Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

The rearview camera may display a distorted, intermittent, or blank image when the vehicle is in reverse.

A rearview camera that fails to properly display an image can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and replace the rearview camera as necessary, free of charge. This will be a phased campaign, with the remedy becoming available in different phases based on model and model years. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on October 25, 2025. Additional letters will be mailed once the final remedy is available on each phase. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015 Fiesta, 2016 Fusion, and 2016 Lincoln MKZ vehicles sold, or ever registered in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles. The front brake hoses may rupture and leak brake fluid.

A brake fluid leak will increase brake pedal travel and extend the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the front brake hoses, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 27, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S12.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Fiesta, 2014-2016 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles sold, or ever registered in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and Ford or Lincoln dealers will replace the side door latches, free of charge. The recall began September 21, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S15.

Road salt or other contaminants may corrode the electric power steering gear motor attachment bolts.

If the bolts corrode, the steering gear motor may detach from the gear housing resulting in a loss of power steering assist, requiring a greater steering effort, especially at lower speeds, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gear motor bolts and apply a wax sealer. If any of the steering gear motor attachment bolts are broken or missing, a new steering gear will be installed in the vehicle. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will apply a protective coating to the seat belt cable, free of charge. The recall began May 16, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S42.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2016 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured from March 10, 2016, through March 16, 2016. The front driver seat track assembly's rear riser may have been improperly welded to the seat track rail, and as a result, the driver may not be adequately restrained in a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 207, "Seating Systems" and 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."

An improperly welded driver seat riser may fail to adequately restrain the driver during crash, increasing the risk of injury.

  2. Electronic stability control (ESC), Aug 13, 2018

MY CAR WAS PURCHASED MAY OF 2017. AUGUST 13, 2018 I GOT READY TO PARK MY CAR, AS I PUT MY CAR IN PARK THE CAR WAS STILL MOVING FORWARD AS IT WAS IN DRIVE. CONFUSED I LOOKED DOWN AT THE HANDLE AND IT WAS LITERALLY IN PARK POSITION, BUT AS I LOOKED AT THE DASHBOARD IT STATED IT WAS IN DRIVE. I COULD NOT GET THE HANDLE TO POSITION BACK IN ANY OTHER POSITION EXCEPT FOR PARK. AND AT THIS POINT THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN ON AT ALL. I CONTACTED AAA THEY INFORMED THERE WAS A RECALL ON ALL 2013-16 MODEL YEAR FORD FUSION TO REPLACE SHIFTER CABLE BUSHINGS. HE TOOK THE MIDDLE CONSOLE APART AND SHOWED ME A PINK STRIP AND EXPLAINED THIS IS WHERE THE SHIFTER CABLE DISCONNECTED FROM THE TRANSMISSION. HE SAID THE RECALL WAS RECENT AND TO CONTACT MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY ARE TO REPLACE IT AT NO CHARGE. I TOWED MY CAR TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AFTER EXPLAINING IN DETAIL WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR. THEY RAN MY VIN AND TOLD ME TO BRING IT IN AS IT QUALIFIED FOR THE REPAIR. MY CAR IS INDEED A 2016 FORD FUSION NOT EVEN A YEAR OLD AND THE BUSHING DISCONNECTED FROM MY TRANSMISSION. EVERYTHING WAS FINE, UNTIL A TECHNICIAN CALLED AND AT FIRST INFORMED ME THEY WERE BACK UP AND HAD ABOUT 15 RECALLS BEFORE ME. HE SAID HE HAD TO REPLACE THE WHOLE SHIFTER BUSHING AND IT WAS GOING TO BE OVER A WEEK. AFTER I TOLD HIM FINE I WILL WAIT.. HE THEN CHANGES HIS STORY AND SAYS MY CAR IS NOT QUALIFIED TO BE REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL AND THAT I WAS "MISINFORMED" BY THEIR REPRESENTATIVE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS. HOW IS MY CAR BEING THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL OF THE RECALL, AND HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AS THE RECALL NOT CONSIDERED QUALIFIED ALL OF A SUDDEN BECAUSE YOUR TOO BACKED UP? MY CHILDREN WAS IN THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I PUT MY CAR IN PARK AND IT KEPT ROLLING, IF I HAD NOT THOUGHT QUICKLY MY CAR WOULD HAVE RAN INTO THE WALL IN PARK.

DOES ANYTHING ACTUALLY HAPPEN WHEN SOMEONE FILES A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA? I SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT FOR A RECALL REPAIR REMBURSMENT AND WAS SUPPOSED TO GET A CONFIRMATION EMAIL BUT NEVER DID. MY PROBLEM IS MY 2016 FORD FUSION HAS 2 RECALLS ON IT....I ONLY FOUND OUT ABOUT THEM WHEN MINE BROKE AND I CALLED THE FORD CORPORATE OFFICE THAT'S WHEN THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE MY CAR TO A FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY WOULD REPAIR BOTH RECALLS FREE OF CHARGE PARTS AND LABOR...SO THAT'S WHAT I DID, HOWEVER WHEN I WENT TO PICK UP MY CAR THEY WOULD NOT RELEASE IT WITHOUT MAKING ME PAY $570.69 OR THEY WOULD HOLD MY CAR HOSTAGE AND PUT IN MY FILE THAT I REFUSED THE REPAIR AND WOULD BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY RECALLS ON THE CAR GOING FORWARD. I CALLED THE CORPORATE OFFICE AGAIN AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD ESCALATE THE ISSUE TO LITHIA AND WOULD TAKE 6 TO 8 WEEKS TO GET MY MONEY BACK. I JUST SPOKE TO LITHIA AND THEY SAID FORD DENIED THAT IT WAS EVEN A RECALL...WHICH IT IS, THE RECALL NUMBER IS 18S20 WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT BROKE....SO I WONT EVER GET MY MONEY BACK FOR A PROBLEM I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH CREATING. SO NOW HERE I AM... FORD WONT PAY ME BACK AND NEITHER WILL LITHIA FORD FRESNO CA 93710 SO WHAT IS A CONSUMER OF A POS CAR SUPPOSED TO DO?!

THERE ARE 2 RECALLS ON MY CAR THE MILEAGE IS 59000 AND THE SHIFTER CABLE IS THE PROBLEM RIGHT NOW THERE IS ALSO A RECALL ON THE STEERING WHEEL. APPARENTLY THE WHOLE [XXX] THING CAN FALL OFF WHILE DRIVING....THE ONLY WAY I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE SHIFTER CABLE IS BECAUSE MINE BROKE...NO NOTICE WAS SENT OUT AND THE REASON FOR IT AND THAT IS BECAUSE THEY HAVENT CREATED A STUPID BUSHING THAT WONT BREAK, THE SHIFTER IS IN PARK BUT THE TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL....I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED HOME. THEN THE FORD CORPORATE OFFICE TOLD ME OF THE RECALL...THEY ALSO SAID THERE IS NO PART ISSUED YET EVEN THO ALL 2013 TO 2017 MODELS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. FORD TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO PAY NOTHING BECAUSE IT'S A RECALL. I TOOK MY CAR TO LITHIA FORD IN FRESNO CA BECAUSE CORPORATE INSTRUCTED ME TO TAKE IT THERE AND THAT WAS WHEN THEY TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $580 OUT OF POCKET AND WILL GET REIMBURSED WHEN FORD ISSUES THE RIGHT PART...ITS BEEN OVER 4 YEARS AND THEY STILL HAVENT ISSUED THE RIGHT PART SO HOW LONG WILL IT BE TILL I GET MY MONEY BACK?!?! IF I GET MY MONEY BACK, FOR A PROBLEM THAT IS NOWHERE NEAR MY FAULT, LITHIA CAN FIX IT NOW BUT WITH THE SAME PART THAT JUST BROKE. THEY ALSO SAID IF I DONT PAY THE $580 THEY WOULD PUT IN MY FILE THAT I REFUSED THE REPAIR FOR THE RECALL AND BE COMPLETELY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL CHARGES REGARDING THE RECALLS...EVEN THO I ALREADY AM. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A CONSUMER HAVING TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR A FAULTY PART PUT IN A NEW CAR! THIS CANT BE LEGAL. THE CAR WILL STALL WHEN COMING TO A STOP AND ONLY AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN COMING TO A STOP. NEVER WHILE DRIVING THE FUEL FILLER FLAPPER WILL VIBRATE MAKING A WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A GROWL. TRY TO RESTART IT WILL RUN FRUFF AND DIE. AFTER YOU WAIT ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES IT WILL RESTART AND RUN FINE FOR HUNDREDS OF MILES AND WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT WILL DO THE SAME THING AGAIN,. IT HAS BEEN DOING THIS SAME THING NOW FOR AT ;EAST 6 TO 8 THOUSAND MILES. IT WILL NOT DO IT FOR THE FORD DEALER.

I SENT THIS TO FORD COMPANY: DEAR [XXX], I WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS ABOUT MY 2016 FORD FUSION PROBLEM THAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY, JULY 4, 2018. I WAS DRIVING FROM MY GROCERY SHOPPING WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE ANYMORE AND IT WAS SLIDING BACKWARD. NOT SURE IF SLIDING BACKWARDS WAS DUE TO SLIGHTLY UPHILL OR ANOTHER PROBLEM ON TOP OF CAR WOULDN?T DRIVE ANYMORE. ON MY DASHBOARD A WRENCH DRAWING APPEARED WITH A MESSAGE ?REFER TO YOUR MANUAL?. THIS HAPPENED AT THE INTERSECTION OF REDWOOD PKWY AND OAKWOOD IN VALLEJO CA. THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS. I PUT THE CAR ON PARK ?P? TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND SET THE E-BREAK WITH MY LIGHTS HAZARD ON. I HAD TO CALL 911 TO AVOID ACCIDENT. THEY SENT A POLICE PATROL TO ESCORT ME WHILE MY CAR IS BLOCKING THE TRAFFIC. YOU SEE MY CAR WAS BOUGHT BRAND NEW AND ONLY HAVE LESS THAN 5K MILEAGE. THIS KIND OF PROBLEM SHOULD NOT HAPPENED. I GOOGLED 2016 FUSION TO SEE COMMON PROBLEMS AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM. YOUR COMPANY MUST BE AWARE OF THIS, YET, IT CONTINUE TO HAPPEN. I HOPE FORD IS NOT WAITING FOR SOMEBODY TO PERISH BEFORE TAKING ACTIONS, I HAD MY CAR BROUGHT TO FORD LINCOLN FAIRFIELD CA. I AM A SINGLE EARNER AND STARTING TODAY I HAVE TO TAKE UBER TO GET TO PARK AND RIDE SINCE THIS IS THE ONLY CAR I HAVE. I WANT ACTION FROM YOUR COMPANY PERTAINING TO THIS KIND OF PROBLEM.
