Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. 4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

WHILE I WAS DRIVING IN THE FAST LANE ON THE HIGHWAY MY 2010 FORD FUSION SPORT OVERHEATED AND CUT OFF DUE TO A FAULTY HEAT PUMP WHICH RESULTED IN COOLANT LEAKING INTO IT AND WARPING MY ENGINE. THERE WAS NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR ANY OTHER INDICATOR THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE. I HAD EVEN JUST GOTTEN MY CAR "WINTER READY" WITH MY MECHANIC AND IN NOVEMBER.

WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT APPLIED MY BRAKES AND THEY WENT ALMOST TO THE FLOOR. I TOOK MY 2010 FORD FUSION TO LAIRD NOLLER FORD REPAIR SHOP AND WAS TOLD MY ABS HYDRAULIC PUMP WAS FAULTY AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACE AT A COST OF $1,300.00. WHILE THE REPAIR WAS REVIEWING MY BRAKE ISSUE A WORKER MOVED MY VEHICLE KNOWING IT HAD NO BRAKES AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE REAR BUMPER AND FENDER. I WOULD THINK A BRAKE PROBLEM OF THIS NATURE WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED THE DEATH OF MY CHILDREN AND I WOULD BE ON THE RECALL LIST. IN ADDITION, I SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR THIS REPAIR SINCE IT IS A MANUFACTORY FAULT AND NOT CAUSED BY ME.

TOTAL COST OF THE WORK IS ABOUT $1,800 AND LOOKING ONLINE IT'S OBVIOUS MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE. WHEN I BROUGHT UP THE RECALL ON 2010 FORD FUSIONS (RECALL 15S18) I WAS TOLD THAT ONLY APPLIED TO CARS BUILT IN SEPTEMBER OF 2010 TO ANOTHER DATE, WHEN MINE WAS BUILD IN JUNE - MEANING IT DIDN'T QUALIFY. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THIS SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BY FORD AS MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE.

I PURCHASED A NEW 2010 FORD FUSION HYBRID SE FROM A FORD DEALERSHIP IN FAIRFAX, VA. AFTER OWNING THE VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 9 YEARS, THE VEHICLE NO LONGER OPERATES IN ELECTRIC MODE (IT ONLY OPERATES IN GAS MODE). MY AVERAGE MPG HAS DROPPED FROM 37-40 MPG TO 25-27 MPG. I TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER MANASSAS, VA IN NOV 2019 WHO INDICATED THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT THEY HAVE NO SOLUTION TO FIX IT (THEY INITIALLY WERE GOING TO CHARGE ME $150 DIAGNOSTIC FEE BUT WAIVED THE FEE AND SENT ME HOME). THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS IN FORD VEHICLE FORUMS WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. CONSENSUS IS THAT FORD PROGRAMMED THE ELECTRONIC MODE TO STOP WORKING AFTER 9 YEARS. WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS NO DISCLOSURE THAT I WOULD NO LONGER HAVE A PROPERLY WORKING HYBRID AFTER 9 YEARS. THIS END-OF-LIFE DECISION WOULD HAVE TO BE PROGRAMMED INTO THE VEHICLE'S ECU AT THE TIME OF MANUFACTURING AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISCLOSED BY FORD AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. HAD FORD DISCLOSED THIS, IT WOULD HAVE DIRECTLY IMPACTED MY DECISION TO PURCHASE THE VEHICLE. THE FIX APPEARS TO BE REPROGRAMMING THE VEHICLE TO MAKE IT THINK IT IS LESS THAN 9 YEARS OLD WHICH RETURNS THE HYBRID FUNCTIONS TO NORMAL. ACCORDING TO SEVERAL FORUMS, SOME FORD SERVICE CENTERS HAVE CONDUCT THIS FIX, BUT THE MAJORITY OF FORD SERVICE CENTERS ARE NOT WILLING/ABLE TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN FORD'S OASIS DATABASE WITH NO SOLUTION. TSB #SSM 48238 NHTSA ID #10167224 WAS ANNOUNCED IN OCT 2019. 23. Steering, Dec 24, 2019

AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE, POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT DISPLAYS AND STEERING IS "LOCKED" I.E. CAN NOT BE TURNED. CYCLED THE IGNITION A NUMBER OF TIMES AND EVENTUALLY THE STEERING FUNCTIONED. THIS HAS OCCURRED TWICE. DEALER WANTS $1600 FOR THIS REPAIR.

  24. Engine, Dec 23, 2019

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING UP A SLIGHT INCLINE AND STOPPING, THE VEHICLE WOULD DRIFT BACKWARDS WHEN IN DRIVE GEAR. THE VEHICLE HAD AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. WHEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, THE RPMS INCREASED, BUT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SWITCH GEARS SMOOTHLY LIKE IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ONLY PRINTED OUT THE RECALL INFORMATION. THE MANUFACTURER ALSO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000.

  25. Steering, Dec 21, 2019

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING AND NEARLY CAUSED ME TO WRECK, SOMEHOW I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR OFF THE ROAD SAFELY. THE WARNING MESSAGE 'POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT' APPEARED ON THE DASH AND SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2010 FUSIONS AND OTHER MODELS. AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF TWICE THE MESSAGE RESET AND POWER STEERING CAME BACK HOWEVER I'M SCARED TO DRIVE THE CAR NOT KNOWING IF THIS ISSUE WILL POP UP WHEN I'M ON THE HIGHWAY AT A HIGH SPEED. LUCKILY I DIDN'T INJURE OR KILL MYSELF OR OTHERS THIS TIME.
