Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

  1. Service brakes, Dec 21, 2019

I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS BRAKE PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR..FIRST @ 23,000 MILES BACK BRAKES FROZE UP ON ME, HAD TO HAVE BOTH ROTORS & PADS REPLACED, SINCE THEN HAD PADS REPLACED AGAIN ON THE BACK. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT PADS TWICE, JUST THIS MONTH WITH 46,000 MILES ON MY CAR, HAD TO REPLACE BOTH FRONT ROTORS & PADS BECAUSE THEY WERE MAKING A SQUEALING NOISE ..I FEEL THE BRAKES ARE A SAFETY ISSUE, NEVER KNOW WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO STOP WORKING ESPECIALLY IF I'M DRIVING 🚗

  2. Service brakes, Dec 21, 2019

I'VE RECEIVED A RECALL FOR THE ABS VALVE NOT WORKING CORRECTLY AND CAUSING THE BRAKES TO NOT WORK PROPERLY. COULD THIS BE WHAT'S CAUSED MY PROBLEMS BEFORE I'VE HAD SEVERAL TIMES SINCE I'VE OWNED MY 2010 FUSION GO TO APPLY THE BRAKES AND THEY JUST DIDN'T WORK PROPERLY. ABOUT A MONTH AGO I RAN INTO THE BACK OF A FORD F150. I WAS IN A TURNING LANE WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC AND WHEN WE DIDN'T MAKE IT THROUGH THE LIGHT I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND I WASN'T STOPPING, LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PULL THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WHILE PUSHING ALL I COULD WITH A SIZE 9 STEEL TOE WORK BOOT TO KEEP FROM DAMAGING ANYONE'S VEHICLE. IT WASN'T ANY DAMAGE TO THE BACK OF THE TRUCK BUT IT WAS ENOUGH TO BREAK A CHROME PIECE OFF MY GRILL. I'VE ALWAYS JUST ASSUMED IT WAS LACK OF MAINTENANCE OR DUE TO WET ROADS PLUS THE FACT THE CAR HAS OVER 225,000 MILES BUT THIS LAST INCIDENT THE ROADS WAS DRY AND BEING IN A LINE OF TRAFFIC TRYING TO TURN I WAS ONLY DOING ABOUT 10 MPH.

  3. Steering, Electronic stability control (ESC), Dec 21, 2019

IMAGINE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT 65 MPH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING MOTOR GOES OUT AND IT TAKES EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. NOT KNOWING WHAT WAS WRONG AND AFRAID OF DAMAGING SOMETHING FURTHER HAVING TO GET THE CAR TOWED $ 125 AND AFTER A $1,800 REPAIR BILL AT THE DEALER THEY EXPLAINED ALMOST EVERY YEAR MODEL FUSION EXCEPT THE 2010 I OWN WASN'T RECALLED. NOT COUNTING THE COST OF A RENTAL AND TIME MISSED FROM WORK WHILE THE CAR WAS IN THE SHOP. I'D CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE A PRETTY DECENT DRIVER BUT NOW I'D LIKE YOU TO TRY AND IMAGINE IF THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN YOUR WIFE OR DAUGHTER DRIVING AND THAT HAPPEN. AS FAR AS THE EXACT DATE I GUESS BECAUSE I HAD TO PAY WITH A DEBIT CARD (CASH) MY FORD PASS APP DOESN'T EVEN SHOW A RECORD OF IT. BUT I CAN GO TO MY BANK AND GET THE DATE BECAUSE I HAD TO CALL THEM TO SPEND THAT MUCH ON A DEBIT CARD

  4. Steering, Dec 18, 2019

POWER STEERING FAILURE WHILE IN A PARKING LOT OF A BUSY SHOPPING CENTER PULLING OUT OF MY SPACE. HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER 199.00 DIAGNOSTIC FEE THEY TELL ME THE POWER STEERING RACK HAS TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED AND IT'S GOING TO COST ME OVER $2,300.00!!!! THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND FORD ISN'T DOING ANYTHING TO HELP PEOPLE AND YET THE RECALLED THE 2011 THAT USES THE EXACT SAME POWER STEERING SYSTEM. NOW I AM FORCED TO BUY ANOTHER CAR THE SAME MONTH I WAS TO PAY IT OFF BECAUSE I DONT HAVE THE $2300.00 AT CHRISTMAS TIME TO GET A CAR FIXED THAT IS 9 YEARS OLD. THIS IS WRONG. FORD SHOULD BE HELD LIABLE!!!

  5. Power train, Dec 18, 2019

VEHICLE IS A 2010 FUSION HYBRID. VEHICLE HESITATES FOR 1-3 SECONDS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. THERE IS A DELAY BECAUSE OF WHAT APPEARS TO BE A FAILURE OF THE HYBRID DRIVE SYSTEM TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE POWER. I ALSO NOTICE THIS DURING ROUTINE DRIVING, ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT A SAFETY CONCERN THEN. THE HYBRID POWER SYSTEM HAS SIMPLY STOPPED PROVIDING THE ADDITIONAL POWER REQUIRED BY THE POWERTRAIN TO OPERATE PROPERLY. THIS IS PARTICULARLY PROBLEMATIC WHEN PULLING OUT OF A SIDE STREET ONTO A BUSY ROAD. THE CAR HAS ENOUGH POWER TO GET ME INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD BUT THEN HESITATES TO ACCELERATE PROPERLY FOR 2-3 SECONDS, PRESENTING A DANGER TO ME AND OTHER CARS. I AM LEARNING TO COMPENSATE FOR THIS DELAY BUT THIS IS SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME AND OTHER DRIVERS. OTHER DRIVERS OF THE SAME MODEL OF SIMILAR AGE ARE REPORTING THE SAME ISSUES ON FORUMS SUCH AS "FORDFUSIONHYBRIDFORUM.COM"

  6. Steering, Dec 17, 2019

CAR WAS IN DETACHED VERY COLD GARAGE, STARTED CAR. WHEN PUTTING IN REVERSE NOTICED A WARNING ON SCREEN STATING POWER STEERING FAILURE. AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF GARAGE I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL WITHOUT A GREAT DEAL OF DIFFICULTY. AFTER SPEAKING WITH A FRIEND DECIDED TO TURN OFF THE CAR AND RESTART. WHEN I DID SO, THE POWER STEERING WARNING WAS GONE AND I COULD TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR 5 MILES TO A FORD DEALERSHIP WORRYING THE ENTIRE WAY THAT IT WOULD GO OFF AGAIN. I'VE SINCE BEEN INFORMED BY FORD DEALERSHIP THAT THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.

  7. Steering, Dec 15, 2019

STARTED CAR AND WHILE BACKING POWER ASSIST FAULT WARNING INDICATOR CAME ON AND LOST POWER STEERING.RESTARTED CAR AN POWER STEERING WAS OK. NOW I DON'T WANT TO DRIVE NOT KNOWING WHEN IT WILL LOCKUP AGAIN. THE 2010 FUSIONS SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.

  8. Structure, Dec 13, 2019

DRIVER SIDE DOOR DOES NOT OPEN FROM OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE DOES NOT WORK NOR MOVE. THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS: BECAUSE CAR HAS "BUCKET STYLE" FRONT SEATS. DRIVER CANNOT MOVE FROM FRONT PASSENGER TO/FROM DRIVER SIDE SEAT. TO ENTER AUTO, DRIVER ENTERS FRONT PASSENGER DOOR, REACHES OVER THE CENTER CONSOLE TO DRIVER INSIDE DOOR HANDLE, OPENS DRIVER DOOR FROM INSIDE, EXITS AUTO, ENTERS (THE NOW OPEN) DRIVER SIDE DOOR. IN UNSAFE NEIGHBORHOODS THIS PUTS THE DRIVER AND HIS PASSENGERS IN UNNECESSARY DANGER. THIS DRIVER IS UNABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR WITH THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR UNLOCKED, SO IN EVENT OF A CRASH/ACCIDENT, THE DRIVER CANNOT BE REMOVED, FROM THE CRASHED DAMAGED CAR, THE BROKEN DRIVER SIDE DOOR HANDLE CANNOT BE OPENED BY A FIRST RESPONDER/RESCUER. THE DRIVER IS IN UNNECESSARY DANGER. THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP, EXAMINED THE DRIVER'S DOOR AND REPORTS: "OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE IS STUCK, WILL NOT OPEN. PULLED DOOR PANEL OFF AND FOUND THAT LOCK AND ROD FROM HANDLE TO LATCH HAS RUSTED, AND ROTTED, CAUSING ROD TO BREAK IN HALF, ROD NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. PART HAS BEEN ORDERED AND SHOULD BE HERE BY 12-16-2019." IN THE PAST, THE DRIVER SIDE INSIDE DOOR HANDLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED THREE (3) TIMES DUE TO FAULTY MECHANISMS. THERE IS CONCERN THAT THIS EXTRA USE OF THE INSIDE HANDLE MAY AGAIN BREAK THE INSIDE HANDLE, TRAPPING THE DRIVER INSIDE THE CAR, WITH NO WAY TO EXIT. THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP: GRIECO FORD OF FORT LAUDERDALE 1333 N. FEDERAL HIGHWAY FORT LAUDERDALE, FL PHONE: 1.954.390.6530 I PAID: $139.95, ON 12/11/2019. I WAS TOLD THAT TO REPAIR THIS DANGEROUS AUTO CONDITION WILL COST AN ADDITIONAL $373.00. TOTAL COST TO REPAIR DANGEROUS AUTO CONDITION IS $512.95 FORD CORP. SHOULD REIMBURSE CUSTOMER FOR THESE UNEXPECTED COSTS, $512.95. 4 PROPERLY WORKING AUTO DOOR IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

REVERSING MY CAR OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND THE CAR WOULD NOT BRAKE. LOST ALL BRAKES IN THE CAR. PRIOR TO THIS ISSUE I ALWAYS THOUGH THE VEHICLE HAD VERY LOW BRAKES. I'D HAVE TO PRESS THE BREAK VERY LOW TO THE FLOOR TO STOP. WHEN I LOST THE BRAKES I'M THE CAR I INITIALLY THOUGHT THE CAUSE WAS DUE TO BAD CALIPERS AND ROTORS. AFTER REPLACING ALL CALIPERS UNDER WARRANTY AND BLEEDING THAT WAS NOT THE ISSUE. TOWED THE CAR TO TORRINGTON FORD AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS NEEDING A MASTER CYLINDER FIRST WHICH MAY NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND THEN A POSSIBLE HCU REPLACEMENT OF THE MASTER CYLINDER DOESN'T CORRECT HE BRAKE ISSUE. *LN*JB

WHEN I STARTED UP THE CAR & WAS GOING TO PULL OUT THE LIGHT FOR PASSENGER AIR BAG CAME ON, THEN I TURN MY WHEEL & THERE IS LIKE A GRINDING SOUND. I PULLED ON SIDE OF ROAD & HAD SOMEONE COME CHECK IT. THEY SAID SAME THING I DID. I THOUGHT IT WAS SOMETHING RUBBING AGAINST THE TIRE, BUT WHEN WE LOOKED THERE WAS NOTHING. THEN HE KEPT TURNING THE WHEEL & IT SOUNDED MORE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. MY HUSBAND CHECKED UNDERNEATH THE CAR WHEN I GOT HOME & THANK GOODNESS HE DID BECAUSE THE TIE ROD ENDS INSIDE & OUT WERE SO BAD THAT I WAS LUCKY TO HAVE NOT OF CRASHED. STILL THE STEERING IS MAKING THAT LOUD GRINDING, SCREECHING SOUND. AIR BAG & TRAC LIGHTS COME ON OCCASIONALLY STILL ALSO. REALLY FEEL UNSAFE DRIVING MY CAR HERE THE LAST FEW MONTHS. IVE HAD IT PARKED FOR THE LAST MONTH & BOUGHT JUST SOMETHING TO GET AROUND FOR NOW TIL I CAN AFFORD TO HAVE IT FIXED OR THEY HAVE A RECALL ON THESE. IVE SEEN SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH SAME PROBLEMS & I ALSO SEEN THEY RECALLED THE 2011 FOR SAME ISSUES. WHY NOT THE 2010?????

I STARTED MY CAR WHEN LEAVING WORK AND RECEIVED AN ERROR THAT THE POWER STEERING FAILED. I FOLLOWED THE GUIDELINES IN THE BOOK AND TURNED OFF THE CAR FOR 30 SECONDS AND RESTARTED. ON RESTART THE ERROR RETURNED. I DROVE CAR TO MECHANIC AND HAD NO POWER STEERING. AFTER TALKING WITH MECHANIC ATTEMPTED TO LEAVE AND STILL NO POWER STEERING. ANOTHER ERROR TURNED ON PRIOR TO LEAVING THE PARKING LOT WITH ADVANCETRAC FAILURE. LEFT CAR AT MECHANIC. ERROR SOUNDS SIMILAR TO OTHER FORD AND LINCOLN CARS WITH POWER STEERING FAILURE.

THIS VEHICLE HAS EPAS. LAST NIGHT MY WIFE DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE GAS STATION AND PARKED IN FRONT OF A GAS PUMP. SOMEONE ASKED HER TO MOVE FORWARD AND WHEN SHE STARTED THE CAR, SHE RECEIVED THE "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILURE" MESSAGE AND THE POWER STEERING REFUSED TO WORK. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. SHE STARTED THE CAR AND SHUT IT OFF NUMEROUS TIMES UNTIL THE SYSTEM RESET AND SHE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME. THIS CAR BELONGS TO AN 85 YEAR OLD WOMAN AND IF THE POWER STEERING FAILS WHILE SHE IS DRIVING THE CAR SHE WOULD NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO CONTROL THE STEERING.

MY VEHICLE'S POWER STEERING NO LONGER WORKS. THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING WHEN I STARTED THE ENGINE ON 12/4/19. THE DASHBOORD INDICATED "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT". SHORTLY AFTER THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING, THE DASHBOARD ALSO INDICATED "SERVICE ADVANCETRAC". MY VEHICLE HAS 96,000 ODOMETER MILES.

THEN IT WOULD NOT RESET. WE TRIED TO DRIVE IT STOPPING AND STARTING IT TO TRY TO RESET IT. IT SUDDENLY BECAME REALLY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND MY HUSBAND LOST CONTROL AND RAN OVER A CURB ON CITY STREET . LUCKILY NO ONE WAS ON THE CURB OR SIDEWALK .NO INJURIES.
