WANDERING VEHICLE, UNSTABLE STEERING CORRECTION REQUIRED, LOOSE STEERING REQUIRING CONSTANT INPUT FROM DRIVER TO MAINTAIN LANE AND VEHICLE STABILITY. CHRYSLER OPENED A STAR CASE ON 10/10/18 S1819000003 TO TIGHTEN BALL JOINTS AND RELATED COMPONENTS SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO THIS ISSUE FOR ALL JL OWNERS AND SPECIFICALLY CALLED OUT JL ADJUSTMENTS ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE JK WRANGLER. THIS SERVICE WAS PERFORMED ON MY VEHICLE 10/22/18 WITH NO BENEFIT, WAS ALSO INFORMED ALL BOLTS/TORQUE ADJUSTMENTS WERE IN SPEC UPON INSPECTION AND TEST. TECHNICIANS THEN LOOSENED AND TIGHTENED BOLTS PER STAR CASE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE JL. JEEP HAD CHANGED THE PSB SPECIFICATIONS/ADJUSTMENTS MID (MAY) 2018 TO ALLEVIATE JL STEERING LOCK UP ISSUES OWNERS WERE EXPERIENCING AND IT RESULTED IN THE LOOSE STEERING, LANE WANDERING ON VEHICLES MANUFACTURED AFTER THIS DATE/CHANGE. MY JLU RUBICON WAS MANUFACTURED 7/27/18. I'VE BEEN INFORMED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND CHRYSLER ENGINEERING THAT CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND NO RESOLUTION EXISTS. THE CHRYSLER ENGINEER ALSO STATED HE "WOULD RATHER HAVE A VEHICLE WITH LOOSE STEERING THAN ONE THAT LOCKS UP."

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH AND MAKING A RIGHT TURN, THE STEERING WHEEL SUDDENLY MALFUNCTIONED AND CEASED TO TURN MOMENTARILY, WHICH NEARLY CAUSED A CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO YARK JEEP(6019 WEST CENTRAL AVE, TOLEDO, OH) WHERE A STEP-BY-STEP CONFIGURATION OF THE STEERING COLUMN WAS PERFORMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,776.

AT 11,500 MILES MY 2018 JL HAS A LOT OF PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHERE IT FEELS I DRIFT A LOT AND HAVE TO MAKE MULTIPLE CORRECTING TO STAY IN THE CENTER OF THE LANE. ALSO WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND HITTING A BUMP, THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES FOR UP TO 15 SECONDS LONG. IT APPEARS TO BE CALLED THE "DEATH WOBBLE." THIS IS MY WIFE'S VEHICLE AND SHE DOES NOT WANT TO DRIVE IT ANYMORE AS IT IS UNSAFE. THE ISSUE IS EASY TO RECREATE.
Steering, Oct 21, 2018
SINCE THE DAY THAT I DROVE MY 2018 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED RUBICON OFF OF THE LOT, THE STEERING HAS BEEN LOOSE WHERE YOU CAN MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL 1 1/2 INCHES BOTH WAYS AND IT DOES NOTHING. THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS EXCESSIVE DRIFTING AND A SIGNIFICANT DEAD-SPOT IN THE CENTER. I HAVE VISITED THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES FOR THIS ISSUE WITH THE SERVICE ADVISOR AND HE FINALLY SHOWED ME A DOCUMENT THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. I HAVE ONLY 500 MILES ON THE TRUCK BECAUSE WE ARE SCARED TO DRIVE IT AND HURT OURSELVES OR SOMEONE ELSE.
Steering, Oct 20, 2018
THE STEERING IS NOT FIRM.THERE IS A PLAY IN STEERING WHEEL (1 INCH MORE OR LESS) YOU NOTICE THE PROBLEM THE MOST WHEN DRIVING OVER 50MPH.THIS PROBLEM MAKE IT HAD TO STAY STRAIT ON YOUR LANE WHEN DRIVING FAST. THE DEALER SAID THERE IS NO PROBLEM.
Steering, Oct 18, 2018
WHILE TRYING TO MERGE INTO A HIGHWAY THE POWER STEERING TURNED OF AND I WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL LEFT TO MERGE. I HAD TO FORCE IT TO GET INTO THE DRIVING LANE AND THEN THE POWER STEERING STARTED TO WORK AGAIN. THEN ON THE CURVE 1/4 MILE AFTER I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY THE ROAD CURVES TO THE RIGHT AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AGAIN FOR ABOUT 2 TO 3 SECONDS. SPEED WAS ABOUT 50 TO 60 BOTH TIMES.. I TRIED LATER WHEN DRIVING HOME AND WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE.
Steering, Oct 18, 2018
SINCE THE DAY THAT I DROVE MY 2018 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED RUBICON OFF OF THE LOT, THE STEERING HAS BEEN SUB-PAR. THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS EXCESSIVE DRIFTING AND A SIGNIFICANT DEAD-SPOT IN THE CENTER. I HAVE VISITED THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES FOR THIS ISSUE WITH THE SERVICE ADVISOR ONLY TELLING ME "IT IS A JEEP". I HAVE OWNED A TOTAL OF 5 JEEPS WITH ONLY THE 1979 CJ HAVING WORSE STEERING THAN THIS MODEL. AS A TRAINED FIRST RESPONDER, I WOULD BE HESITANT TO RECOMMEND THIS VEHICLE TO ANYONE DUE TO THE SAFETY RISKS POSED BY THE SUB-PAR STEERING.

I HAVE A 2018 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED RUBICON WITH FRAME WELDS THAT EXHIBIT EXCESSIVE POROSITY AND IN SOME CASES, OFF LOCATION. I HAVE VISITED TWO SEPARATE DEALERS A TOTAL OF THREE DIFFERENT TIMES. THE THIRD TIME WAS A CHARM AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR AGREED THAT THE FRAME WELDS WERE NOT "IN SPEC" ACCORDING TO FCA'S STAR BULLETIN S1813000001. I WAS TOLD THAT DIRECTION WOULD HAVE TO BE GIVEN FROM FCA ON WHAT TO DO AND THAT THE ADVISOR DIDN'T KNOW THAT THE WELDS COULD BE PROPERLY REPAIRED. IT HAS NOW BEEN MORE THAN 3 WEEKS SINCE I HAVE HEARD ANYTHING. I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF MY NEW JEEP IS SAFE TO DRIVE AT THIS POINT. IN ADDITION TO THE DEALERSHIPS, I HAVE BEEN CONTACTED JEEP CARES AND MIKE MANLEY'S OFFICE WITH NO RESOLUTION. I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO.
Steering, Oct 18, 2018
AS THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, THERE IS ABNORMAL PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE, BUT IT WAS NOT RESOLVED. THE STEERING WHEEL CAN BE TURNED APPROXIMATELY 3-5 DEGREES BEFORE ANY RESPONSE FROM THE WHEELS AND DRIFTS CONSIDERABLY WHILE DRIVING.
Vehicle speed control, Oct 17, 2018, crash
WHEN TURNING INTO A PARKING SPOT ON AN INCLINE, I HAD SLOWED TO START THE TURN. I THEN LET OFF THE BRAKE A BIT TO BE ABLE TO ROLL INTO THE SPOT. THE CAR THEN ACCELLERATED INTO THE WALL AT THE END OF THE SPOT DAMAGING MY BUMPER, SCRATCHING THE CAR NEXT TO MINE AND ALSO THE WALL I HIT.
Steering, Oct 17, 2018
WHILE DRIVING AT SPEED THE STEERING WOULD NOT TURN RIGHT, ONLY LEFT. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD TO THE LEFT (ACROSS OPPOSING TRAFFIC). ONCE OFF THE ROAD THE SITUATION RESOLVED, I WAS ABLE TO IDLE HOME WHERE I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER.
Steering, Oct 17, 2018
AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AFTER HITTING A SMALL BUMP, VEHICLE BEGINS TO SHAKE SIGNIFICANTLY AND IT ONLY GOES AWAY AFTER SLOWING DOWN CONSIDERABLY. SIMILAR ISSUE TO WHAT OTHERS ARE DESCRIBING AND NEARLY IDENTICAL TO THE JEEP "DEATH WOBBLE" THAT IS FAIRLY WELL DOCUMENTED. STARTED AT ONLY 9000 MILES AFTER ZERO MODIFICATIONS OR OFF-ROAD USE. DEALER REPRODUCED AND INDICATED THAT THE STEERING STABILIZER IS "SHOT" AND REPLACEMENT PART IS BACKORDERED WITH NO ESTIMATED DELIVERY DATE.
Suspension, Oct 17, 2018
IT STARTED WITH THE 'DEATH WOBBLE' DRIVING INTERSTATE SPEED, 65, OVER A BRIDGE AND GO OVERING ONE OF THE BRIDGE SPANS SPACERS.THE "DEATH WOBBLE" IS A VERY DANGEROUS VIBRATION THAT OCCURS IN THE FRONT END OF A VEHICLE. WHEN A VEHICLE EXPERIENCES DEATH WOBBLE, THE ENTIRE STEERING SYSTEM RAPIDLY TURNS BACK AND FORTH, MAKING CONTROLLING THE VEHICLE VERY HARD. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE DEATH WOBBLE ONCE IT STARTS IS TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN UNTIL NORMAL STEERING CONTROL IS RESTORED. AT 65 THE WHOLE JEEP SHOCK AND MY WIFE AND I WERE QUITE SCARED. I PUT HAZARDS ON AND SLOWED TO ABOUT 10 MPH AND THE WOBBLE STOPPED. A FEW DAYS FROM THEN WE TOOK THE NEW 2018 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED WITH 3000 MILES INTO THE JEEP DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLICATE THE DEATH WOBBLE. THEN UPON INVESTIGATION THE DISCOVERED 'ABOUT 10 NUTS AND BOLTS THAT WERE FINGER TIGHT'. EXACT WORDS FROM THE DEALER. THEY COMMENTED THEY WERE GOING TO REPORT THIS ISSUE AS WELL. SO BETWEEN THIS AND THE PENDING RECALL OF THE 'TRACKING BAR BRACKET', I AM SCARED OF AL THE WELDS ON THE VEHICLE AS WELL AS ALL THE BOLTS NOW. *DT CONSUMER STATED EVEN THOUGH THE BOLTS WERE TIGHTENED IT STILL WOBBLES. UPDATED 12/12/18*JB

ON 9-26-18 I PURCHASED A NEW 2018 JEEP WRANGLER RUBICON. A FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME TO DO A DATA SEARCH FOR AN UPCOMING RECALL CONCERNING THE FRONT TRACK BAR BRACKET. I SEE THAT 18V-675 DATED 9-28-18 WAS ISSUED. FCA RECALL #UA5. MINE IS ONE OF THE RECALLED JEEPS. HOWEVER, I PROCEEDED TO INSPECT THE TRACK BAR WELDING AND IDENTIFY WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND CHECK FOR SEPARATED WELDS NO WELDS, ETC. WHILE UNDER THE JEEP I DISCOVERED OTHER ISSUES THAT WILL CAUSE FUTURE SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE. SUCH AS FRAME FAILURE OR OTHER COMPONENTS ATTACHED TO THE FRAME FAILING DUE TO POOR WELDING TECHNIQUES AS WELL AS PREMATURE CORROSION. THESE POTENTIAL FAILURES MAY RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT INJURIES TO THE OCCUPANT(S) OF THE VEHICLE. ON THE FRAME, MANY WELDS APPEAR TO BE INFERIOR, SUCH AS PERFORATED WELDS, MISSING WELDS, WELDS THAT ARE NOT COMPLETE LEAVING GAPS BETWEEN THE EDGES OF THE FRAME. ADDITIONALLY, IN MANY AREAS OF THE FRAME, THE PAINT HAS FLAKED OFF OF THE WELDS AND IS NOW STARTING TO RUST. I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR 3 WEEKS WITH 500 MILES ON IT. IT HAS BEEN STREET DRIVEN ONLY. WITH THE CURRENT RECALL FOR THE TRACK BAR, THE DEALER ADVISED NOT TO TAKE IT OFF ROAD. ON 10-17-18 I EMAILED PICTURES TO THE DEALER AS WELL AS PAID THEM A VISIT. I HAVE SUPPLIED THE DEALER WITH PICTURES AND HAVE AN APPOINTMENT ON 11-6-18 FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED THAT THE DEALER MAY ATTEMPT TO WELD THESE AREAS. AND THAT IF ATTEMPTED, WOULD ONLY BLISTER OFF ANY PAINT ON THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME THAT COULD NOT BE SEEN OR PRIMED AND REPAINTED PROPERLY. AS THIS IS A BOX FRAME AND I BELIEVE IT HAS TO BE DIPPED TO BE PRIMED AND PAINTED ON THE INNER SIDE OF THE FRAME. ANY OTHER METHOD THAT MAY BE UTILIZED WOULD NOT BE THE SAME NOR WOULD IT OFFER THE SAME AMOUNT OF CORROSION PROTECTION AS WHAT THE FACTORY METHODOLOGY UTILIZES.

I PICKED MY NEW VEHICLE UP 18 HOURS AGO WITH 5 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I CAN REPORT UNSAFE HIGHWAY DRIVING UNDER DRY AND CALM DRIVING CONDITIONS. DRIVER IS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE EXCESSIVE STEERING WHEEL INPUT TO OFFSET THE CONTINOUS UNEXPECTED CHANGE IN DIRECTION OF THE VEHICLE.

RECENTLY FCA STARTED A RECALL CAMPAIGN (UA5) TO INSPECT AND REPAIR THE FRONT TRACK BAR BRACKET WELDS BUT AT THE MOMENT IT IS INCOMPLETE WITH NO SOLUTION. THIS IS PRETTY ALARMING TO ME SINCE THIS CAN CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO LOOSE STEERING RESPONSE. NOW I AM AFRAID TO TAKE LONG RIDES ON THE VEHICLE AND I AM SCARE TO LET MY WIFE DRIVE THE VEHICLE. I TALK TO FCA AND THEY SAID IT IS STILL SAFE TO DRIVE, BUT AFTER READING SOME OF THE EXPERIENCE OF WRANGLER OWNERS THAT HAD THEIR TRACK BAR WELDS BROKEN I DON'T THINK IS SAFE. ALSO, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF A REPAIR CAN BE DONE ON THIS KIND OF DEFECTS? AND IF THE WELDS WILL BE LONG LASTING AND NOT HAVE A PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE.

WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, I ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TIGHTNESS FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. DISABLING ME TO TURN LEFT OR RIGHT, TYPICALLY ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE ACCELERATING. IF I WAS TO TURN THE VEHICLE'S STEERING WHEEL FOR A SLIGHT CURVE OR TURN THE VEHICLE WOULD REMAIN STRAIGHT MAKING THE VEHICLE IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE THE APPROPRIATE ADJUSTMENT. VEHICLE WAS PULLED TO SAFETY FOR A RESET ( TURNING OFF THE ENGINE FOR 5 MINS BEFORE RESTARTING). UPON ACCELERATING THE TIGHTNESS OF THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN, EVENTUALLY CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL.
