEONE IS UNABLE TO REACT TO THE SITUATION DUE TO THEIR CAR BEING INOPERABLE. *TR

WE HAVE HAD AN ABNORMAL FUEL SMELL AND LEAKAGE FROM THE GAS TANK AREA. WE HAVE MENTIONED THIS TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP ON A FEW OCCASIONS. WE WERE TOLD THERE WAS A NOTICE OF RECALL #13S04 BUT WHEN WE TALKED TO THE DEALERSHIP WE WERE TOLD THIS WAS NOT FOR OUR BUT FOR A 2013. WHY ARE THEY NOT TAKING CARE OF THE SAME PROBLEM FOR THE EARLIER MODEL. WE HAVE NOW TAKEN OUR CAR IN FOR 2 OTHER RECALLS AND FIND THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS AND POSSIBLE LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM. *TR

  13. Engine and engine cooling, Power train, Jul 15, 2014

I WAS DRIVING MY FUSION DOWN A 45 MPH LOCAL ROAD WHEN IT STARTED SHAKING AND THE ACCELERATOR STOPPED WORKING. I PULLED OVER THE SIDE OR THE ROAD, STOPPED THE CAR, TURNED OFF THE ENGINE, AND REMOVED THE KEY. I WAITED A MINUTE THEN RESTARTED THE ENGINE. WHEN I STARTED ACCELERATING THE CAR WAS JERKING. I GOT AROUND FIVE MILES AND THE ACCELERATOR STOPPED WORKING AGAIN. I REPEATED TURNING OFF THE ENGINE, WAITING, THEN STARTING BACK UP AND WITHIN THE MINUTE IT STOPPED WORKING AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED A TOTAL OF TWO MORE TIMES. I MANAGED TO GET HOME AND CALL THE DEALERSHIP. I LET THE CAR SIT FOR AN HOUR THEN DROVE IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP WITH NO ISSUES. I HAVE YET TO HEAR BACK FROM THEM. BUT I SEE THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE FORD OWNERS WITH SIMILAR ISSUES. *TR

FORD HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEIR AC EQUIPMENT SINCE 2006. THEY HAVE IGNORED THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE LEFT TO OWNER FOR REPAIRS. THE PROBLEM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE AC BUT WITH THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR EVAPORATOR. WHICH CAN EITHER OVER HEAT OR FREEZE UP BEHIND THE DASH. IT COST MOST OWNER A HIGH LABOR COST FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THIS DEFECT THAT FORD IS AWARE OF. AS I PULLED OUT ONTO A BUSY STREET GOING TO WORK MY CAR WOULD NOT RESPOND TO GAS, I HAD THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR WITH NO RESPONSE OTHER THAN A WEAK ATTEMPT AT A LURCH. I HAD TO PULL OVER (PARTIALLY OFF OF THE ROAD) INTO A NEIGHBOR'S YARD TO AVOID BEING HIT BY A LARGE TRANSPORT TRUCK COMING UP ON ME RAPIDLY. I PUSHED IT INTO A "TURNED AROUND" POSITION AND BETWEEN PUSHING AN THE LURCHING GOT BACK HOME. THE ROAD I WAS ON WAS TOO NARROW AND TOO BUSY TO JUST LEAVE IT. I HAVE A HISTORY OF BACK SURGERY AND THIS DID NOT HELP!!!! AFTER I GOT IT TO THE HILL NEAR MY HOME I COASTED IN STILL WITH NO RESPONSE TO THE GAS. THERE WAS AN ORANGE LIGHT ON WITH A WRENCH PICTURE. I LOOKED THIS UP ONLINE AND FOUND NUMEROUS SITES WITH OTHERS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH NO HELP FROM FORD! SOME WERE ACTUALLY REAR-ENDED ON THE INTERSTATES SO I WAS FORTUNATE IN THAT ASPECT! (SO FAR!) THERE IS NO RECALL ON THIS ISSUE AND IT SEEMS THAT FORD CANNOT DIAGNOSE IT UNLESS THE LIGHT IS CURRENTLY ON! THE CODE ERASES ONCE THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED SO THEY "CANNOT" DIAGNOSE IT AND THEREFORE SEND US BACK OUT IN THE DEFECTIVE VEHICLE. THERE IS NO WARNING THAT THIS IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN AND THERE IS NO WAY TO "MOVE FAST" ENOUGH TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF TRAFFIC. THIS COULD BE FATAL IN FAST MOVING THICK TRAFFIC WITH LARGER VEHICLES COMING UP FROM BEHIND AT SPEED LIMITS OF 70 MPH. THE CAR WILL NOT MOVE WHEN IT DOES THIS AND RPMS DO NOT GO ABOVE 1000RPM. ARE RECALLS ONLY DONE WHEN SOMEONE DIES? IF SO, I NEED TO TRADE THIS CAR IN ASAP! *TR

MYSELF AND TWO PASSENGERS (INCLUDING 10 MONTH OLD) WERE RIDING NORTHBOUND ON THE INTERSTATE AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH. OUR 2010 FORD FUSION SUDDENLY WENT INTO SAFE MODE (AKA "LIMP HOME MODE") WHERE THE CAR CONTINUES TO HAVE POWER (STEERING, BRAKES, HVAC SYSTEMS) BUT IT DOES NOT RESPOND TO PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR. WE WERE TRAVELING ALONG AT ~3-5MPH WITH OTHER TRAFFIC STILL TRAVELING FULL SPEED. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION IN AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS VEHICLE. A FORD DEALER HAD JUST PERFORMED RECALL 13B17 ON THE VEHICLE, WHICH RECALIBRATED THE POWERTRAIN. UNFORTUNATELY THEY DID NOT INSTALL A NEW THROTTLE BODY, WHICH IS COVERED ON THIS VEHICLE IN SATISFACTION PROGRAM 13N03. *JS

ON JUNE 28, 2014 WHILE BACKING UP MY 2010 FORD FUSION HYBRID IN A PARKING LOT I HAD COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE. BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR. WARNING LIGHTS DID GO ON AS I WAS BACKING UP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED. THE REPAIR THAT WAS DONE WAS AN "OVERLAY OF HARNESS AND INSTALLATION OF A CUTOFF PRESSURE SENSOR." THE PART WAS C JUMPER WIRING. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THIS HAD NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. *JS

  22. Steering, Jul 2, 2014

ON THE HOME I WAS TURNING ONTO MY NEIGHBORHOOD STREET, AND AT A SUDDEN IT BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. I HAD TO FORCE MY STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT AND COME TO A DRAMATIC STOP TO KEEP FROM GOING INTO THE HOUSE ON THE CORNER. THIS IS AN ON GOING PROBLEM AND I HAVE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO COMPLAIN AND WAS TOLD TO BRING THE CAR IN, BUT BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THAT $100.00 FEE FOR THEM TO DIAGNOSE MY VEHICLE I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO TURN AWAY. MY STEERING WHEEL HAS LOST POWER COUNTLESS OF TIMES AND MY LIFE IS IN DANGER. THIS IS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION AND I CANT AFFORD TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE AT THE TIME....PLEASE PLEASE!!!! HELP I DON'T WANT TO DIE OR BE SERIOUSLY HURT!! *TR

WHEN I START MY CAR AND DRIVE OUT OF PARKING IT SPUTTERS FOR A BIT. THEN LATER ON I WILL COMPLETELY LOOSE THE ACCELERATION. I HAVE TO TURN OFF AND RESTART THE CAR. IT WILL WORK FOR A LITTLE BIT AND THEN I LOOSE ACCELERATION AGAIN. HAS HAPPEN ON THE HIGHWAY, AT A INTERSECTION, AND SIDE ROADS. I HAD THE THROTTLE REPLACED AND IT STILL HAPPENS...... *TR
