Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. 4. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  18. Engine and engine coolingDec 3, 2012

This is an update to a recently announced recall. Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines, as well as certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. Coolant system leaks may cause the engines to overheat and leak flammable engine fluids.

If flammable engine fluids come in contact with the vehicle’s hot exhaust system, a vehicle fire could occur.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine for coolant system leaks and reprogram the vehicle’s powertrain control module and instrument cluster with an updated calibration and overheat strategy software. There will be no charge to owners for this service. Owners were recently notified to contact dealers to arrange for alternative transportation as Ford developed a remedy. Owners will be shortly receiving notifications to contact Ford dealers to schedule the free remedy repair. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

  19. Exterior lighting, headlightsNov 30, 2012

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Fusion vehicles, manufactured from February 3, 2012, through October 20, 2012, for failing to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." The affected vehicles may not have had the low beam headlamp projector coating properly cured during its manufacturing process.

An improperly cured projector coating will become hazy through operation, over time, reducing the brightness of the low-beam lamp. This may decrease driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headlamp assembly. The recall began on December 18, 2012. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

  8. Engine, Feb 22, 2016

NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR BUT MOST RECENTLY AND THE MOST CONCERNING IS THE FREQUENT STALLING AT RANDOM TIMES . THE CAR WILL JUST GO DEAD . SOMETIMES A WARNING IN DISPLAY SAYS RUN ACTIVE POWER, SOMETIMES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON . WHEN IT STALLS RANDOMLY IT LOSES POWER AND BUCKS A LITTLE THEN STALLS . WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAY THERE IS A TERRIBLE VIBRATION COMING FROM FRONT OF THE CAR AS THE STALLING PROBLEM GETS WORSE IT ALSO GOES INTO "LIMP MODE" ON HIGHWAY . THE CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED FOR MANY WEIRD PROBLEMS SUCH AS WHEN I WAS IN FLA IN DEC AND THE HEAT CAME ON FULL BLAST AND TEMPERATURE GAUGE SAID IT WAS MINUS 21 DEGREE'S . IT HAD PROBLEM WITH WIPERS , TURN SIGNALS AND HEADLIGHTS NOT WORKING. I CAN'T COUNT HOW MANY MODULES HAVE BEEN REPLACED. I LIVE IN THE MOUNTAINS AND IT IS VERY SCARY TO BE DRIVING AND NOT KNOW WHEN YOUR CAR WILL STALL . THE CAR IS AT DEALER YET AGAIN AND IT WAS VERY UNSETTLING TO DISCOVER THAT THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T THINK IT WAS A BIG DEAL THAT YOUR NEARLY NEW VEHICLE IS STALLING FREQUENTLY . WHICH MADE MY GUT SAY THERE COULD BE SOME SORT OF COVER UP. BECAUSE YOU LITERALLY CAN NOT TRUST ANYONE ANY MORE . I COULD SEE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN THE MAKING. BUT WHILE GOVERNMENT STALLS AND STALLS PEOPLE ARE BEING KILLED IN THESE CARS . I HAVE ON VIDEO MY CAR STALLING . I TOLD MY FAMILY IF I DIE IN A CRASH TODAY CHECK MY PHONE FOR THE VIDEO'S OF CAR STALLING AND SUE THE HELL OUT OF FORD!!! UPDATED 10/19/2017*JS *BF...VIDEO AVAILABLE

THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON THE DASH CAME ON. I TOOK IT INTO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THE WIRING HARNESS UNDER THE SEAT WAS CRUSHED , SUPPOSEDLY BY AN EMPTY JELLY JAR THAT WAS UNDER NEATH THE SEAT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. I HAVE THE JELLY JAR AND ITS NOT EVEN BROKEN . FORD CLAIMS ITS MY FAULT AND TO GET IN TOUCH WITHMY INSURANCE COMPANY WHICH I HAVE BUT SINCE THE LIGHT (AIRBAG ) LIGHT HAS COME ON, MY SEAT DOESN'T WORK DOES NOT MOVE BACK OR FORWARD AND THE LIGHT THAT TELLS IF IF THE SEAT BELT IS FASTENED DOESN'T WORK. I HAVEN'T HEARD BACK FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY BUT IM WONDERING IF MORE FUSION OWNERS THAN JUST ME HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH THE WIRING HARNESS AND IF THE PROBLEM IS DUE TO THE LOCATION OF THE WIRING HARNESS RATHER THAN THE JELLY JAR WHICH IS UNBROKEN. I AM A 72 YEAR OLD WOMAN AND ALTHOUGH IM SLIGHTLY OVERWEIGHT , I CANNOT IMAGINE HOW MY WEIGHT AND THE JELLY JAR COULD DISABLE THE WHOLE CASE. IT DOESN'T LOOK CRUSHED BUT I'M TAKING IT TO MY MECHANIC TOMORROW AND HAVING HIM TAKE THE SEAT OUT AND LOOK AT THE WIRING HARNESS. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY WHEN THE LIGHT CAME ON ABOUT A WEEK AGO.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY FEB 2 2016, THE FORD FUSION HYBRID 2013 MODEL, SUDDENLY LOST ITS ABILITY TO DELIVER POWER AND PROPULSION. LOSS OF POWER TO THE VEHICLE RESULTED IN LOSS OF LIGHT TO THE CONSOLE AND TO THE CAR'S PROPULSION SYSTEM SLOWING IT FROM FREEWAY SPEEDS OF 65 MPH TO WHAT SEEMS LIKE 5 MPH OR LESS, IN THE THE EVENING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC.ALL ATTEMPTS AT APPLYING THE GAS PEDAL HAD FAILED TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE, AS THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE POWER PROPULSION SYSTEM. I WAS ABLE TO CRUISE ON MOMENTUM TO A SOFT SHOULDER. THE CAR WAS TOWED OFF THE BRIDGE AND LATER TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP. NO CAUSE WAS FOUND BY THE FORD TECHNICIANS AND FORD REGIONAL CUSTOMER RELATIONS SAID MY CAUSE COULD NOT BE HELPED IF THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM, THUS I AM STUCK WITH A POTENTIAL CATASTROPHIC FAILURE THAT CAN HAPPEN AT ANYTIME DURING FREEWAY COMMUTE. THIS IS A POTENTIAL DANGER TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND FORD IS UNWILLING TO MITIGATE OR ADDRESS SUCH A SERIOUS LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM.

MY DRIVE IS GRAVEL. IT PROBABLY SURGED A GOOD CAR LENGTH BEFORE THE BRAKES ENGAGED, YET MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKES THE ENTIRE TIME. IT WAS SCARY AS HELL. THE FIRST TIME I THOUGHT I HAD BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND BY ANOTHER CAR. THE DEALER LOOKED AT IT TODAY AND FOUND NO ISSUES. I'M NOT HAPPY WITH THIS WAITING TO HAPPEN AGAIN AS I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT SEQUENCE OF EVENTS CAUSED IT BEFORE. THE FIRST TIME WAS ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF AGO AND THE OTHER TIME WAS ONE WEEK AGO.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESTART AFTER A FEW ATTEMPTS. THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS UNDETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000.

  14. Power train, Jan 29, 2016

THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS VEHICLE HAS A HARSH SHIFT FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEARS. FOR THE MOST PART ALL OTHER SHIFTS ARE SMOOTH. THE JERKY SHIFT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, NOT JUST WHEN THE CAR IS COLD. I'M AFRAID THAT THIS IS CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE INTERIOR OF THE TRANSMISSION AND THAT ONE DAY IT WILL STOP WORKING ALTOGETHER.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD FUSION. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V246000 (STRUCTURE:BODY); HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

  16. Air bags, Jan 26, 2016

I HAD TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALER 4 TIMES FOR REPAIR DUE TO THE AIR BAG LIGHT COMING ON WHILE DRIVING. EACH TIME THEY TOLD ME IT WAS FIXED AND THEN WOULD COME BACK ON WITHIN A FEW WEEKS. THEY ALSO TOLD ME ITS ONLY A LIGHT MALFUNCTION AND THE AIRBAG WOULD DEPLOY SO DON'T WORRY TOO MUCH. THEN I SAW NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V597000 AND SAW THAT IT MAY NOT DEPLOY AND WAS VERY FRUSTRATED. I TOOK IT IN FOR THIS REPAIR IN MARCH 2015, AND AFTER BEING IN THE SHOP FOR OVER 3 WEEKS WITH THIS ISSUE THEY TOLD ME THAT IT SHOULD BE A PERMANENT FIX. WELL IT WAS NOT, AFTER A FEW MONTHS IT WOULD COME BACK ON EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, BUT TURN OFF THE NEXT TIME YOU STARTED THE CAR. AROUND DECEMBER 2015 IT BEGAN TO STAY ON AND I FEEL LIKE I'M GOING AROUND IN A CIRCLE CONSTANTLY TRYING TO REPAIR A CRITICAL SAFETY DEVICE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY FORCE TO THE STEERING WHEEL IN ORDER TO STEER THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT, SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC AND NO HILL ASSIST" MESSAGE WAS DISPLAYED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MULTIPLE DEALERS WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING RACK ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000.

AUGUST 10, 2015 THE LATCH ON MY REAR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR RELEASED WHILE DRIVING AND WOULD NOT RE-LATCH. THIS WAS THE DOOR MY DAUGHTER'S CAR-SEAT WAS LOCATED (SHE WAS NOT IN THE CAR THE TIME). I ONLY OWNED MY VEHICLE FOR A FEW WEEKS PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING. I WAS SOLD THIS FUSION WITH OPEN RECALLS BUT WAS NOT INFORMED OF THIS. I CALLED BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND FORD- NONE OF WHICH WHERE HELPFUL. I WAS TOLD BY ONE DEALER MY CAR WAS FIXED AND IT WASN'T BE ANOTHER. I STILL DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE AND HAVE NO TRUST IN MY LOCAL DEALERS AT THIS POINT. I HAVE ASKED NUMEROUS TIMES TO TRADE MY CAR IN BUT THEY ARE ONLY WILLING TO GIVE ME A FRACTION OF WHAT I PAID, LEAVING ME UPSIDE DOWN AND UNABLE TO AFFORD ANOTHER CAR.

  20. Steering, Electrical system, Engine, Jan 19, 2016

PURCHASED VEHICLE NEW IN FEB 2013. HAS SHUT DOWN 4 TIMES WHILE IN MOTION. 3 WERE IN TOWN AT SLOW SPEEDS FIRST TIME WAS AROUND SUMMERTIME THE FIRST OR SECOND YEAR, BUT THE LAST WAS 12/24/2015 ON THE INTERSTATE RUNNING A STEADY 75 MPH IN THE INSIDE LANE IN VERY HEAVY TRAFFIC. ONLY BY THE GRACE OF GOD WAS I ABLE TO MANEUVER IT TO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT GETTING RUN OVER! EACH TIME THE DASH GOES BLACK AND ENGINE (AND POWER STEERING/BRAKES) SHUTS OF. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS BEFORE OR AFTER THE SHUT DOWN. ONLY THING STILL WORKING WAS THE RADIO. (IT NORMALLY PLAYS UNTIL YOU OPEN THE DOOR ANYWAY) EACH TIME IT STARTED RIGHT UP AFTER STOPPING. HAS BEEN IN FOR REPAIR 3 TIMES. NO FAULT CODES PRESENT AND SERVICE TECH "COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM", SO NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE, OTHER THAN THE NUMEROUS RECALLS THAT HAVE BEEN ISSUED. I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR!!! I HAVE CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER SATISFACTION CENTER AND REGISTERED A COMPLAINT WITH THEM.THEIR RESPONSE WAS TO TAKE IT TO ANOTHER FORD DEALER FOR A SECOND OPINION. THAT IS VERY INCONVENIENT DUE TO THE NEXT DEALER BEING 2 HOURS AWAY AND THEY WOULD NEED TO KEEP THE CAR FOR A DAY OR TWO TO TRY TO "REPLICATE THE PROBLEM". IT IS VERY SPORADIC. IT COULD BE SIX MONTHS BEFORE IT DOES IT AGAIN. A VERY DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER!!!

  21. Air bags, Jan 13, 2016, crash, fire

I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT ON A CITY STREET AND WAS HIT IN THE REAR BY A CAR GOING VERY FAST. I HIT A CAR IN FRONT OF ME AND MY AIR BAG DEPLOYED. A FEW SECONDS LATER MY AIR BAG BURST INTO FLAMES. I USED MY WATER BOTTLE TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. I WAS DAZED AND HURT AND IF I WAS UNCONSCIOUS RESULTS WOULD HAVE BEEN EXTREME.

  22. Steering, Jan 10, 2016

WHILE REVERSING THE 2013 FUSION OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THERE WAS A WARNING DISPLAY ON THE SCREEN "STEERING WHEEL FAULT, SERVICE REQUIRED". I HAVE NEVER SEEN THAT WARNING BEFORE IN THE THREE YEARS OF OWNING THE CAR. I PROCEEDED TO BACK OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY BUT WHEN I STARTED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO EXIT, I COULD NOT DO IT AS THE STEERING WAS VERY STIFF. I TRIED TO PULL IT BUT IT WOULDN'T MOVE. THE CAR WAS STILL ON AT THIS POINT AND THE ONLY THING I COULD DO WAS TO EITHER REVERSE THE CAR OR PUT INTO D AND DRIVE IT FORWARD TO PARK IT AGAIN, WHICH IS WHAT I DID. THAT WAS CERTAINLY A SCARY EXPERIENCE - NOT HAVING CONTROL OF THE STEERING - BUT FORTUNATELY IT HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR WAS NOT IN MOTION AND NOT ON PUBLIC ROADS. WHAT CONCERNS ME IS WHAT IF SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING AROUND THE CITY OR, WORSE YET, THE FREEWAY. I HOPE THIS IS ADDRESSED AND A RECALL IS ISSUED SO WHATEVER THE PROBLEM IS FIXED.

  23. Visibility/wiper, Jan 8, 2016

I TOOK MY 2013 FORD FUSION (THEN STILL UNDER WARRANTY) TO THE DEALER IN SEPTEMBER 2014 BECAUSE MY WIPERS WERE SOMETIMES BOUNCING/ VIBRATING (AT TIMES VIOLENTLY) WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING, AND WOULD HESITATE INTERMITTENTLY AS THEY MOVED ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD. THEY CLAIMED THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND DISMISSED IT. THEY CLAIMED THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS. I VIDEOTAPED THE PROBLEM SHORTLY AFTER I PICKED-UP THE CAR AND SHARED THE YOUTUBE LINK WITH THE DEALER. VIDEO LINK: HTTPS://YOUTU.BE/EJR8DM_FZ2C I LIVED WITH IT UNTIL A YEAR LATER (NOVEMBER, 2015) WHEN THE WIPERS CEASED WORKING IN HEAVY RAIN AT SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY. I LOST VISIBILITY IMMEDIATELY. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO GET OFF THE ROAD. WHEN THE RAIN SLOWED, I MADE MY WAY TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND REMINDED THEM OF THE PROBLEM A YEAR EARLIER. THEY DIAGNOSED A WIPER MOTOR FAILURE AND--IN SPITE OF MY EARLIER VISIT UNDER WARRANTY WITH THE WIPER PROBLEM--DECLINED TO FIX IT UNLESS I PAID FOR THE REPAIR AS THE CAR WAS NOW NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I COULD NOT DRIVE THE CAR WITHOUT THE REPAIR, THUS I WAS AT THE MERCY OF THE DEALER FOR A $533 BILL, WHICH I PAID. I BELIEVE THE FAILURE OF THE WIPERS ON THE HIGHWAY WAS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN THAT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED HAD THE DEALER SERVICED THE VEHICLE WHEN I BROUGHT THE PROBLEM TO THEIR ATTENTION IN 2014. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT FAILURE DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I CAN ONLY ASSUME THE DEALER FAILED TO MAKE THE REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE OF THE COST. THE FAILURE OF THE WIPER MOTORS WAS GRADUAL AND PROVIDED AMPLE WARNING FOR THE DEALER, BUT THEY FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT IN A TIMELY WAY. IN THE FUTURE, PROBLEMS SUCH AS THE VIBRATION AND HESITATION THAT TELEGRAPH POTENTIAL WIPER FAILURE SHOULD BE DEALT WITH IMMEDIATELY WHEN BROUGHT TO A DEALER'S ATTENTION.

IN THE TRUNK OF THE CAR, THE SHEET METAL THAT IS ON THE TOP OF THE TRUNK, IT HAS VERY SHARP EDGES.. WHILE LOADING TRUNK, MY HAND/FINGER WAS CUT ON THE SHARP EDGE. CONTACT LOCAL FORD DEALER, THE BODY SHOP THERE AGREED THAT IT WAS SHARP AND IT WAS PROBABLY A MANUFACTURER ISSUE, BUT THEY SAID THAT FORD WOULD HAVE TO MAKE A PIECE OF PLASTIC TO PUT IN THE RAZOR SHARP HOLES. I DID SEND IN A COMPLAINT TO FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM THEM.

  25. Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Jan 8, 2016

I HAVE BEEN HAVING ISSUES WITH THE CAR DYING WHILE ACCELERATING FROM STOPS. TOOK TO LOCAL FORD DEALER, NOTHING WRONG. TOOK TO LOCAL MECHANIC AFTER IT DIED ON ME AND THEY SAID SOFTWARE PROGRAMMING FOR THROTTLE BODY. THE VEHICLE HAS DIED APPROXIMATELY 6 TIMES WHILE AT STOP SIGNS AND STOP LIGHTS, WHEN YOU GO TO TAKE OFF, IT ACTS LIKE IT ISN'T GETTING GAS. I HAVE CALLED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER AND FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT SAY THERE IS NO PROGRAM UPDATES FOR THROTTLE BOTTLE. KEVIN AT FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE WENT ON TO TELL ME THAT WHAT I FOUND ONLINE WITH THROTTLE BODY ISSUES WAS NOT TRUE, UNLESS I FOUND IT ON FORD.COM. THIS ALL STARTED ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18TH.
